Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher, optimization for complex energy and sustainability processes
Are you looking for a future industrial research position or a long-term academic career? Do you want to be part of building up research – preferably together with industrial partners? Do you like supervising students and participating in teaching? If you are a creative and analytical person and have a PhD in a field related to mathematical modeling and experience in optimizing industrial processes, this might be something for you!
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher (“PostDoc”) to support the group and complement our research portfolio in the field of optimization. The work comprises combining theory and practice by investigating efficient ways to model and solve demanding industrial problems related to energy and sustainability. The decision levels mainly focus on planning and scheduling of production and associated supply chains, but an understanding of dynamic process models and life-cycle aspects is a big asset. In this work, you also need programming skills (e.g. Python, Julia) to merge concepts of chemical engineering, operations research and computer science, as you may also need to deploy machine learning to support data analytics and complex decision-making processes. Knowledge of modern SW-tools in the area of energy and sustainability is highly beneficial.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researchers in Quantum Nanomechanics
This project aims to address one of the great unresolved challenges in physics: While quantum mechanics successfully describes low-energy phenomena, it is incompatible with general relativity which governs gravity and huge energies. The interface between these two has remained experimentally elusive, because only the most violent events in the universe have been considered to produce measurable effects due to the plausible quantum behavior of gravity. We aim at detecting gravitational forces for the first time within a quantum system. We use mechanical oscillators loaded by milligram masses and bring two such gravitationally interacting oscillators into nonclassical motional states. The initial phase of the project focuses on measuring the gravitational force between milligram-scale gold particles, representing a new mass scale showing gravitational forces within a system. This work is part of the ERC Advanced Grant project “GUANTUM: Probing the limits of quantum mechanics and gravity with micromechanical oscillators”.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral or Doctoral Researcher in statistical signal processing
The Structured and Stochastic Modeling Group, headed by Prof. Filip Elvander, conducts research in statistical signal processing, ranging from investigating fundamental properties of the mathematical descriptions of signals, to applied research in array signal processing. We are now looking for an outstanding Doctoral Researcher or Postdoctoral Researcher to join the group.
The research project is concerned with the challenging problem of modeling the complex modern radio environment, where a diverse set of devices and agents share the available spectrum. In this environment, it is crucial to understand the spatio-temporal radio characteristics, i.e. what, when, and from where signals are transmitted. Applications of the envisioned research results include cognitive and adaptive spectrum use as well as localization of targets or signal sources in passive-sensing settings. This is central to future 6G wireless communications applications, where radio-frequency sensing and data transfer (ISAC) are integrated into the same devices.
The research project is part of a larger consortium, gathering world-class researchers in remote sensing with expertise ranging from estimation and optimization theory to hardware design. The specific topic of the project falls in the intersection of statistical signal processing and applied mathematics and is in particular concerned with optimal transport for inverse problems.

About Aalto University, Finland –Official Website
Aalto University is a university located in Espoo, Finland. It was established in 2010 as a merger of three major Finnish universities: the Helsinki University of Technology (established 1849), the Helsinki School of Economics (established 1904), and the University of Art and Design Helsinki (established 1871). The close collaboration between the scientific, business and arts communities is intended to foster multi-disciplinary education and research. The Finnish government, in 2010, set out to create a university that fosters innovation, merging the three institutions into one.
The university is composed of six schools with close to 17,500 students and 4,000 staff members, making it Finland’s second largest university. The main campus of Aalto University is located in Otaniemi, Espoo. Aalto University Executive Education operates in the district of Töölö, Helsinki. In addition to the Greater Helsinki area, the university also operates its Bachelor’s Programme in International Business in Mikkeli and the Metsähovi Radio Observatory in Kirkkonummi.
Aalto University’s operations showcase Finland’s experiment in higher education. The Aalto Design Factory, Aalto Ventures Program and Aalto Entrepreneurship Society (Aaltoes), among others, drive the university’s mission for a radical shift towards multidisciplinary learning and have contributed substantially to the emergence of Helsinki as a hotbed for startups.Aaltoes is Europe’s largest and most active student run entrepreneurship community that has founded major concepts such as the Startup Sauna accelerator program and the Slush startup event.
The university is named in honour of Alvar Aalto, a prominent Finnish architect, designer and alumnus of the former Helsinki University of Technology, who was also instrumental in designing a large part of the university’s main campus in Otaniemi.
