(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Research Associate in Numerical Modelling for AI-Driven Sorbent-Based Carbon Capture Technologies

We are looking for a creative and highly motivated researcher willing to work as part of our international and multidisciplinary team and with expertise to support our research activities in the engineering of optimal porous materials for CO2 capture applications via a data-driven and system-based approach (AI4Capture). This position is an exciting opportunity to contribute to our efforts on designing novel materials that are tailored for the most economical carbon capture process. The project will involve the design of adsorption-based processes that can be used for screening of materials and their integration into our techno-economic PrISMa platform (Charalambous, C., Moubarak, E., Schilling, J. et al. A holistic platform for accelerating sorbent-based carbon capture. Nature 632, 89–94 (2024), with the ultimate aim of identifying top performing materials for specific carbon capture applications.  

The primary objectives of the research are: 1) to develop process models and cycle designs that can be integrated into our screening techno-economic platform; 2) to identify the optimal targets for materials development for selected combinations of CO2 sources and sinks obtained after the process system analysis; and 3) to help developing data-driven approaches for speeding up the screening of materials and the evaluation of the performance of carbon capture processes. 

The successful applicant must hold a PhD (or about to obtain) in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics or related discipline (e.g.  mathematics or other engineering) with background and demonstrable expertise in numerical modelling. The post is available from 1st March 2026 for 12 months in the first instance and could be extended further.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Modelling of Subcontinuum Heat Transfer

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in heat transfer modelling at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. The position is available from 1 May 2026 for a two-year, full-time contract. 

Advanced chip designs are lowering the energy consumption of microelectronic components, devices, and systems, while increasing performance such as speed, capacity, reliability and security. However, the drive for more powerful, more compact chips makes energy consumption and heat dissipation the most urgent challenges underpinning development of mobile devices, large data centres and smart edge devices in applications spanning artificial intelligence, communications, computing and sensing. Addressing it however is very complex task. Bridging the full range of spatial scales from microelectronics manufacturing to the operation of an electronic system raises fundamental and technical questions because it requires combining classical and quantum physics scales and principles. Electronic devices are manufactured by integrating millions of single units. As they have become smaller, the size of single devices has become comparable to the mean free path of electrons and phonons (molecular vibrations transporting heat through the solid). At this limit, the inherent continuity assumption in Fourier’s law breaks down, and a quantum formulation of heat (as the transport and scattering of phonons within solid materials and solid-solid interfaces) become necessary to understand how collections of nanodevices such as transistors in a chip behave as a source or sinks of heat. Understanding (subcontinuum) thermal transport at the nanoscale is a fundamental research topic to address heat removal, reduce hot spots and optimise the consumption of electronic components and circuits.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Wearable Sensors

To make a leading contribution to PD-WATCH, a project funded through the Tay Health Tech Grand Challenge, focused on the development and clinical validation of a miniaturised, flexible wearable patch for continuous tremor monitoring in Parkinson’s disease. Working with Dr Anne Bernassau and Prof Marc Desmulliez, the PDRA will support hardware optimisation, data acquisition, machine-learning pipelines for tremor classification, and clinical validation in collaboration with NHS Lothian. 

The successful candidate will contribute to experimental design, data analysis, the preparation of publications, and support management of this interdisciplinary project. For appointment at Grade 7, significant experience in the areas listed below is required. The PD-WATCH project aims to develop wearable-based tremor assessment tools that can capture tremor severity, tremor subtype, and medication response in real-world settings, supporting future integration into NHS remote monitoring pathways.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: TomoGrav Postdoctoral Research Associate Call I: From Black Hole Tomography to Magnetic Resonance Imaging

The Biomedical and Astronomical Signal Processing (BASP) laboratory at Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh is recruiting a large multi-disciplinary team of postdoctoral researchers for the development of advanced computational imaging techniques and their cutting-edge applications in radio astronomy, space geodesy, and medical imaging. The start date is October 1 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. 

BASP’s ethos  is to develop cutting-edge research on all aspects of computational imaging, from theory and algorithms, to applications in astronomy and medicine. 

Multiple positions are open in the context of the £4M research Fellowship TomoGrav awarded by the Royal Society to Dr Kazunori Akiyama (moving from MIT in March 2026 as an Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt) in partnership with Professor Yves Wiaux (head of BASP). 

TomoGrav ambitions leveraging cutting-edge AI to develop a computational imaging algorithm capable of an unprecedented regime of joint precision, robustness, efficiency, and scalability for image formation. The core application is dynamic black hole tomography with radio-interferometric telescope arrays such as the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) and its proposed space-based Black Hole Explorer (BHEX) extension. The algorithm will be transferred to extreme-scale radio-interferometric imaging applications with SKA, to space-geodetic imaging for Earth reference frame determination, and fast dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in medicine. 

TomoGrav is supported by 10 world-renowned partners from across the world, whose combined expertise is second to none: Prof. Markoff (University of Cambridge), Dr Younsi (University College London), Prof. De Laurentis (University of Naples Federico II), and Dr Johnson (Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian) bring unique expertise in black hole science; Prof. Pesquet (Université Paris-Saclay), Prof. Schönlieb (University of Cambridge), and Prof. Steidl (Technische Universität Berlin) are leading experts at the interface of machine learning and imaging science; Dr Breen (SKA Observatory), Dr Elosegui (MIT Haystack Observatory), and Dr van Heeswijk (Lausanne University Hospital) will support TomoGrav’s planned technology transfers to, respectively, SKA, space geodesy, and MRI. The partners will actively participate to the research and host the postdoctoral researchers for secondments.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Mechatronics Design

We are looking for a highly experienced and skilled PDRA who will work on the EU project AEROSUB “Automated Inspection Robots For Surface, Aerial And Underwater Substructures“. The PDRA is expected to have experience in the following topics: 

  • Mechatronics design and development, 
  • 3D CAD tools, 
  • Motors, motor drivers, 
  • Manufacturing and assembly of systems with unconventional mechanical parts, 
  • Implementation of mechanical design, motor control, and electronics for robotic end-effectors, 
  • Robotic manipulation, 
  • Visual-servoing,
  • Tele-operation 

The accepted candidate will work towards developing one or more robotic end effectors for cleaning of surfaces of underwater assets. The end-effector will be a part of a wholistic underwater mobile-manipulator system, composed of an underwater vehicle, an underwater robotic arm, and the control system. The main application will be cleaning biological fouling on underwater assets i) by rubbing and ii) by using water jets. Mechatronic design, development and integration of end-effectors will be studied in this position. 

This is an exciting project that addresses one of the most challenging extreme environment applications of robotic systems, namely underwater, and brings together in its consortium the top-level expertise in Europe from different disciplines (robotics, machine vision, AI, control, human-robot interaction, energy). It will provide a welcoming and collaborative environment to excel the young researchers in various and connected domains within a team of EU-wide experts. The underwater manipulation team at Heriot-Watt is a part of the new and exceptional multi-million pounds National Robotarium facility (https://www.hw.ac.uk/uk/research/the-national-robotarium.htm) bringing together academic research and industry in Heriot-Watt University campus and housing extremely impactful industry-oriented research. 

Candidates will have a strong interest and background in the above-cited topics with a PhD degree (having submitted their thesis), or equivalent experience. Strong competencies in design and development, robotics, mechatronics, and control are desirable.

Heriot-Watt University (Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Heriot-Watt) is a public research university based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was established in 1821 as the School of Arts of Edinburgh, the world’s first mechanics’ institute, and subsequently granted university status by royal charter in 1966. It is the eighth oldest higher education institute in UK. The name Heriot-Watt was taken from Scottish inventor James Watt and Scottish philanthropist and goldsmith George Heriot.

Known for its focus on science and engineering, it is one of the 39 old universities in the UK comprising the second cluster of elite universities after Oxbridge.

Heriot-Watt was established as the School of Arts of Edinburgh by Scottish businessman Leonard Horner on 16 October 1821. Having been inspired by Anderson’s College in Glasgow, Horner established the School to provide practical knowledge of science and technology to Edinburgh’s working men. The institution was initially of modest size, giving lectures two nights a week in rented rooms and boasting a small library of around 500 technical works. It was also oversubscribed, with admissions soon closing despite the cost of 15 shillings for a year’s access to lectures and the library.

The School was managed by a board of eighteen directors and primarily funded by sponsors from the middle and upper classes including Robert Stevenson and Walter Scott. It first became associated with the inventor and engineer James Watt in 1824, as a means of raising funds to secure permanent accommodation.
