(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoc in Modeling Large Scale Effects of Electrification of Powertrains in Road-based Freight

The pace of the transition to a fossil-free transport sector will depend on many factors, such as the vehicle and infrastructure design, how it influences the haulage companies’ economy, and how the haulage company is affected by policies and legislation. Understanding and quantifying these connections and interactions will help policymakers and vehicle manufacturers make well-informed decisions toward a fossil-free transport system. This project will take a vehicle-focused approach to the study of electrification of the transport system. The aim is to develop mathematically sound tools capable of connecting vehicle characteristics to a national CO2 emission impact and to quantify these using statistical relations.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoc position in AI and Machine Learning for Electromobility

The project focuses on the energy-efficient coordination of electric vehicle (EV) fleets for resilient transport systems during emergency evacuations. Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of natural disasters, including floods, wildfires, and extreme weather events, making efficient large-scale evacuation planning increasingly important. At the same time, the transport sector is undergoing a rapid transition toward electrification. While EVs are central to achieving climate-neutral mobility, most existing evacuation planning methods still assume conventional fuel vehicles and do not account for EV-specific challenges, such as limited battery capacity, variable energy consumption, charging infrastructure availability, recharging requirements, and interactions with the electricity grid. This multifaceted gap presents a significant challenge for designing evacuation strategies that remain effective in future electrified transport systems. The project aims to develop novel AI methods for coordinating fleets of EVs during large-scale emergency evacuations under energy and infrastructure constraints. To address this challenge, the research will leverage reinforcement learning, deep learning, and generative AI, and evaluate against the research front in mathematical optimization strategies, to enable efficient, robust, and adaptive evacuation planning.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in simulation model development for climate-neutral waterborne transport on coastal and inland waterways

The rapid growth of freight transport challenges both infrastructure and the environment. Electrified waterborne transport offers a highly energy-efficient and climate-neutral alternative to road freight, particularly for coastal and inland waterways. This project focuses on advancing electromobility in shipping by integrating high-fidelity vessel operation simulations with energy system analysis to optimize performance, energy use, and infrastructure deployment.

Building on the VPF-IWV voyage planning framework and the ChaSE platform developed in previous projects at the Division of Marine Technology, the project will adapt electric propulsion and energy system modules for inland and coastal operations, including shallow, confined waterways and Swedish winter conditions. Route-specific simulations will quantify energy demand, assess battery performance, and evaluate operational reliability under environmental disturbances such as currents, waves, and ice.

The project will also perform life-cycle techno-environmental-economic assessment of alternative vessel concepts, comparing high-capacity ships and small-vessel platooning, while optimizing charging infrastructure location, power allocation, and utilization. By combining route-specific operational data, renewable energy integration, and electromobility assessment, the project will support the Swedish and the European shift from road to waterborne transport. The results will provide actionable guidance for industry adoption, policy development, and the deployment of resilient, low-emission, and electrified inland and coastal shipping systems.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Modeling of Human-like Balance and Step Recovery

Free-standing passengers on public transport – buses, trams, and urban vehicles – face real injury risks from unexpected disturbances caused by road conditions and driver maneuvers, particularly for passengers with limited muscle strength such as the elderly. Yet robust simulation tools for evaluating these risks across diverse demographics remain lacking.

This project proposes to bridge this gap by transferring state-of-the-art methods from humanoid robotics – reinforcement learning, whole-body model predictive control (MPC), and differentiable optimal control – to simulate human balance and step recovery in urban transport scenarios. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in mathematics, with focus on educational science

Project: Practice-based school research in mathematics education

Since 2017, Chalmers has been a part of the national initiative on practice-based school research within the framework of ULF (Education, Learning & Research, ulfavtal.se). The purpose of the initiative is to strengthen the long-term development of the Swedish school system and the teacher and preschool teacher education programs through deepened collaboration around practice-based research. Researchers in mathematics education at the Department of Mathematical Sciences have participated in several research projects that, among other things, have investigated the effects of test-based learning, the use of vertical surfaces, and student-generated clues for solving problems. The projects have been initiated and implemented in close collaboration with teachers at the training schools affiliated with Chalmers’ teacher education program, Learning and Leadership.

The overarching goal of the project is to further deepen the collaboration around practice-based school research together with our training schools. To make this possible, a postdoctoral position is planned with the assignment to, in close dialogue with principals and teachers, identify challenges within mathematics teaching, formulate research questions based on these, and carry out the research projects together with the school’s teachers. The ambition is to collaborate with several schools in the Gothenburg area and to conduct the research at multiple schools. The projects will not have any predetermined thematic focus; rather, they will be developed in dialogue between teachers and researchers based on the needs and interests of the schools.

(22) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Coupled transport-energy modeling with focus on transport systems

The rapid growth of electric vehicles (EVs) is transforming road transport but also creates new challenges for both transport and energy systems. Large-scale EV charging can overload local power grids. Electric transport systems also depend heavily on electricity supply, meaning power outages or extreme weather events can directly disrupt mobility. In addition, charging infrastructure remains insufficient and often poorly planned. This project aims to develop a coordinated and scalable approach that couples transport and energy system modeling and decision-making with focus on transport system solutions. It will create a high-resolution simulation environment capturing dynamics and interactions among EV users, charging infrastructure, mobility demand, and power grid operations. On top of this environment, a deep-learning-based learning will be developed to enable decentralized and coordinated decisions on EV user charging decisions, infrastructure deployment, and energy system operation. Using the approaches, the project will analyze how synergistic charging of passenger vehicles and heavy-duty electric vehicles, combined with distributed renewable energy and battery storage, can improve system efficiency and resilience.
