PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Personalized and Automated Transportation

Emerging transport technologies such as automated vehicles (AVs) may hold out great benefits to the urban environment and various travelers, yet AV’s impact on specific groups with unique characteristics has hardly been explored in the literature, not to mention the lack of empirical evidence. The main objective of the proposed study is to fill this gap by exploring the mobility behavior, preferences, and needs of unique groups and to develop optimal automated mobility solutions for them using state-of-the-art simulation tools that closely mimic reality. To achieve such goals, we will analyze unique datasets of individual mobility preferences, design and optimize smart mobility solutions such as automated mobility on demand at the operational level, particularly fleet size with multi-class vehicles, along with an operation system including dispatching, scheduling, and pricing strategies designed specifically for the needs of the studied groups; and compare the AV solutions under different scenarios in a large-scale city and evaluate the expected impact on groups’ mobility and consequently on their quality of life.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Land Use Planning

The PhD project will investigate how the online public participation GIS (PPGIS) methodology can be utilized to analyze how citizen use urban space in their habitual behavior and what are the related carbon footprint outcomes. The project will also demonstrate the value of PPGIS within the context of the 15-minute city concept and identify various urban lifestyles and the possible health and wellbeing outcomes. The expected results include the identification how individuals differ in their ways of using urban space depending on socio-economic background and individual lifestyles as well as the identification of urban structural characteristics that promote the accessibility of resources, especially with active travel modes. The project will also demonstrate how ‘soft’ place-based user knowledge is integrated with other ‘hard’ knowledge layers of the city to support knowledge informed planning.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher positions in the field of ice mechanics and model-scale testing

The research applies the state-of-the-art theories from the solid mechanics to describe the response and failure of ice. The description is utilized to describe the response of ice in laboratory conditions and to develop new scaling laws that are needed to interpret the observations between model-scale and full-scale. The doctoral students shall first deepen their understanding on beam theories to describe the response and failure of an ice beam. The knowledge is then applied to develop new scaling laws for model-scale testing and to validate the description through laboratory testing. The two doctoral theses are planned to be done in close collaboration where one focuses more on the theoretical part and one on the experimental part. Your work will be supported by Marine and Arctic Technology group which has vast experience on theoretical and experimental solid mechanics in full-scale, laboratory and model-scale testing. The project is done in collaboration with the experts from Texas A&M University (US) and Clarkson University (US). A researcher visit to these entities may be possible within this work.

About Aalto University, Finland –Official Website

Aalto University  is a university located in Espoo, Finland. It was established in 2010 as a merger of three major Finnish universities: the Helsinki University of Technology (established 1849), the Helsinki School of Economics (established 1904), and the University of Art and Design Helsinki (established 1871). The close collaboration between the scientific, business and arts communities is intended to foster multi-disciplinary education and research. The Finnish government, in 2010, set out to create a university that fosters innovation, merging the three institutions into one.

The university is composed of six schools with close to 17,500 students and 4,000 staff members, making it Finland’s second largest university. The main campus of Aalto University is located in Otaniemi, Espoo. Aalto University Executive Education operates in the district of Töölö, Helsinki. In addition to the Greater Helsinki area, the university also operates its Bachelor’s Programme in International Business in Mikkeli and the Metsähovi Radio Observatory in Kirkkonummi.

Aalto University’s operations showcase Finland’s experiment in higher education. The Aalto Design Factory, Aalto Ventures Program and Aalto Entrepreneurship Society (Aaltoes), among others, drive the university’s mission for a radical shift towards multidisciplinary learning and have contributed substantially to the emergence of Helsinki as a hotbed for startups.Aaltoes is Europe’s largest and most active student run entrepreneurship community that has founded major concepts such as the Startup Sauna accelerator program and the Slush startup event.

The university is named in honour of Alvar Aalto, a prominent Finnish architect, designer and alumnus of the former Helsinki University of Technology, who was also instrumental in designing a large part of the university’s main campus in Otaniemi.
