PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researchers (PhD students) in DNA nanotechnology, molecular self-assembly, active plasmonics and artificial molecular machines
You will work on design, fabrication, and characterization of electrically driven nanoscale molecular machines. As a member of the group, you will be trained in advanced methods in DNA nanotechnology (especially DNA origami), and state-of-the-art electron beam and optical microscopy and nanoscopy techniques. Depending on the background and scientific interests, your research will be directed either towards i) fabrication of active plasmonic surfaces and biosensors; or ii) construction of artificial molecular motors. We expect you to propose and develop scientific ideas and technical solutions (both individually and as part of a team), write scientific articles and contribute to teaching.
Deadline : 31.8.2023

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Topological Photonics
You will learn about the theory of topological phases in photonics with a focus on designing and manipulating light at the nanoscale level using novel concepts. Through a combination of theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, you will explore the interplay between time-varying media and the topological quantum aspects of light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. You will study how topological defects, such as light polarization vortices, interact with Berry curvature of the bands. Additionally, you will explore the potential of “synthetic dimensions” as an alternative means of implementing topology in a photonic system, investigating whether they can provide novel phenomena such as exceptional nodal points or richer topological effects. Your research will develop a theory for radiation topology and phase transitions in nanophotonics, understanding the interplay of topology with non-Hermitian effects, such as dissipation and outcoupling. Your results may open opportunities for designing novel topological photonic devices.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Virtual Acoustics
Position 1
In this project, we study the collective experience in a naturalistic, live music performance experience. All subjects have fixed roles, i.e., music performers or audience members. Also, the music performance follows a fixed and repeatable timeline. The collective experience is measured with passive and active methods. Performers and audience members are equipped with physiological measurement devices such as synchronized heart rate measurements, and their movements are tracked with optical tracking. Further, the audience members indicate their valence with a slider during the performance. We explore the contributing social and acoustic factors to the experience based on the gathered data. The research will be done in the Virtual Acoustics research team, led by Prof. Tapio Lokki, whose team is well known for their work on room acoustics, particularly concert hall studies.
Position 2
In this project, we develop an augmented acoustics system to manipulate the room acoustics during the music performance to disentangle its impact on the collective experience. The augmented acoustic system is refined to optimize the quality necessary for the perceptual study. A series of listening tests characterize the perceived naturalness of the added reverberation. A systematic analysis of the multi-channel room transfer functions enables improved microphone and loudspeaker placement and coupling to resonances. We develop novel technical algorithms to enhance the naturalness, ease of tuning, and computational requirements. The research will be done in the Sound in Virtual Reality team, led by Prof. Sebastian J. Schlecht, whose team is well known for their work on virtual acoustics, particularly artificial reverberation.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Wood Materials Technology
Wood construction can play a significant role in mitigating climate change. However, we need to use forest resources thoughtfully to ensure their health and maintain all ecosystems services. Reusing wood building products in a materials cascade can help lower the demand for virgin wood and, for this reason, there is increasing interest in reusing wood recovered from building demolitions and other sources. This valuable resource is however poorly understood in terms of its quality and properties, so it requires further research.

About Aalto University, Finland –Official Website
Aalto University is a university located in Espoo, Finland. It was established in 2010 as a merger of three major Finnish universities: the Helsinki University of Technology (established 1849), the Helsinki School of Economics (established 1904), and the University of Art and Design Helsinki (established 1871). The close collaboration between the scientific, business and arts communities is intended to foster multi-disciplinary education and research. The Finnish government, in 2010, set out to create a university that fosters innovation, merging the three institutions into one.
The university is composed of six schools with close to 17,500 students and 4,000 staff members, making it Finland’s second largest university. The main campus of Aalto University is located in Otaniemi, Espoo. Aalto University Executive Education operates in the district of Töölö, Helsinki. In addition to the Greater Helsinki area, the university also operates its Bachelor’s Programme in International Business in Mikkeli and the Metsähovi Radio Observatory in Kirkkonummi.
Aalto University’s operations showcase Finland’s experiment in higher education. The Aalto Design Factory, Aalto Ventures Program and Aalto Entrepreneurship Society (Aaltoes), among others, drive the university’s mission for a radical shift towards multidisciplinary learning and have contributed substantially to the emergence of Helsinki as a hotbed for startups.Aaltoes is Europe’s largest and most active student run entrepreneurship community that has founded major concepts such as the Startup Sauna accelerator program and the Slush startup event.
The university is named in honour of Alvar Aalto, a prominent Finnish architect, designer and alumnus of the former Helsinki University of Technology, who was also instrumental in designing a large part of the university’s main campus in Otaniemi.
