PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Robotic Inspection Systems
The PhD project will be carried out in the Applied Artificial Intelligence (AAI) research group, and in collaboration with project partners in the European railway sector. A consequence of increased utilization of the railway systems is increased wear and increased risk of damage to the railway infrastructure. As a result, there’s a strong need of maintenance and repair of the railway infrastructure. Digitalization, AI, and robotics have been identified as potential solutions. For example, a novel contribution to more efficient railway maintenance and repair are digital twins. These intelligent simulations can be used to more precisely predict when a preventive maintenance measure should be carried out. Thus, the risk of sudden, unexpected breakdowns, which can be very costly and dangerous, is reduced. Traffic disruptions due to maintenance activities can also be minimized. However, they need to be continuously updated with fresh data. Together with the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), the Applied AI (AAI) research group at Chalmers-M2 is developing an autonomous railway robot research prototype for data collection, inspection, and repair of railway infrastructure. In the PhD project, building on our previous research, we aim to further develop the robotics inspection and repair system.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student Position in Quantum Chemistry
The questions asked in this project lie at the intersection between theoretical chemistry, physics, and quantum information science: How can we best simulate and analyze molecular systems with quantum hardware? How can we use chemical insight to better correct for the detrimental effects of noise in state-of-the-art quantum hardware? This project is part of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), a 12-year, billion-SEK initiative with the purpose of advancing Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of quantum technology, and to build a Swedish quantum computer. We currently have a 25 qubit quantum processor available for software experimentation. As a PhD student in this project, you will be closely interacting with postdocs and PhD students in WACQT to use this hardware for simulations of chemical systems.
Deadline : August 20, 2023

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in multi-fuel aircraft propulsion and noise predictions
This year we have two new projects launched in related to noval aircraft propulsion systems and noise predictions, one national and one EU collaborative project, together with Swedish key air operation institutes and top European institutes on aerospace research. This position’s field of research will concentrate on investigating propeller/ducted fan noise under highly distorted inflow condition, eg. boundary layer ingestion propulsion, establishing engine performance and noise prediction models for ultra high bypass turbofan and its multi-fuel variant, and realizing the noise reduction benefits of high precision navigation and environmentally friendly aircraft in real-world air traffic management scenarios.

PhD position summary/title: PhD-position in Industrial De-carbonization
The research group in which you will be active has developed heat transfer models of these alternative high temperature process steps for some time and are now in the stage where the full process line should be modeled and optimized. The project is performed in direct collaboration with industrial partners including technology providers as well as end users.
Your work will involve both planing, execution and evaluation of experimental campaigns as well as modeling with tools like Aspen Plus and in-house developed models (Matlab, Python). Part of the work will be based on methods of which there is extensive experience in the research group at Energy Technology, but the project will also involve development of new methodologies. Your work will be performed in collaboration with industrial partners as well as other researchers and it will be part of your responsibilities to keep contact with the project partners. An important part of your responsibilities is also to efficiently communicate your results through scientific conferences and journals as well as project meetings and reports.
