PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in image acquisition and reconstruction for cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides uniquely comprehensive cardiac evaluations, serving as the reference standard for assessing the cause of heart failure by quantifying chamber volumes, ventricular function, and myocardial tissue characterization related to infarction and scarring. The biggest challenge for cardiovascular MRI (CMR) lies in the need for imaging during suspended respiration, limiting acquisition time, spatial resolution, and temporal resolution. Importantly, many cardiac patients suffer from shortness of breath and an inability to hold their breath, which makes them difficult or impossible to image using current CMR techniques. Nevertheless, the incorporation of advanced image acquisition techniques and machine learning is starting to fundamentally change what we can analyze and resolve. Specifically, our group recently introduced the sector-wise golden angle radial (SWIG) method, enabling high-quality images at high acceleration factors and unprecedented temporal resolutions in cardiac MRI, opening for novel diagnostic paradigms. As a Ph.D. student, you will continue these advancements by exploring and implementing novel image acquisition and reconstruction methods that expand the capabilities of the sector-wise acquisition paradigm. Based in a highly translational research environment, the Ph.D. project specifically seeks to (1) enable motion-adaptive image acquisitions using multi-modal sensor input; (2) couple this to developments in image reconstruction and image analysis to form a framework for motion-adaptive imaging; and (3) investigate how motion-adaptive cardiac imaging expands our understanding of complex cardiac disease. You will have access to state-of-the-art MRI systems and will directly deploy and evaluate novel research developments in a clinical environment.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (PhD) student position in Bioinformatics study of human skin wound healing
The chronic non-healing wound is a common and severe medical problem with unclear pathogenesis. The discovery of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) as powerful gene regulators provides hope in the quest to develop novel RNA-based treatments for a wide variety of diseases; however, the role of ncRNAs in human skin wound healing remains largely unexplored. We aim to reveal the expression and functional signatures of ncRNAs (primarily focusing on microRNAs, circular RNAs, and long ncRNAs) in human skin wound healing, and to identify ncRNAs that may be targeted in wound therapy. The current method spectrum of the group is centered around molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry with human cells and tissues as well as mouse models but will be expanded. We are looking for a doctoral student who will implement bioinformatic approaches to analyze data generated with various high-throughput technologies to profile expression and modification of RNAs, RNA-protein-DNA interactome, chromatin accessibility and DNA methylation in human skin/wound tissues and cells. The work will include design of study, data processing, quality control, statistical analyses, data interpretation and presentation of findings in the form of scientific publications. We offer a very stimulating and welcoming working environment in a group of motivated co-workers with diverse competencies.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (PhD) student position in pharmacoepidemiology
The aim with any IBD medication is inflammation free remission for the patient. To what extent this is achieved in routine clinical practice, outside the pivotal trials (almost always restricted to adults fulfilling strict inclusion criteria, far from routine clinical practice in pediatrics) is currently unknown. It is currently even unknown how well longitudinal data on inflammatory status can be captured using routinely collected data in Swedish IBD patients today. Real-world comparisons of the safety of different new targeted immunomodulatory treatments in childhood-onset IBD patients is currently scant at best. Until now, almost all patients have been treated according to a more or less strict “treatment ladder”, making fair comparisons between drugs at different steps in the ladder all but impossible. With a rapidly increasing choice of drugs, more and more alternatives at a given “step” in the ladder it will be possible to better than ever before describe the true comparative risk of infections in childhood-onset IBD patients exposed to different immunomodulatory drugs.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in immunology/immunotherapy
We are looking for a highly motivated individual who has a strong documented interest in immunology, tumor biology and cellular immunotherapy, and ideally with proven skills in molecular biology and genetic engineering. The doctoral candidate will work in the team of Arnika Wagner on developing new engineered surface receptors for NK cells and investigating the anti-tumor capacity, the potential for combination therapies as well as potential off-target and side effects of these genetically modified NK cells. The project entails working with expansions and genetic modification of NK cells from healthy donors and patients with Multiple Myeloma. The methods involve immunological, molecular and cell biology methods, such as genome editing and genetic modification techniques, antibiotic-free cell culture under GMP-like conditions, multiparametric flow cytometry, molecular cloning and virus production. In addition, assays to assess transcriptional activity, metabolism and secretome will be performed. We expect that the successful candidate will lead the project under supervision and will gradually acquire independence in planning, executing, analyzing and presenting data. We collaborate with several research groups both nationally and internationally, and the candidate will play an active role in driving the part of collaboration related to their project. Excellent communication skills with the ability to present results clearly, work co-operatively as part of a team as well as independently, with strong attention to details are essential. Personal suitability is of great importance when evaluating the applicants.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (PhD) student position in epidemiology
According to the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), it is “virtually certain” that anthropogenically-driven global warming has led to an increased frequency, duration and intensity of heatwaves since 1950, a trend that is foreseen to continue in the coming decades. Concurrently, cold spells in several mid-latitude regions continue to be the norm, in part due to enhanced temperature variability. This points to the urgency of reducing the impacts on the most vulnerable by developing new recommendations and long-term mitigation strategies.

About The Karolinska Institute, Sweden – Official Website
The Karolinska Institute sometimes known as the (Royal) Caroline Institute in English is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area of Sweden. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The assembly consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. The current rector of Karolinska Institute is Ole Petter Ottersen, who took office in August 2017.
The Karolinska Institute was founded in 1810 on the island of Kungsholmen on the west side of Stockholm; the main campus was relocated decades later to Solna, just outside Stockholm. A second campus was established more recently in Flemingsberg, Huddinge, south of Stockholm.
The Karolinska Institute is Sweden’s third oldest medical school, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). It is one of Sweden’s largest centres for training and research, accounting for 30% of the medical training and more than 40% of all academic medical and life science research conducted in Sweden.
The Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Huddinge, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic health science centre. While most of the medical programs are taught in Swedish, the bulk of the PhD projects are conducted in English. The institute’s name is a reference to the Caroleans.
