Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Macrophage Immunology
We are seeking an ambitious and highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join Dr Fernando Martinez Estrada and Dr Agnieszka Michael,at the Innate Immunity laboratory in the Section of Immunology, School of Biosciences, University of Surrey. The Innate Immunity group focuses on the Mononuclear Phagocyte System (MPS) cells including monocytes, dendritic cells and macrophages. We investigate the role that these cells play in cancer to identify opportunities for clinical applications. In this project we will examine the heterogeneity and function of tumour associated macrophages in Ovarian Cancer. We will study the role of the MPS system, with a special interest in lipid-rich macrophage phenotypes. We will use state of the art methodology to investigate the predisposition and consequences of lipid accumulation in the cells. We aim to bring MPS applications closer to patients and to understand how altering their properties may lead to therapeutic opportunities.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher
This exciting new project is designed to shape the future of research with individuals with intellectual disability (ID). Intellectual disability (ID) affects millions of people’s lives in the UK, yet research priorities are very rarely shaped by individuals with ID themselves. This project will begin to address this imbalance. The aim of this project is to outline the current landscape of UK research on ID and compare this with the research priorities of the ID communities themselves. We will also produce training in participatory research methods, specifically focussed on participatory research with ID communities. The outputs from this project will inform decisions about future investment in ID research and will further enable our research field to embrace participatory research effectively.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Open RAN Intelligent Network Automation
The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) is looking to recruit a research fellow in Open RAN Intelligent Network Automation. This exciting post will be researching advanced radio access network (RAN) technology in order to achieve network self-organisation. We focus on developing machine learning algorithms to optimise various KPIs of a O-RAN. The focus of the project the post holder will contribute to, is mainly on developing machine learning algorithms, particularly reinforcement learning, to improve flexibility of 5G with O-RAN architecture. This project is a 1-year research and development work on O-RAN including machine learning algorithms, O-RAN RIC and xApps. The research is mainly carried out using simulation/emulation with some mathematical analysis, and the machine learning algorithms are to be implemented in Python.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Machine Learning for PPG Signals
The aim of this multidisciplinary project is to develop a machine learning model which takes a photoplethysmography (PPG) signal as input and predicts the blood glucose level. If such an algorithm was included in a smart watch, then it would provide non-invasive continuous glucose monitoring which would be invaluable for diabetics. Diabetics have to monitor their blood glucose levels several times a day. This is often done by pricking a finger to obtain a blood sample for analysis which only gives a measurement at a single point in time. Continuous blood glucose monitors are available, but they are invasive and expensive.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow (Postdoctoral Research Associate)
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research fellow which is available immediately in the Food and Molecular Immunology research group led by Professor Clare Mills in the Immunology Section of the School of Biosciences and Medicine, University of Surrey. The post forms part of an ongoing collaboration with Waters Corporation and the Respiratory Medicine Group at the University of Manchester and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. The overall focus of the post is to investigate the molecular basis of immunological responses to infections and allergic responses to foods using multi’omics approaches, linking molecular profiles to clinical phenotypes. This makes use of biological and clinical samples from the Manchester Respiratory Medicine team collected through the Manchester Allergy, Respiratory and Thorasic Surgery Biobank and the iFAAM and PAFA projects and the recently funded Horizon Europe project GiantLeaps. These will be used to support the development and refinement of cell based models mimicking the epithelial environments (particularly the gut and the lungs) in inflamed (e.g. allergic) and healthy (e.g. tolerant) states.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Research Fellow
This project will focus on designing and optimising a bioelectrochemical system (BES) to recover high purity Li. Exploiting the ability of some microbial species to transfer electrons to external acceptors, we will design a microbial electrochemical system to recover Li from LiB waste, focusing on the main aspects affecting the process: microorganisms, reactor configuration, electrodes, metal concentration, substrates, etc. We will screen diverse microbial species and communities for their capability to remove Li from the waste and test them in different reactor designs (microbial fuel, electrochemical and desalination cells, and tubular reactors). This will provide qualitative and quantitative correlations between metal removal, microbial community composition, electrochemical performance, and the characterisation of different designs of microbial electrochemical reactors for efficient processing of LiB waste.
