PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION IN THE SOCIOLOGY OF GREEN TRANSITION

The PhD student will be part of the project ‘Masculinities in Green Transition. Negotiating Gender Norms and Transforming Men’s Practices’ (MANTRA), financed by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The MANTRA-project takes as its starting point that climate changes and gender are inextricably linked as a socially sustainable green transition requires the commitment and participation of women and men on an equal footing. In Denmark, large population surveys have identified a gender difference: Danish men stand out as being less climate ambitious than women and less willing to change their everyday practices. The aim of the PhD project is to identify and analyze how views of manhood and characteristics of what it means to be a ‘real’ man influence Danish men’s beliefs about climate changes and their openness  towards adjusting their everyday practices; and, further, how masculinity in the Danish setting are being negotiated in light of the rise in new, and at times polarized, understandings of what is, in the current situation, viewed as acceptable vis-à-vis unacceptable consumption patterns and lifestyle adjustments.

PhD position summary/title: PH.D.-STIPENDIAT INDEN FOR PSYKOLOGI TILKNYTTET FORSKNINGSPROJEKTET PLACES: PSYCHOPATHOLOGY IN ECOSOCIAL NICHES

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND ON MICROBIAL COMMUNITIES IN ACTIVATED SLUDGE AND THEIR BIOPOLYMERS

The PhD stipend is part of the project “Recovery of extracellular polymers from wastewater treatment residuals as a new circular biopolymer (REThiNk)”, funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The overall goal is to promote the transition of wastewater treatment plants into production facilities by turning excess activated sludge into valuable biopolymers via extraction of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) found in the biomass. The research of this PhD project will primarily focus on global community structure of full-scale activated sludge plants, factors controlling their assembly, and the relation of individual members to the production of various EPS components based on mining of metagenome assembled genomes. We seek a motivated young scientist with experience with DNA sequencing, genomics, bioinformatics, EPS, and wastewater treatment microbiology. Applicants must have a Master of Science (MSc.) degree in Microbiology, Biotechnology, or similar from an internationally recognized university with practical experience analyzing community composition, multivariate statistics, metagenomics, bioinformatics, EPS, and wastewater treatment microbiology. The project will take part in collaboration with partners at Aarhus University and Delft Technical University, so short terms stay can be expected. We expect good collaboration skills, team spirit, and the ability to work independently and an excellent level of both spoken and written English. Limited teaching within the area can be expected, but also in other study programmes at the University.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPENDS IN THE AREA OF GRAPH DATA MANAGEMENT, MINING, SYSTEMS, AND MACHINE LEARNING ON GRAPHS

Human-in-the-loop Data Mining and Deep Learning on Graph Data: Graph data, e.g. social and biological networks, financial transactions, transportation systems, and telecommunication networks are pervasive in the natural world, where nodes are entities with features and edges represent relations among them. Machine learning and deep learning over graphs become ubiquitous, for instance, in cheminformatics (drug discovery, designing molecular structures with desired properties, virtual screening) and bioinformatics (drug-disease association and protein interaction prediction), detecting malwares and abnormal transactions, classifying customers based on calling behavior, feeds on Twitter, Facebook, and churn prediction. Despite deep learning models often achieving state-of-the-art performance in many tasks, they are “black-boxes”: It is difficult to understand which aspects of the input graph data drive the decisions of the model. Interpretability can improve the model’s transparency related to fairness, privacy, and other safety challenges, thus enhancing the trust in decision-critical applications and ease their adoption in life science, health, law enforcement, and financial domains. To this aim, we shall design a user-in-the-loop interpretation framework that translates deep learning-based findings back to users, supports “why” and “why-not” questions over prediction results (e.g., “why a new app is classified as a malware”? Or “what minimum, valid changes in a molecule structure would optimize desired chemical and biological properties”?), assists users in formulating relevant questions with minimum efforts, and incorporate users’ interactive feedback to improve training data and deep learning models.

(10) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH IN INTEGRATION OF 5G AND NON-TERRESTRIAL NETWORKS FOR EXTENDING BROADBAND CONNECTIVITY IN RURAL AND REMOTE AREAS

Over the last years, the importance and need for broadband and high-speed connectivity has constantly increased. The COVID-19 pandemic has even accelerated this process towards a more connected society. But this holds mainly true for urban communities. In Europe, lack access still persists concerning, mainly, the most rural and remote areas. Those are the most challenging to address since they are the least commercially attractive. Within this context, the PhD study will explore connectivity solutions aimed at bridging the digital divide, by providing robust, reliable, and secure broadband access for all in rural, agricultural, and remote areas, integrating Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) with terrestrial 5G cellular networks and low-cost Internet of Things (IoT). In particular, the PhD work will focus on the design, development, and testing of multi-connectivity solutions applied to the connected agriculture and livestock transport.
