We are in an increasing need to access personalized, adaptive, and dynamic information in real time. Advanced enabling technologies for Metaverse, such as AI, AR/VR, Web3.0, IoT, NFT, and edge computing, provide us ample possibilities by embedding the information in an appropriate time and space, which provides users new ways to interact with both the physical and the virtual world. These emerging technologies are changing the landscape of news organizations and media industries. On the one hand, emerging technologies create new opportunities for news organizations. For example, VR allows users to have a deeper level of interaction, connectedness and empathy with news stories. Robot journalism (i.e., automated journalism) allows news organizations to test headlines, source information and identify trending stories. Wearable journalism, using AR smart glasses or contact lenses, allows instant update and composition of stories. On the other hand, technologies such as image manipulation, deep fakes, fake news certainly speed up the spread of misinformation and pose threats to authentic media. This project will investigate both the bright side and the dark side that emerging technologies play in the media sector.

PhD position summary/title: A PhD candidate researching the consequences of mHealth on well-being
Over the past years, the use of everyday healthy lifestyle apps (e.g, Apple Health, Samsung Health, Health Connect, Garmin Connect) has increased dramatically. What are the consequences of algorithmic decision systems in these mHealth applications for their users? This project focuses on user perceptions of the (potential) impact of automated decision systems in their daily health app on public values (e.g., privacy, autonomy/self-governance, integrity, solidarity) and the effects on user well-being. There will be special attention for social equality and inclusion. The project will draw on a multimethod citizen science approach, including for example co-creation, panel survey, and mobile tracking.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in brain development & addiction (0,8FTE)
Adolescence marks rapid surges in alcohol and cannabis addiction, but also remarkable recovery rates, as most adolescent addictions naturally resolve over time. Brain development holds an import key to understanding the brain’s recovery potential. Within an ERC-funded project, you will conduct a longitudinal neuroimaging study that aims to unravel addiction risk and resilience in adolescents and adults. Together with 1 other PhD candidate, you will be responsible for protocol development, participant recruitment, and data collection, management and analysis. Measures of brain activity, connectivity and structure will eventually be combined with behavioral data to test the predictive value of social and cognitive processes for changes in cannabis and alcohol abuse over time. As such, you will learn to handle different modalities of neuroimaging data.

We are recruiting a PhD candidate for a project on resilient health care financing, with a focus on care for the older population. Health systems in the EU are under pressure due to changes such as large-scale disease outbreaks, but also population ageing which have simultaneously increased the demand for health care while also putting a strain on resources. Your research will contribute to the pressing need in the EU to redesign health care financing systems to become more flexible and resilient to both short-term and long-term shocks. The project will use an economics perspective to find solutions for the increased demand for healthcare. You will apply state-of-the art econometric techniques to novel data linkages to analyze how: (1) healthcare financing can be made more resilient to shocks in health and health care demand, such as the Covid-19 pandemic. (2) integration between different health care systems can contribute to more efficient care delivery and better patient outcomes.
