PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION ON A PROJECT RELATED TO “COOPERATION AND RATIONALITY”

Possible projects: in many situations, agents often have reasons both for and against cooperating. What makes cooperation nevertheless successful? This question can be approached both descriptively and normatively. In the descriptive realm, empirical research has looked at  investigating the factors that foster cooperation. In the normative domain, philosophical work has been dedicated to discussing various conceptions of rationality. We invite projects situated at the interface of these two fields, which raises questions such as: Which conception(s) of rationality are actually at work in empirical studies of cooperation? And which ones would be best suited for understanding cooperation?

PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION: MOLECULAR INTERACTIONS IN ASTROCYTE-SYNAPSE CONTROL OF MEMORY

We are looking for a candidate for a 4 years PhD project to be carried out at the Department of Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology (MCN). Recent studies have shown that in addition to neurons, astrocytes play a major role in synaptic function. Whereas hundreds of neuronal synaptic proteins have been identified, and functional insight into their role in synaptic transmission is increasing, it is largely unknown which astrocyte proteins are involved in physical interaction with synapses and how they execute control over synaptic function. The overall aim of the project is to obtain in-depth insight into the molecular mechanism that controls synaptic function in memory circuitry by dynamically changing astrocyte-synapse interactions.

PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION: COMBINING LARGE LANGUAGE MODELS AND KNOWLEDGE GRAPHS

The Large Language Models (LLMs) that have emerged in recent years have shown impressive performance in a variety of tasks, but they also fail in many, and often unpredictable ways. The hypothesis underlying this PhD position is that LLMs and Knowledge Graphs have complementary strengths and weaknesses. The goal of this project is to design a set of empirically well-grounded methods for combining LLMs and KGs, in both directions: the use of LLMs to complement the incomplete knowledge in KGs, and the use of KGs to improve the unsound answers that are often produced by LLMs. Furthermore, KGs and LLMs may create a mutually beneficial construction cycle: using KGs to specialize pre-trained LLMs to a specific domain, and using LLMs to increase the coverage of KGs.

PhD position summary/title: A PHD POSITION ON CYBERSECURITY FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES (SMES)

Cybersecurity training is fundamental to help employees protect themselves and their companies against cyberattacks and threats. However, many organisational and economical limitations hinder companies, particularly SMEs, in effectively training their personnel. The project proposes a novel training system to create innovative techniques for training cybersecurity in SEMs. This opens new technical challenges for training implementation and delivery, such as effectively using virtualisation, dedicated cyber-range simulations in operational settings, and effective threat analysis for risk management. The automated approaches supporting these activities are crucial to the success of innovative cybersecurity training for SMEs. Therefore, the developed techniques will require rigorous validation including experimental and empirical studies, case studies and interviews conducted with partners.

PhD position summary/title: A PHD POSITION ON SECURITY AND INTELLIGENCE ON AUTOMATION AND EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF HUMAN SECURITY DECISIONS

For security threat intelligence humans and artificial intelligence collaborate to obtain actionable intelligence. Their sources and methods often have significant uncertainties and biases. Experts are aware of such limitations but lack formal means to handle these uncertainties in their daily work. You will collectively work towards the high-level goals of building a “metadata of uncertainty’’ for threat intelligence (in both machine-readable and also human-interpretable forms) and validating it empirically. Intelligence agencies could then explicitly reason about the trade-off between accuracy, proportionality, privacy and cost-effectiveness of investigations. This contributes to using AI for a better security and securing AI for a better society.

PhD position summary/title: PHD (4 YEARS) POSITION “A SOCIAL-PSYCHOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF CROSS-GENDER INTERACTIONS IN THE WORKPLACE POST #METOO”

As gender diversity within organizations increases, so do interactions between men and women in workplaces around the globe. Compared to same-gender interactions, cross-gender interactions at work are laced with more uncertainty and can lead to discomfort and even harassment. Anecdotal evidence suggest that challenges surrounding cross-gender interactions at work have accelerated over the last years in response to the #MeToo movement. In this movement, that took off in 2017, numerous professional women around the world, spoke out about their experiences with sexual harassment and abuse of power at work. This movement sparked a worldwide debate about sexual harassment in the workplace and reshaped the boundaries of what is thought of as appropriate or inappropriate cross-gender behavior at work. The present PhD project examines the social-psychological consequences of these developments for cross-gender interactions at work. We focus on the following research question: What are the implications of the #MeToo movement for cross-gender interactions in the workplace? We will use a set of quantitative research methods to answer this question, including survey, experimental, and intervention studies.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STUDENT IN CELLULAR METABOLOMICS

Metabolism is pervasive in every aspect of biology. Metabolic regulation is behind understanding fundamental molecular aspects that govern health and disease. Our laboratory aims to study the fundamentals of cellular metabolism and its drug-induced perturbations using state-of-the-art analytical technologies. This PhD position is centred on developing metabolomics workflows to be applied in studying the dynamics of cellular metabolism using isotope tracers. We are therefore looking for a motivated PhD student to conduct research on cellular metabolism by developing and implementing LC-MS and NMR-based metabolomics.

About  The Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands –Official Website

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.

In 2014, the VU had 23,656 registered students, most of whom were full-time students. That year, the university had 2,263 faculty members and researchers, and 1,410 administrative, clerical and technical employees, based on FTE units. The university’s annual endowment for 2014 was circa €480 million. About three quarters of this endowment is government funding; the remainder is made up of tuition fees, research grants, and private funding.

The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
