PhD position summary/title: PHD IN PRECISION TRAPPED-ION QUANTUM METROLOGY
The Standard Model of physics is still far from complete: there is an unexplained asymmetry between matter and antimatter, gravity is not included and dark matter and dark energy are not understood. In this project you will develop a trapped-ion quantum sensor based on Ba+ to investigate these intriguing problems. You will build-up a vacuum apparatus and various laser systems to trap, manipulate and detect single ions. You will implement advanced experimental methods to cool ions to near the motional ground state in the trap and reach long interrogation times. You will explore techniques developed in the field of quantum information science to further improve the measurement sensitivity of the sensor. You will apply the developed techniques to determine isotopic shifts of narrow transitions in Ba+ to search for yet undiscovered interactions between electrons and neutrons mediated by a hypothetical new boson.

PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION “THE ROLES OF ATTENTION AND MEMORY IN READING”
In this project, we’ll investigate the roles of attention and working memory in reading. In particular, we’ll look at how attention is distributed across the visual field during text reading, and at how word recognition is influenced by sentence-level representations that are (believed to be) maintained in working memory. In doing so, we hope to account for several interesting phenomena, such as how readers fail to notice the mistake in the phrase “Do love you me?“. Lastly, we will investigate to what extent visuo-spatial attention operates differently in readers with dyslexia. The research project will rely on the use of behavioral measures (eye movements, response times, accuracy) and neurophysiological techniques (EEG).

PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION ON HYBRID HUMAN-AI CREATIVITY
This project aims to endow generative AI systems with the ability to engage in a bidirectional dialog with a creator rather than being seen merely as a tool that translates a creator’s idea into an output. Elements such as surprise, serendipity, and the exploration/exploitation tradeoff, are ideas that will be central to this project. Through this process we expect the human to be enriched in their current and future creative processes, rather than simply being more efficient at generating “satisfactory” output.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STUDENT CARING UNIVERSITIES
Digital psychotherapeutic self-help interventions are effective for solving mental health problems and are also easily scalable. The most effective interventions also offer professional support, so that you don’t have to do it alone. Classic self-help interventions follow a fixed and complete program, while participants may benefit more from a focused and shorter program. You will examine exactly this within the ‘ Caring Universities ‘ project.
In Caring Universities 9 major Dutch universities (Maastricht University, Leiden University, Utrecht University, VU University and Erasmus University Rotterdam) and universities of applied sciences ( InHolland University of Applied Sciences , Avans University of Applied Sciences and Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences) are working together to explore mental problems of students and – where possible – to prevent and improve these problems with online therapy. The Caring Universities project is part of a global initiative with the same objectives: the ‘World Mental Health International College Student initiative’.

PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION “PARENTING AND CHILDREN’S ONLINE BEHAVIOR”
The aim of the project is to address the question how parents can support their children in navigating the online world in a way that they can utilize the chances and be resilient against the risks they encounter online. This project aims to examine similarities and differences between children with developmental problems such as ADHD and autism, and children without developmental problems with regard to their online behavior: Which apps and programs do they use and how long? Who do they interact with online? Which risks and chances do they encounter and how does this impact their wellbeing? Second, the project aims to examine the role of parenting behavior such as limit setting, sensitivity and scaffolding and the parent-child relationship in these processes. Questionnaires, interviews, observations of parents and children and digital means of data-collection will be used to answer these questions. The findings of this project will contribute to evidence-based advice for parents of children with developmental problems and for parents of children without developmental problems with regard to children’s media use.

PhD position summary/title: PHD HORIZON EUROPE MSCA DOCTORAL NETWORK “MELOMANES”*
A single therapy is not efficient to tackle metastatic melanoma and a combination of therapies is thus emerging as a necessity to efficiently eradicate all cancer cells. Recently, the development of immunotherapies has shown promises, in particular chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells. Nevertheless, the physical barriers represented by cellular and non-cellular components of the tumor microenvironment combined to the abnormal tumor vasculature and high interstitial fluid pressure, hamper an efficient tumor infiltration of CAR-T cells. In this context, thanks to a network of 18 partners (including 10 non-academic partners), MELOMANES aims to train 12 doctoral researchers for the development of a combined therapy exploiting the properties of magnetic nanoparticles to induce damage on the tumor microenvironment by magnetic and optic hyperthermia in order to facilitate the infiltration of CAR-T cells. Research and transferable training of the doctoral researchers will be performed in a highly interdisciplinary, intersectoral, and international environment. In addition to acquiring skills related to the research project, they will be trained also in open science, communication and dissemination, responsible research and innovation, circular economy, ethics, data management, entrepreneurship, marketing, intellectual property, and gender dimension in research. Their competences will be validated through certification and qualification examination, allowing a new generation of highly skilled doctoral researchers to emerge with a high-level training in particular in the multidisciplinary field of nanomedicine.

About The Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands –Official Website
The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.
In 2014, the VU had 23,656 registered students, most of whom were full-time students. That year, the university had 2,263 faculty members and researchers, and 1,410 administrative, clerical and technical employees, based on FTE units. The university’s annual endowment for 2014 was circa €480 million. About three quarters of this endowment is government funding; the remainder is made up of tuition fees, research grants, and private funding.
The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
