(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Research Fellow in Global Mental Health Implementation Science

The Department of Global Health and Social Medicine seeks a postdoctoral fellow to support the scientific and research activities for multiple studies focused on leveraging innovative digital technologies for scaling up proven psychosocial interventions across different settings in India. A key focus of these different research studies involves evaluating the implementation of mental health services in primary care settings. One project consists of a cluster-RCT evaluating the use of a remote implementation support strategy for building capacity and facilitating the delivery of depression care in primary care settings in rural India. Another project aims to leverage a novel digital platform for supporting the uptake and integration of a psychosocial rehabilitation intervention delivered by non-specialists for patients with schizophrenia in primary care settings in India. These studies involve collaboration among Harvard Medical School and the Division of Digital Psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in the United States, as well as Sangath, AIIMS Bhopal, and NIMHANS in India. They are led by John Naslund at Harvard Medical School, in collaboration with leading researchers in the United States and India. This postdoctoral fellowship involves considerable fieldwork, collaborating and liaising with project partners and funders. While based at Harvard Medical School in Boston, this position requires frequent travel and stays over extended periods (2-4 weeks at a time) at the research sites in India coordinated by Sangath, the primary project partner organization, in Bhopal, India. The contributions to scientific knowledge include expanding the global mental health implementation science literature, advancing task sharing efforts in low-resource settings with emphasis on improving functional outcomes for individuals living with severe mental illness, and assessing the costs of using digital tools to support integration of evidence-based psychosocial interventions in primary care settings. This position focuses heavily on developing skills in global mental health research, digital health, and implementation science so that the Fellow will be positioned to lead independent studies at the conclusion of this position.

(14) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in On-Premise Computing for Autonomous Vehicles (Computer Architecture, Machine Learning and Runtime Systems)

Deep learning plays an essential role in the operation of an autonomous vehicle (AV), allowing for automated detection, prediction, mapping, and planning. During the vehicle’s operation, data is obtained through a myriad of sensors in an AV—including RADARLIDAR, cameras, and other advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) sensors. These sensors generate a vast amount of data concurrently, which need real-time processing (latency-bound throughput) for vehicle safety. A crucial challenge meeting this requirement is the simultaneous need for low-power consumption. The main objective of the project is to develop a complete end-to-end high-performance DNN system for on-premise computing applications—mainly for a SWaP-constrained AV—using hybrid electro-photonic accelerators. We propose to design and prototype a complete electro-photonic computing (EPiC) system (CPUs + accelerators), integrate it with the sensors in AV, and demonstrate its capability to perform perception, mapping, and planning while overcoming the power and performance limitations of CMOS-only computers. As our end goal, we plan to demonstrate a fully autonomous buggy that uses our EPiC system.

About Harvard University, USA – Official Website

Harvard University is a private Ivy League research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Established in 1636 and named for its first benefactor, clergyman John Harvard, Harvard is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States and among the most prestigious in the world.

The Massachusetts colonial legislature, the General Court, authorized Harvard’s founding. In its early years, Harvard College primarily trained Congregational and Unitarian clergy, although it has never been formally affiliated with any denomination. Its curriculum and student body were gradually secularized during the 18th century, and by the 19th century, Harvard had emerged as the central cultural establishment among the Boston elite. Following the American Civil War, President Charles William Eliot’s long tenure (1869–1909) transformed the college and affiliated professional schools into a modern research university; Harvard became a founding member of the Association of American Universities in 1900. James B. Conant led the university through the Great Depression and World War II; he liberalized admissions after the war.

The university is composed of ten academic faculties plus the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. Arts and Sciences offers study in a wide range of academic disciplines for undergraduates and for graduates, while the other faculties offer only graduate degrees, mostly professional. Harvard has three main campuses: the 209-acre (85 ha) Cambridge campus centered on Harvard Yard; an adjoining campus immediately across the Charles River in the Allston neighborhood of Boston; and the medical campus in Boston’s Longwood Medical Area. Harvard’s endowment is valued at $41.9 billion, making it the largest of any academic institution. Endowment income helps enable the undergraduate college to admit students regardless of financial need and provide generous financial aid with no loans.[ The Harvard Library is the world’s largest academic library system, comprising 79 individual libraries holding about 20.4 million items.

Harvard has more alumni, faculty, and researchers who have won Nobel Prizes (161) and Fields Medals (18) than any other university in the world and more alumni who have been members of the U.S. Congress, MacArthur Fellows, Rhodes Scholars (375), and Marshall Scholars (255) than any other university in the United States. Its alumni also include eight U.S. presidents and 188 living billionaires, the most of any university. Fourteen Turing Award laureates have been Harvard affiliates. Students and alumni have also won 10 Academy Awards, 48 Pulitzer Prizes, and 108 Olympic medals (46 gold), and they have founded many notable companies.
