PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Solid Mechanics with focus on experimental granular mechanics

Many natural and industrial material processes of granular and powder systems occur over a range of different spatio-temporal scales and involve complex local mechanisms between and within the constituent particles. Recent advances in x-ray imaging and diffraction methods have opened up new possibilities to explore the kinematics and stress distributions in granular materials, including at very high strain rates. Our group at Lund University has been at the forefront of some of these developments and we are now looking for a highly motivated person to work on a PhD project developing experiments to exploit these techniques in the exploration of deformation mechanisms, force transmission and dynamic effects in granular materials.

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Electrical Engineering with focus on heterogeneous distributed compute infrastructures

The next-generation wireless systems will have compute resources embedded deep into and throughout the infrastructure. The compute infrastructure will stretch from the radio interface to the public clouds, and the resources will be shared by applications ranging from low-level radio algorithms to very large web applications. To support such a diverse set of applications, the infrastructure will be composed of FPGAs, GPUs, and CPUs of various capabilities. For such a system to be useful and energy efficient, it needs to have a cohesive platform onto which applications can be deployed and managed across a vast heterogeneous compute infrastructure. For example, applications will have to be dynamically synthesised to different platforms, and dynamically migrated to where they incur the least energy usage, maintain an acceptable level of performance, and where the system, as a whole, stays operational.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Physics, focus on X-ray Multibeam ptychography

X-rays have a unique ability to investigate samples in their natural state, such as cells, proteins in solution or electronic devices potentially at resolutions up to the atomic level. The advent of diffraction-limited storage rings (MAX IV) has opened a whole new spectrum of applications due to their unprecedented brilliance. This project aims to develop and establish a novel X-ray imaging method, christened X-ray multibeam ptychography, capable of exploiting the whole flux provided by such facilities to enable imaging of large samples and more specimens. In particular, the candidate will work on the development and implementation of algorithms to reconstruct in the most efficient way the data provided by such a technique and help establishing such an instrument at MAX IV.

(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD in structural and functional protein bioinformatics

One of our main research directions concerns toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems of bacteria and bacteriophages, which has led to papers in PNAS(1) and Molecular Cell(2) on toxSAS enzymes that dramatically inhibit bacterial growth though producing poisonous nucleotides, or modifying tRNA, as well as a more recent preprint on the hyper promiscuous antitoxin domain that we have named Panacea(3). Our work on toxin-antitoxins, and their evolution, structure, function and biotechnological applications was recently supported by a generous grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation (see https://kaw.wallenberg.org/en/research/bacterias-emergency-stop-buttons). As a mechanism of defence against bacteriophages, TAs have significance for developing new biotechnological tools, as well as understanding and eventually overcoming natural barriers to phage therapy for treating antibiotic resistant infections.

(09) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral students in computer science

The PhD students will be working in the research group of Susanna de Rezende, where the focus is on computational complexity and algorithms.

At the heart of computational complexity theory is the quest to understand the nature of efficient computation. What makes a problem computationally hard or easy? How can we show that every algorithm that solves a certain problem must necessarily consume a large amount of resources (such as time or memory, say)? The study of the potential and limits of efficient computation is about foundational, mathematical, research, but research results in computational complexity theory have had major impact in other areas of computer science and other scientific disciplines, and have given rise to some of the most important open problems in modern mathematics.

About Lund University, Scania, Sweden – Official Website

Lund University  is a prestigious university in Sweden and one of northern Europe’s oldest universities. The university is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was officially founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral.

Lund University has nine faculties, with additional campuses in the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg, with 40,000 students in 270 different programmes and 1,300 freestanding courses. The university has some 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. Lund University is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities.

Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be opened in 2023.

The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
