PhD position summary/title:  PhD position Chemical approaches to study adhesin glycosylation (V23.0074)

With bacteria increasingly resistant to current antibiotics, new strategies to fight infection are needed. Bacterial adhesin proteins, which play an important role in the establishment of infection, appear to be promising targets for novel therapies. Adhesins enable the first contact between bacteria and host cells. We know that some adhesins are modified with highly unique sugars that are important for adhesin stability and adherence. However, we do not know how widespread this modification is among bacterial strains, and whether it constitutes a good target for antibacterial strategies. A lack of suitable methods for the detection of bacterial adhesin sugars has impeded the detailed study of these sugars, blocking further efforts to develop antibacterial strategies against bacterial adhesin sugars.

As a successful candidate you will work in the group of Prof. Julia Even at the van Swinderen Institute for Particle Physics and Gravity within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. You will be an active member of the interdisciplinary Dutch consortium “Probing the phase diagram of quantum chromodynamics”, which includes collaborators at Utrecht University (Prof. v.d. Broek) Dr. Christakoglou, Dr. Gürsoy, Dr. Hinderer, and Prof. Snellings), and the University of Amsterdam (Dr. Mösta, Dr. Nissanke, and Prof. Watts). In this ambitious project, you will perform precision mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclei to verify nuclear mass models and investigate their impact on the modelling of astrophysical processes. This project requires a passion for work in the laboratory and precision measurements as well as data analysis. Furthermore, you will interpret the data and discuss with colleagues from theoretical nuclear astrophysics.

We are seeking a candidate for a PhD project titled Sustainable inter-organizational networks for post-disaster recovery. This position focuses on organizational science, embedded in a collaboration between analytical sociologists and philosophers. The aim of the project is to investigate whether and how post-disaster community recovery (operationalized as population change and restoration of buildings) can be explained by variations in the sustainability of collaborations in inter-organizational networks. To this end, we will use budding yeast as a model and latest state-of-the-art fluorescence time-lapse microscopy and microfluidics as a key tool to uncover how metabolism performs this important function. Fluorescent reporter constructs will allow us to retrieve cell cycle-resolved information, and optogenetic tools and tools for inducible protein depletion will allow us to perturb the system dynamically and even with single-cell resolution. With combining in a clever manner knowledge from the literature, the insights from the dynamic observations during the cell cycle, and the targeted dynamic perturbations, we will be able to derive testable hypotheses on how metabolic cell cycle control is exerted.
