PhD position summary/title: PhD in Microalgae Biotechnology

In light of a joint research initiative “Let’s go VirAL” of the Laboratory of Virology and Bioprocess Engineering we are searching for a suitable candidate for a PhD project. This project aims to unravel the life cycle of a recently isolated DNA virus that infects microalgae, to enable development of a virus-based production platform in microalgae, which is also part of the aim of this project. A combined -omics and biochemical approach will be implemented to elucidate the virus life cycle at a molecular level during the course of infection and to identify and characterize the role of viral genes; this systematic study of virus infection in relation to host fitness will be carried out in small scale photobioreactors. The PhD candidate will develop knowledge and expertise in the field of genetics, biochemistry, virology and microalgae biotechnology. PhD position summary/title: PhD Mosquito ecology, surveillance and diagnostics

For predicting the epidemic or epizootic potential of diseases, it is critical to timely detect the circulation of pathogens, trace their (zoonotic) origins and establish which species contribute to transmission. This often requires elaborate tools and techniques that are not always available in areas where they matter most, such as in poor and remote communities in the Global South. Mosquitoes, but also the bloodmeals they carry, could be exploited to assess pathogen presence and circulation (not restricted to vector-borne pathogens). This approach is known as xenodiagnostics or xenosurveillance. The Laboratory of Entomology and the Bionanotechnology group of Wageningen University have teamed up to tackle this challenge. The team has close collaborations with Médécins Sans Frontieres to allow co-design and evaluation of suitable approaches/technologies. You will work on the development of a novel approach for catching and analyzing (blood-fed) mosquitoes based on (1) the exploitation of new lures to attract and trap (blood-fed) mosquitoes and (2) the development of low-cost and easy-to-use (molecular) tests for pathogen detection in mosquitoes. The project ultimately aims to contribute to improved disease surveillance systems and to new, environmentally friendly interventions to halt disease transmission. As part of this project, your duties include: (i) performing behavioral assays with different mosquito species using windtunnels and controlled release studies in our camera-equipped flight arenas and (ii) developing and optimizing protocols for manual or automatic nucleic acid extraction from the mosquitos (e.g. for LAMP or PCR based diagnostics) for pathogen identification and detection using controlled infection studies in the lab and mosquitoes collected in the field.

PhD position summary/title: Phd biodiversity modelling

In this project you will investigate how satellite data from various sources in combination with spatial models and machine learning can be used to measure biodiversity. Biodiversity is complex, yet it is essential that measurable biodiversity indicators are developed that can be analysed with satellite data across a wide range of ecosystems including in the tropics. These indicators are essential to support, for instance, biodiversity monitoring efforts, ecosystem accounting, and the monitoring and verification of biodiversity impacts of ESG investments.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Exploring the contribution of social and organizational solutions to enable a transition towards ecology-based mixed cropping systems in the Netherlands

The research programme CropMix is a Dutch Research Agenda initiative of a large interdisciplinary research team joining forces with the agricultural sector to achieve a breakthrough in the transition to sustainable arable farming. We study how crop diversity in the field can benefit from and enhance ecological processes, among others to reduce the use of pesticides and fertilisation. CropMix also investigates which societal and institutional changes in the food system are needed to enable and accelerate the transition to sustainable mixed crop production. This is done by setting up three living labs for a diversity of potential transition paths, such as short local chains, organic farming or adaptation of existing national and international value chains. In these living labs the diverse stakeholders will explore common ground in order to re-evaluate the research agenda and undertake joint actions.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Demand-Led Scaling in the CGIAR

The scaling of innovations (novel technologies, products, services, management practices, organisational models and/or institutional arrangements) is a key requirement for achieving development impact at scale. Impact never arises from an isolated innovation or change, but involves the uptake of multiple interdependent changes across different actors, levels and spheres, including the private sector. Thus, research for development programmes need to engage with multiple scaling processes and partners simultaneously, and consider both the ‘up-scaling’ of novel technologies, practices and arrangements, as well as the ‘down-scaling’ of the currently dominant ones.
