(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow – Computational
Candidate with expertise in either python or R or encouraged to apply. Experience in C++ or matlab would be relevant. Wet-lab expertise should include mouse modeling, flow cytometry, genomics or synthetic biology. Individuals with a recent PhD or MD/PhD and a strong track record of research as evidenced by publications; excellent written and verbal communication; strong attention to detail, multi-tasking; and a willingness to learn new technologies are encouraged to apply.
Two postdoctoral researcher positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Xiaolu Yang at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The Yang lab studies cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Our current projects focus on two broad areas: (1) The tumor suppressor p53, metabolism, and autophagy. We are interested in the regulation and functions of the preeminent tumor suppressor p53. Our results have revealed a role for p53 in modulating metabolic pathways that are critical for biosynthesis and redox balance. We are investigating the function of p53 as both a sentinel and a regulator for metabolic activities. We are also identifying and characterizing metabolic alterations that drive tumor initiation and progression. A recent extension of this research area is to define the role of metabolism and autophagy in stem cells, including embryonic stem cells and cancer stem cells. (2) Protein quality control, aging, and neurodegeneration. Our lab recently identified two protein quality control (PQC) systems, which consist of tripartite motif (TRIM) proteins and poly-Asp/Glu (polyD/E) proteins, respectively. Unlike canonical PQC systems, these new systems are independent of ATP and are unique for animals (the TRIM system) or eukaryotes (the polyD/E system). Both systems are multifunctional and highly effective. We are investigating their mechanisms of action; their roles in aging and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; and their utility in treating these diseases.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral fellow or research associate
Postdoctoral and research associate positions are available immediately to develop novel cancer immunotherapy, i.e. chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-expressing T cells, to eradicate human neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and gastrointestinal cancers as well as acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and investigate the unique molecular mechanisms on how CAR constructs, including the binders and the signaling domains, improve the T cell antitumor activity to eliminate solid tumors.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Tumor Virology and Cancer Immunotherapy
A Postdoctoral Researcher position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Jianxin You at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. The laboratory investigates how the molecular interplay between oncogenic viruses and their host cells leads to cancer (Cell 117:349-360, Cell Host Microbe 19:775-87). We are also developing nanotechnology-based immunotherapy for eliciting antiviral and antitumor immunity against human cancers induced by tumor viruses (Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2020;117:13730-13739). We are seeking enthusiastic and highly motivated Postdoctoral fellows to join our effort in building innovative therapeutic strategies for blocking oncogenic viral infection and associated tumorigenesis.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral fellowship in human immunology and bioinformatics
A postdoctoral position in human immunology and/or bioinformatics is available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Michael R. Betts at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Our group studies human immunology in the context of various human diseases including HIV, SIV, type I diabetes, and others. With our unique access to human samples, we are using high-parameter flow cytometry and next-generation techniques at single-cell resolution to parse through cellular heterogeneity and understand the roles of various rare cell populations in their contribution to human disease. The successful candidate will work on developing computational pipelines in the context of human immunology and viral infection, as well as working with other members in the group to analyze high dimensional data generated in the lab from various projects. These may include but are not limited to experiments that include high-parameter (25+ color) flow cytometry, single-cell CITEseq, single-cell ATACseq, and additional genomic profiling methods. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral Fellowship in Cancer Genetics
The Nathanson laboratory invites applications for Post-Doctoral positions at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. We focus on cutting-edge translational research in cancer genetics, both in the inherited and somatic genetics of cancer (example publications include Hu et al., NEJM 2021; Maxwell et al., JCO Pres Onc, 2020; Kraya et al., Clin Cancer Res 2019). Expertise and interest in both wet bench studies and bioinformatics is preferred, however applicants with only expertise in bioinformatics would be welcome. The laboratory is highly collaborative and investigates several cancers, among which are hereditary breast cancer (due to BRCA1/2 and non-BRCA1/2 mutations), melanoma, testicular germ cell tumors, and neuroendocrine tumors. Applications for postdoctoral positions are invited across all areas of research, all of which are funded by multiple NIH grants and foundation funding. Potential projects include research to identify novel susceptibility variants through whole exome sequencing in men with testicular germ cell tumors, on the inherited and somatic genetics of breast cancer, including identification of novel susceptibility genes, characterization of moderate penetrance genes, and somatic studies of breast and other cancers in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers (with bulk and single cell RNA/DNA sequencing, and immunophenotyping), with the opportunity to perform correlative studies in relationship to therapeutic response, both targeted and immunotherapies. Further, we have access to the Penn Medicine Biobank with over 45K individuals with whole exome sequencing available for multiple genetic studies in cancer. The laboratory is located with the Institute for Immunology at Penn, and there are multiple opportunities for local collaboration. Applicants also will have the opportunity to engage in collaborative efforts at the national and international stage.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doctoral Researcher
The Volk laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral position in our comparative breast cancer program at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. The goals of our laboratory are to understand regulatory mechanisms governing dynamic interactions between cells and their surrounding extracellular matrix in the wound healing-fibrosis-cancer progression triad and to apply this knowledge to develop innovative regenerative and oncologic therapies for veterinary and human patients. One-year positions are available immediately with the option to extend an additional 1-3 years. Using a combination of in vitro and mouse models, as well as human, feline and canine breast cancer biopsy samples, we have initiated multiple lines of investigation that will provide insight into how regulation of the collagen fibrillar matrix and its components, specifically type III collagen, inhibits formation of a tumor-permissive microenvironment. This project capitalizes on our studies using spontaneous naturally occurring large animal models of mammary tumors. Future work will characterize drivers of tumor-permissive and suppressive collagen signatures and investigate the use of a novel tissue engineering strategy to control tumor growth and metastasis following tumor resection to improve clinical outcome in veterinary and human breast cancer patients.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellowship in Vision Science
The Uyhazi and Bennett laboratories at the University of Pennsylvania are seeking a motivated postdoctoral fellow to join our team to investigate gene therapy and cell-based therapies for vision loss. Our goal is to use cutting-edge technology focused on photoreceptor regeneration to better understand the cellular and molecular biology of retinal degeneration and to develop novel therapies for blinding diseases. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D., M.D., or both with experience in genetic mouse models, molecular biology, immunofluorescence staining, and microscopy. Additional experience in single cell data analysis, iPSC culture, and visual function testing is an asset. Candidates should be willing to work in a team environment that is enthusiastic, collaborative, and supportive.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Genomics
A post-doctoral position in human genetics and genomics is immediately available. Research in our group focuses on the development of genomics and bioinformatics methods to analyze sequencing data, and to enable the implementation of genomic medicine in clinical settings. The successful candidate will work on developing novel genomic methods to study human diseases that are related to genomic repeats. Example projects include the use of Illumina sequencing, optical mapping or long-read sequencing to assay human genomes, transcriptomes and epigenomes from patients with undiagnosed diseases, and to understand how repetitive elements and structural variants in complex genomic regions cause human diseases. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Spatial Omics
We are looking for an exceptionally creative and self-motivated postdoctoral fellow to join us in developing new technologies for spatial omics profiling at the cellular level. The successful candidate will collaborate with internal and external groups to solve challenging biological problems. The work will be multi-disciplinary, combining microchip, microscopy, genomics, and computational analysis to profile genome, epigenome, transcriptome, and proteome within the spatial context of tissues and cells. These novel technologies will greatly improve our ability to study tissue complexity and reveal the salient features of tissue architecture in physiology and disease.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in genomics of neurodegenerative diseases
A postdoctoral position is immediately available in the laboratory of Dr. Alessandra Chesi at the University of Pennsylvania with a focus on discovering and functionally characterizing novel genes for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases in human brain relevant cell types. Dr. Chesi has a long-standing interest in genomics and neurodegenerative diseases; she has developed Capture C based approaches to map GWAS signals to their effector genes (see some examples in linked publications) and is applying them to brain-related disorders. Main areas of research in our lab are 3D genomics and epigenomics techniques (such as Hi-C, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq and RNA-seq), CRISPR/Cas9 editing, pooled CRISPRi/a screens with scRNA-seq readout, plus development of iPSC-based models for neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental diseases (2D neuronal/glial differentiation, co-cultures, 3D brain organoids).
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology
A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute. The successful candidate will be dedicated and motivated, have creative thinking skills and be a driver of her/his research. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a group of experts on computational genomics to improve algorithms and develop software tools for the long-read sequencing techniques. These technologies, such as Oxford Nanopore and Pacific BioSciences, have significant advantages over conventional short-read Illumina sequencing technologies. We are developing various deep neural network approaches to handle unique challenges in long-read sequencing data, to facilitate novel genetic discoveries and accelerate the implementation of precision medicine.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow
The Wilson laboratory in the Division of Diagnostic Innovation in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Penn is hiring a postdoctoral fellow to work on an established project focused on single cell and spatial analysis of human diabetic kidney disease. This position involves both dry lab and wet lab responsibilities and will consider applicants with experience in either area. The fellow will conduct single cell analysis of human donor specimens from patients with diabetic kidney disease under the supervision of Dr. Wilson. We have already sequenced a large number of single cell libraries in collaboration with Novo Nordisk and preprocessed our dataset for downstream analysis. We are looking for a motivated individual who can work together with our research team to complete any necessary validation studies and move this project to publication. Prior coding experience is not required and the position can be tailored to the applicant skillset. Applicants with bioinformatics experience may be interested in single cell or spatial analysis techniques whereas applicants with molecular biology experience could focus on assay development and cell culture models of diabetic kidney injury.
