PhD position summary/title: PhD ‘Improving health through choice: choice-driven behavioural interventions
In this PhD project, we investigate the potential benefits and limitations of choice-driven personalization, meaning that individuals themselves are involved in designing and/or selecting the type of intervention they receive directly. Rather than relying heavily on data and algorithms, choice-driven personalization enables individuals to autonomously design and/or select (into) interventions that fit them. Existing work has shown that choice-driven personalization may be promising in specific contexts (e.g., for different types of financial incentives), but it remains unclear who benefits from getting to choose in behavioural interventions and who doesn’t (or perhaps is even disadvantaged by it).

PhD position summary/title: PhD ‘Politics at the Bedside’
In this doctoral research project, you will focus on the daily considerations and choices made by healthcare providers in the context of scarcity; choices they make on a daily basis, and which may seem run of the mill, but do have major consequences for the quality, continuity and accessibility of healthcare. You will identify and make visible the (fundamental) political dimensions that are inherent in these daily practices on the work floor. For instance, how do healthcare providers weigh the needs of patients and engage in priority setting when it comes to dividing their time attentions and resources? What kinds of new dependencies arise between patients, healthcare providers and informal care providers in such contexts? How does precariousness manifest in these (new) relationships of dependency, what kinds of differences are likely to arise between various groups of patients, and what are the consequences of these differences? What, moreover, qualifies as good professional conduct in times of scarcity, and what kinds of new remuneration and accountability regimes are required to support and/or safeguard such professional conduct?

PhD position summary/title: PhD Structural vulnerabilities in access to healthcare and support services
In this research project, we will look at what happens to people who need long-term care and support, who live at home and depend on an ever-changing and precarious configuration of professional and informal care providers for their healthcare and support. Some of these people actively avoid care, but not all of them do. More likely, many people in this group do want to gain access to long-term healthcare and support, but only have limited access due to various circumstances. How do these people feel about the new dependencies created by these types of precarious care arrangements? What does this mean for our broad prosperity, which, in addition to income, involves things like health status, quality of life, social relationships, safety and physical environment? And how do traditional structures of inequality (e.g. gender, ethnicity, socio-economic class) interfere with people’s access to healthcare and support services?

PhD position summary/title: Diversity in leadership positions and DEI policies
The PhD student will work in a team of researchers on large project that includes a threefold approach to study DEI policies in firms in the Netherlands. First, the team plans to document the link between diversity in leadership positions and the types of DEI policies implemented by firms in the Netherlands. We are particularly interested in studying heterogeneity across firms, using administrative data from the Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) and survey data of human resources managers in firms. Second, we plan to examine firms’ and employees’ attitudes towards DEI policies in the Netherlands using survey experiments. Gaining a better understanding of these attitudes can help design more effective policies to increase the representation of women and minorities in leadership positions. Third, we propose to use the findings of the first two approaches to inform the design of DEI policies and test the effectiveness of these policies by conducting field experiments within organizations. This threefold approach will yield much-needed credible evidence on how to improve representation of women and minorities in leadership positions.
