PhD position summary/title: PhD Position – System-level integrated circuit design and modeling for scalable quantum computing architectures
We are working on scalable electronic architectures based on semiconductor spin quantum bits (qubits) to make the vision of a universal quantum computer reality. For scaling up the number of qubits into the millions, it is crucial to move parts of the control electronics closer to the qubits. To achieve this, we design and implement cryogenic integrated circuits for qubit control and readout in state-of-the-art CMOS technologies. Since qubits are extremely sensitive and operate in temperatures at low millikelvin levels, the requirements on power consumption, noise and area are severe. For this reason, it is necessary to develop new and groundbreaking architectures and circuit topologies.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position – Replacing lost material flows within the energy transition
The energy transition not only generates new demand for materials, but also phase out material flows such as gypsum production in coal-fired power plants. These lost material flows must be suitably replaced. To ensure that this replacement is compatible with the energy transition, substitution options must be systematically investigated with the help of energy scenarios. Therefore, this doctoral thesis will identify the phased out material flows and substitution options and integrate them into the institute`s own energy system model ETHOS.FINE ( https://github.com/FZJ-IEK3-VSA/FINE ) in order to find transformation scenarios without material gaps.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position – Innovative Pathways for Grid Resilience: Flexibility and Volatility Analysis in Electrical Distribution Grids
In order to address the challenges associated with climate change, it is necessary to understand and design future distribution networks as we transition to sustainable energy sources. Moreover, the flexibility of decentralized energy sources, coupled with the increasing emphasis on incorporating self-sufficiency in buildings and energy-intensive technologies, has significant implications on distribution grids. Moreover, these changes would impact the reliability of the distribution grids and introduce challenges in resolving issues associated with the volatility of grid development and reinforcement. Thus, the objective of this doctoral thesis is to analyze the adaptability and instability in strengthening distribution grids by using geo-referenced synthetic distribution grids. Here, you will analyze the performance of distribution grids in different scenarios and configurations towards achieving greenhouse gas neutrality. To achieve this, you will perform the following tasks:
- Conduct comprehensive study on the flexibility of electrical distribution grids, evaluating various scenarios and their impacts
- Design and further develop geo-referenced synthetic distribution grids generation tool
- Design and implement different model configurations to simulate various grid configurations and assess their performance
- Investigate and apply optimization methods to improve grid resilience and flexibility
- Apply advanced data analytical techniques to analyze simulation findings and draw significant insights
- Determine cost-effective methods for grid reinforcement through performance evaluations
- Present research findings at conferences, publish articles in high-impact journals, and actively contribute to the wider scientific community

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position – Characterization of Metallic Lithium as Anode Material by in-situ Scanning Probe Microscopy
Metallic Lithium is considered as a future anode material in Lithium-Ion-Batteries because of its high energy density. Currently, challenges include an exact understanding of the dendrite formation origin and how this could be prevented. Furthermore, the mechanical behavior and the influence of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on metallic lithium, even under protective atmosphere, are not sufficiently understood. As part of your doctoral research, you will optimize the design of interfaces on metallic lithium in a systematic approach of spatially resolved mapping of properties based on atomic force microscopy. The project is embedded in a larger German-American consortium.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position – Probing Magnetism of Topological Quantum Materials using Scattering Techniques
Topological quantum materials have attracted enormous attention since their discovery due to the observed anomalous transport properties originating from the non-zero Berry curvature. A large, antiferromagnetically-induced anomalous Hall effect is a potentially valuable discovery for memory applications. In this PhD project, we would like to explore new topological quantum materials using neutron scattering techniques combined with in-house characterizations.
Since magnetic symmetry and topological properties are intimately connected, the determination of magnetic structure via neutron powder diffraction is an essential part of the PhD project.
