PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Code-Based Cryptography
Are you fascinated by the theoretical underpinnings of security that allow for protecting privacy in an ever more interconnected world? Are you willing to take on the challenge of upgrading cryptography to deal with the threat posed by quantum computation? Do you enjoy working in a team of young and motivated researchers? We are seeking a PhD student to carry out cutting-edge research in theoretical computer science, with an expected focus on code-based cryptography. Cryptography’s task is to provide tools for maintaining the privacy and integrity of digital data. Unfortunately, almost all currently deployed public-key cryptography is known to be vulnerable if an attacker has access to a quantum computer. Given the near-term deployment of quantum computing technologies, the time to deploy post-quantum secure cryptography is now. Code-based cryptography not only offers plausible security against quantum attacks; it also leads to practically efficient implementations of powerful cryptography such as secure multiparty computation and (non-)interactive proofs. However, our theory of its security is severely wanting. Firstly, unlike its close cousin of lattice-based cryptography, we lack a satisfactory theory of security reductions. Secondly, many recent proposals lack sufficient cryptanalysis. The aim of this PhD project is to fill in these holes and thereby offer a better foundation for the security of code-based cryptography.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student: Attitudes and Behavioural Change Towards Sustainable Health Care
Dutch healthcare accounts for 6-8% of the national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Surgery is considered a major source of hospital-induced environmental pollution as the operating room (OR) produces 20-33% of total hospital waste. The three largest contributors are anaesthetics, use of instruments and energy required for air treatment (heating, ventilation and air conditioning [HVAC] systems). Additionally, two tons of pharmaceutical residues are found yearly in Dutch water. Hospitals contribute significantly, as only few remove pharmaceuticals before discharging wastewater.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Femtosecond study of molecular cages and photocatalytic water splitting
Molecular cages are self-organizing supramolecular systems that act as molecular sieves, allowing specific molecules/ions to enter the cage while blocking most other molecules and ions. This selectivity is of crucial importance in catalysis. Up to now, the molecular-scale structure and dynamics of molecular cages are not well understood. For instance, there are indications that these cages can contain highly organized water molecules that may play an important role in the selectivity of the molecular cage, for instance in the binding of the molecule/ion that enters the cage. In this project you will study the structural dynamics of molecular cages using femtosecond two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy, probing the vibrations of the organic molecules and water molecules constituting the cage. In addition, you will study the dynamics of the cage following excitation of a photo-active molecule connected or embedded in the cage, using femtosecond visible/UV pump – infrared probe spectroscopy. These photo-active molecules will include photosensitizers and photocatalystst, for instance hydrogenase catalysts that reduce protons to hydrogen gas. At present several examples of hydrogenases exist, but they are quite unstable and their efficiency is low. We will investigate to which extent the embedding of a hydrogenase photocatalyst in a molecular cage can lead to stabilization (protection) of the photocatalyst and to an increase of the efficiency of hydrogen generation. In this project we will collaborate with the groups of Prof. dr. J. Reek and Prof. dr. S. Woutersen of the University of Amsterdam.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Luminescence Cooling of Nanomaterials
Nonlinear luminescence of nanocrystals and relevant applications have attracted more and more attention. In order to make it effective for local environmental response to nanoparticle photoactivation, optimization of the nanostructures and the luminescence are required. Previous work by our research group has shown that (non)linear luminescence and associated dynamics can be tailored by structure, composition, and dopants. The project aims to optimize the solar-induced luminescence of nanoparticles and realize its influence on the local environment of nanoparticles. The project is an active collaboration with industry. PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Molecular Laser Spectroscopy
Are you eager to apply advanced laser spectroscopies to develop the next generation of photothermal materials for applications such as sunscreen filters and molecular heaters? Do you enjoy to get the most out of the equipment you’re working with? Then this is the job for you! Light-to-heat conversion materials generate great interest due to their widespread applications. Amongst these is photoprotection against the harmful effects of UV radiation, which is presently attracting increasing attention because of concerns regarding adverse health and environmental effects of currently used sunscreen filters. Closely related to such materials are molecular heaters that employ heat -the ‘by-product’ produced by photon absorption- to enhance growth in agri- and horticulture. As yet, mainly empirical, brute-force approaches have been applied to develop new materials. We have shown that a bottom-up approach in which a full and detailed understanding of the photophysics and photochemistry of promising leads is obtained by molecular laser spectroscopy, enables the rational development and tailoring of such materials.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position on Emergent Transitions in Non-equilibrium Dynamical Systems
Are you a highly motivated student with a strong interest in understanding the nature of emergent transitions in non-equilibrium dynamical systems? We are seeking an excellent and ambitious PhD candidate to carry out theoretical interdisciplinary research to understand emergent transitions in a broad class of non-equilibrium systems, especially active and externally driven systems. Despite encouraging theoretical advances in non-equilibrium statistical physics, understanding emergent transitions in non-equilibrium dynamical systems remains challenging due to lack of a general statistical thermodynamic framework. Particularly, for active systems driven by local injection of energy, the dynamics and mechanisms of transitions proceeding via rare fluctuations is poorly understood. Here, we propose an interdisciplinary research project which aims at developing a general theoretical framework to address the emergence and the sensitivity of transitions between non-equilibrium steady states in driven systems. To achieve this goal, we will extend the tools of stochastic thermodynamics and large deviation theory to non-equilibrium dynamical systems. Thus, the project will involve an exciting combination of concepts and techniques from mathematics, statistical physics and theoretical chemistry.

We are looking for a PhD candidate to join a new research project led by Dr. Priska Breves (PI), Prof. dr. Edith Smit, and Dr. Eva van Reijmersdal: “Genuinely green or misleading mirage? The occurrence and impact of greenwashed claims by social media greenfluencers”. The project is embedded in the Amsterdam School of Communication Research at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, University of Amsterdam. This 4-year PhD project aims to uncover the prevalence of greenwashing among greenfluencers (i.e., influencers who are known for their commitment to sustainability), understand followers’ susceptibility to greenfluencers’ claims, and develop and test an intervention strategy to help consumers resist greenwashing more effectively. The PhD project will focus on three research areas: (1) exploring the occurrence of greenwashing done by greenfluencers, (2) gaining insights into the susceptibility of followers to these claims using theories on parasocial experiences, and (3) developing and validating an intervention strategy. A multi-method approach including content analysis and experimental research will be used to investigate these questions. The project will both have scientific and societal impact, with outreach to interested stakeholders within and outside academia to disseminate the research conclusions. The PhD candidate is expected to also contribute to such outreach activities.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Nanophotonics with 2D Quantum Materials
Are you a highly motivated physicist interested in a PhD project at the intersection between nanophotonics and 2D material science? The 2D Nanophotonics group within the Institute of Physics has an open position for the project “Excitonic 2D metasurfaces for active multifunctional flat optics”. The aim is to employ exciton resonances in monolayer 2D semiconductors to actively tune the optical response of metasurfaces. Optical metasurfaces offer ultra-flat and compact alternatives to conventional bulky optical elements like mirrors, lenses, and prisms. By accurate engineering of the resonant light-matter interaction of arrays of nanostructures, light can be scattered in a controlled fashion to perform an optical function. While such optical metasurfaces are nowadays highly efficient and well established, their optical function is typically static. In this project you will study the strong light-matter interactions of stable excitons in monolayer 2D semiconductor material and couple these materials to resonant metasurfaces. Using their combination, you will investigate the unique properties of these 2D quantum materials and use them to develop multifunctional and atomically thin optical elements with an electrically tunable optical function.
