(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Coral Reef Health Assessment

The Great Reef Census (greatreefcensus.org) is a collaborative venture involving the University of Queensland, James Cook University, Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef, AIMS, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, and Dell Corporation. It engages citizens in the collection and interpretation of reconnaissance data on reef state, which are used to identify ecologically-important reefs that stimulate widespread recovery after major coral bleaching. An exciting opportunity now exists to develop a broader scientific framework for linking field data to coral reef decision-making. This research position will (1) collaborate with Dell Corporation on the integration of artificial intelligence with human visual interpretation to maximise the quality of data, and (2) work closely with GBRMPA in developing a quantitative framework that maximises the value of data acquisition for a variety of decisions (i.e., selecting sites where reef state would be difficult to predict from secondary data and yet clarification of state will likely affect decisions). The researcher will be based in Brisbane and work closely with partners in Cairns as well as explore partnerships in Western Australia. The project is funded by the NESP Marine Hub. This is a great opportunity to bridge marine ecology and decision-making and develop close links with reef managers.
