PhD position summary/title: PhD in Virtual Reality as Empathy Machine: Validation Research on Humanitarian Communication (1.0 FTE)
Virtual Reality is a booming industry and is considered to be a game changer. So far it has mostly been used for entertainment and to give a sense of extraordinary experiences. However, it has also been used effectively in the military field to enhance training and simulate risk situations, in the health sector to practice surgical interventions as well as to treat mental disorders and addictions and to aid rehabilitation, in the realms of education, museums, sport, HR, architecture and for climate awareness. In the last decade Virtual Reality has also been increasingly used to think about minority and diversity politics, by making the viewer experience what it is like to face racial prejudice or survive a perilous migration journey. For these reasons VR is widely acclaimed in the humanitarian sector. Would you like to help critically investigate the role of VR for humanitarian appeals by asking how and to what extent humanitarian VR can function as an empathy machine, bridging the distance between viewers and mediated others? Then you have a role to play as a PhD researcher within this broader research project.

PhD position summary/title: PhD on Roots and Routes to Migrants’ Economic Participation in the Netherlands (1970-2021) (1.0 FTE)
We are seeking a candidate for a PhD project titled “Roots and routes to migrants’ economic participation in the Netherlands: the constraining and facilitating impact of home and host society contexts (1970-2021).” This project utilizes a historical approach to investigate how migrants’ home and host society contexts and their interplay have facilitated or hampered the sustainable economic participation of different groups of African migrants in the Netherlands. We focus on two specific groups: Somali refugees, who have widely struggled in the Netherlands, and Ghanian economic migrants, who have experienced greater success. By “economic participation” we mean both labour market participation as well as self-employment. Economic participation is sustainable if (self-)employment is long term and income is sufficient to cover living costs (i.e., the opposite of precarious work). For more information, see the detailed project description.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Colloidal Synthesis of Nanoscale Optics (1.0 FTE)
Optical (nano)technologies form a growing area that will play an important role in our future, empowering fields like optical circuitry, quantum computing, ultra-sensitive sensing, and light harvesting. The ability to deliver optical energy as efficiently as possible will be crucial to apply such technologies outside the lab. The research of Dr. Marlous Kamp focusses on using colloidal synthesis to develop micron- and nanoscale lenses that control the optical pathways out of/into nano-optical devices, optimising their performance. For example, simple colloidal spheres can already focus light below the diffraction limit, allowing for nanoscale optical energy delivery. This strategy routines achieves great amplification of signals captured from light-emitting molecules, allowing new optical phenomena to be observed such as the dynamics and reaction kinetics of even single molecules. Ultimately, such colloidal lenses will facilitate the miniaturisation of devices by eliminating the need to incorporate bulky optical components. To achieve this goal, both established and new colloidal synthesis strategies are used to design and produce such novel colloidal/nanostructures, in conjunction with advanced optical and electron microscope characterisation techniques and supported by theoretical modelling.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in RNA chemical biology (1.0 FTE)
Ribonucleic acid (RNA) performs many important biological functions. We design new photochemical reactions to label it, and we are doing it in the smallest, but the most complex reaction vessel – cells. Why do we do this? Because we want to investigate where in the cell certain RNAs are located, what structures they fold into, and what their partners are. All these factors govern how an RNA execute its functions in a cell. Our ambition is to run the reactions just for once, but get to know the answers to the above questions for hundreds or thousands of RNAs in one goal! Next-Gen sequencing technology will help us get there. These fundamental understandings of how RNA functions will ultimately lead to the development of novel therapeutics.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position (4 years, 1.0 FTE) or Postdoc Position (3 years, 1.0 FTE)
The research programme in classical studies ‘Anchoring Innovation’ studies the way in which ‘the new’ is made acceptable and understandable to relevant social groups in a process of ‘anchoring’. The new is frequently anchored in ‘cu24 April 2023ltural common ground’. In this work package of the Anchoring Innovation research programme, we study how the notion of cultural common ground (as opposed to personal common ground) can help explain different aspects of the coming-into-being of the Roman empire. The overarching issue for this WP, then, is precisely the role of cultural common ground as an anchor for self-understanding and identity-formation.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position Improving dairy goat udder health (1.0 FTE)
Udder health is of great importance for producing high quality milk, but also for efficient and sustainable milk production and strongly impacts animal welfare. Therefore, the Dutch dairy goat industry aims to improve udder health. In this project, several studies will be performed to better understand within-farm transmission dynamics of mastitis pathogens and to develop tools to monitor udder health in dairy goats. This, in combination with existing knowledge, will be turned into a practical udder health control tool which can be used by advisors to coach farmers to understand the mastitis problem on their farm and to take effective measures for improving udder health. The effects of this tool will be tested in a controlled field trial.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in financing the strategic transformation of incumbent business models (0.8 – 1.0 FTE)
Sustainability transitions require incumbent firms in many sectors to fundamentally transform their business models. While ample research addresses novel, sustainable business models for firms, we do not yet understand how incumbent firms deal with the complex dynamics of phase-out decisions while at the same time pushing organizational renewal and innovation. In addition, it remains unclear how financial institutions can adequately support these firms in the strategic transformation of their business models.
