PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Molecular Regulation and 3D Cell Organization
The PhD project is focused on the investigation of skeletal joint and ligament development in the zebrafish model. Joints and ligaments are essential for the integrity and movement of our skeleton. During embryological development the formation of the joint starts with the interzone, which, together with the surrounding tissue, forms all components of the adult joint, including the ligaments. Molecular markers of the early interzone formation are associated with congenital and age- related joint diseases.
PhD student will compare three models of zebrafish joint development: 1. – disrupted joint development resulting in joint loss, 2.- delayed joint development, which is later recovered; and 3.- normal joint development. The heterogeneity in the joint interzone cell layers will be investigated by combining single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial analysis of interzone cells. The key differences will be further identified between these three models for 3D cell organization, 3D morphology, and subcellular structures by using genetically-tagged enzymes in combination with X-ray synchrotron microtomography and advanced electron microscopy imaging. This project will generate new ground-breaking discoveries of the cellular and molecular mechanisms during normal and altered joint and ligament development that have important biomedical implications.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computer Systems: memory management in architecture and OS
The virtual memory system is the backbone of memory management in computers and operating systems, and has evolved to efficiently support memory protection and isolation in cloud environments (i.e., containers and virtualization). However, the growth in physical memory (DRAM) has not kept up with the explosive growth of data sets. This results in part of data sets to be stored off the DRAM and on comparatively slower but larger memory/disk. Recent developments in high bandwidth SSD storages make them appealing due to their highly parallel capabilities. We will strive to design systems that support larger data sets while minimizing performance loss due to the use of slower media. The PhD student will start off with an initial project on memory management in architectures and the OS. This project will address the gap between data set sizes and memory size, using techniques that range from SW approaches, such as using the virtual memory system of the operating system, to fully HW approaches, such as CXL like systems. This project will work on understanding the fundamental problems in building such systems and designing architectural and operating system solutions to help bridge the ever-growing gap between the size of data and memory. We will implement and evaluate the proposed designs in architectural simulators (e.g. gem5), and implement the operating system features on the Linux kernel.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Automatic Control focusing on distributed voltage control
In order to address climate and security challenges, new technology is used that changes the dynamics of the electric power system. However, the adoption of new technology, in combination with legacy mechanisms, often leads to unpredictable system behavior. Active distribution networks are one such example where new inverter-based technology is currently being adopted to support voltage regulation in local distribution systems, and also to assist with voltage regulation in the overhead power transmission system. Unfortunately, the adoption of distributed inverter-based voltage regulators can lead to harmful interactions between voltage regulators at different levels and locations that can compromise system security.
The project focuses on modeling and characterizing the adverse interactions between distributed voltage controllers, as well as developing new voltage regulation strategies in active distribution networks that mitigate the risks of harmful interactions.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: New environmentally friendly electric motors for sustainable electrification
Dependency on rare earth metals is a challenge for future electrification as rare earth metals are considered critical raw materials. The aim of this project is to reduce the use of rare earth metals through the substitution to new magnets without, or with less, rare earth metals. The new magnets will be both weaker and easier to demagnetize than conventional magnets and therefore new simulation models need to be developed for the unique magnets, and implemented in simulation software for electric motor design. The new models will be more advanced than existing models and adapted for the new magnets and will therefore model the magnets more accurately. Furthermore, new innovative motor types must be developed that are adapted to the new magnets. Finally, an electric motor for electromobility will be designed, built and tested with the new magnets, thus demonstrating that the new magnets can substitute conventional rare earth magnets. Both the new magnets and the electric motor must be designed so that the magnets can be recycled to further contribute to sustainable electrification.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student on emerging CT technology in proton therapy
A PhD student position at the Medical Physics group at Uppsala University, Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology is available for a highly motivated individual with interest in radiation therapy in general and proton radiotherapy in particular. In our research we aim at developing and validating general quantitative imaging methods to reduce the proton range uncertainty, which can be leveraged to achieve better patient outcomes by using the present (DECT) and emerging state-of-the-art (PCCT) in CT imaging. The focus of the PhD project will be on assessing the clinical impact of improved tissue characterization and proton range definition, specifically in terms of reduction of high dose volumes in organs at risk. To achieve this objective we will first, via comprehensive retrospective studies, generate descriptive statistics of the potential impact of reducing proton range uncertainty based on treatments performed at the Skandion Clinic. This will be followed by dose recalculation with introduction of artificial range errors as well as prospective studies investigating the potential of emerging imaging methods to decrease uncertainties impacting upon the treatment planning process. In this project the successful applicant will be collaborating with four other PhD students at Umeå University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, as well as experts in radiation oncology, medical physics, radiology, computed tomography technology and deep learning.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (Phd) position in Solid State Physics, with focus on the synthesis and study of next-generation sustainable magnets
The most powerful permanent magnets are based on rare earth metals, which are classified as both rare and strategic, meaning both scarcity and high price. In this project, we develop durable magnets using new synthesis methods and establish their utility through detailed magnetic measurements. The synthesis includes nanocomposites and metal alloys free from, or with a very small content of, rare earth metals. One goal of the project is to experimentally realize new alloys and compounds that, from calculations, are predicted to have high performance as permanent magnets.
Sweden has some of Europe’s largest ore deposits of rare earth metals with potential for mining. This project includes magnetically characterizing samples found in geological surveys to discern natural ore compositions that could be used for the synthesis of new rare earth magnets, thereby bypassing or reducing the number of steps for separation of the useful chemical elements.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website
Uppsala University is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.
The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.
Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.
Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
