PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Chemistry – Specializing in Molecular Biomimetics

The research project is part of an EU funded network (PhotoSynH2), which aims at developing novel methods for the production of green H2 as a solar fuel. The hydrogenase enzymes are key components in any such technology, as these are central to H2 metabolism and catalyze the formation and oxidation of H2 gas. To realize their biotechnological potential, we need highly efficient hydrogenase enzymes that are well integrated into the metabolic pathways of technologically relevant host organisms. The project will address this challenge via characterization of novel examples of this diverse enzyme family, followed by their optimization via rationale design to ensure stable and high H2 productivity in photobioreactors.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Economic History, within Uppsala University’s graduate programme in medical humanities

Laboratories of the future? Complex buildings, flexible organizations and the research and education of life science. While research and education within the field of biomedicine are constantly evolving, they must be housed in capital-intensive, permanent physical infrastructure. Beginning in the latter part of the 20th century, notions of ‘flexible buildings’ have therefore developed alongside new ideals of ‘flexible organizations’. The purpose of this PhD project is to investigate the historical development, and consequences of, this dynamic relationship: between the ways in which biomedical research and education have been organised, and the physical environments constructed and adapted for such pursuits. It is proposed that the focus of such a study would consist of analysing the planning, funding, adaptations and uses of the laboratory facilities at Uppsala Biomedical Centre (1966-). Applicants should thus have an interest in studying the relationship between life science research/education and its material conditions (economic and physical resources), and in historicizing this dynamic relationship from an STS-perspective.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in antibiotic resistance

Thomas Tängdén’s research group conducts in vitro studies on antibiotics and resistant bacteria. The purpose of the planned project is to find antibiotic combinations that are effective against multidrug-resistant bacteria and can suppress emergence of resistance. Also, we will investigate how antibiotic dosing can be optimized. In the studies, we use clinical isolates as well as laboratory strains in which we have modified the setup of genes encoding enzymatic resistance and impermeability (porin loss). The effect of antibiotics is investigated by MIC-testing, static and dynamic time-kill experiments and automated time-lapse microscopy with subsequent image analysis. The project also includes handling and analysis of whole-genome sequencing data.

This position is one of five doctoral positions in Uppsala University’s graduate school in medical humanities. Medical humanities is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of medicine, pharmacy, humanities, art/literature and social sciences. It tackles issues such as the individual’s experience of illness, the development of biomedical research and medical practices, and political perspectives on health care from different methodological and theoretical perspectives. Thus, the medical humanities create added value for biomedicine and healthcare by highlighting the social and cultural aspects of health and disease, and for the humanities and social sciences through a broader thematic approach to contemporary health-related societal challenges.

(15) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in medical cell biology specialized in advanced microscopy and image analysis

The Department of Medical Cell Biology belongs to the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy and is an important part of the recently launched interdisciplinary Uppsala Diabetes Centre (UDC). The Department has a long tradition of successful research into both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Research in medical cell biology includes e.g. cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling the release of blood glucose-regulating hormones with the overarching goal to understand the mechanisms behind the defective hormone secretion patterns in diabetes. Insulin and glucagon from beta and alpha cells in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans are hormones with a direct impact on whole-body glucose homeostasis whereas somatostatin from delta cells exerts indirect effects on the other cell types in the islets. There are gaps in the understanding how hormone secretion is regulated by inter- and intracellular communication. In many cases, important signalling processes take place in restricted subcellular compartments, such as the primary cilium or in the sub-plasma membrane space. Clarification of the structure and function of such subcellular domains requires high-resolution imaging of living cells. Different techniques have been developed for super-resolution microscopy but many of them do not offer enough acquisition speed or cannot be applied to living cells.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website

Uppsala University  is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.

The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.

Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.

Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
