Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Fellow in Functional Genomics group

A post-doctoral position is open in the lab of Dr. Michal Šmída (https://www.ceitec.eu/ceitec-mu/michal-smida-research-group/rg214) to participate in research focused on the identification of novel targets for therapy of leukemias, particularly acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The research group is investigating molecular mechanisms essential for malignant cells and/or responsible for developing resistance to current targeted therapies. More importantly, we explore how to exploit the resistance mechanisms for novel personalized therapy. We are seeking a talented person with expertise in cell biology, molecular biology and biochemistry to perform various large-scale drug screens and genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 cellular screens with following in-depth validation of the screening hits and detailed elucidation of molecular mechanisms. The aim of the project will be to propose novel molecular targets to break the therapy resistance and thereby enhance the success rate of the therapy in CLL or AML patients. The project will include translational research using immortalized cell lines, mouse models and primary patient material. State-of-the-art technologies such as genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 screening, next-generation sequencing or single-cell sequencing are available in the laboratory and/or local core facilities, and are accessible on a regular basis.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC POSITION in Primary Cilia Biology

We are seeking a talented and motivated candidate to join our team to pursue the mechanisms and functions of primary cilia. The primary cilium is an antenna-like organelle that has emerged as a fundamental regulator of embryonic development as well as tissue homeostasis. Consequently, the deregulation of its assembly, maintenance, or function leads to numerous human diseases, collectively termed ciliopathies. It has been estimated that cilia dysfunctions are responsible for as many as 100 human diseases. However, the mechanistic explanation of primary cilia assembly and function, crucial for the understanding of cilia-related defects and their therapeutic targeting, is insufficient.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC POSITION in Neuroelectrophysiology

Adequate excitability is a basic parameter determining the physiological activity of the nervous tissue. Increased and decreased neuronal excitability can thus have a significant impact on the function of the nervous tissue and is the basis of a number of neuropsychiatric diseases including epilepsy, schizophrenia, and neurodegenerative diseases. Our research group is working at the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University (Brno, Czech Republic; https://www.med.muni.cz/o-fakulte/organizacni-struktura/pracoviste/fyziologicky-ustav/vyzkumna-skupina-markety-bebarove) and is currently explicitly focused on the Alzheimer´s disease and epilepsy (including the role of miRNA in its pathogenesis). For the study of changes in neuronal excitability, functional analysis of various nerve tissue preparations will be performed (especially 2D neuronal cultures, patient-specific hiPSC-derived neuronal organoids, or human/rat brain slices, including those coming from the extirpated brain samples of patients during neurosurgical therapeutic interventions) using multielectrode array and whole cell patch clamp techniques.

(18) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in sociology / social anthropology / migration studies

Despite the global COVID-19 pandemic, Europe continues to be a major destination for transnational migrants, notably from Asia and Africa. The way in which this phenomenon has been unfolding underlines the urgent need to further conceptualise transnational migration by analysing the decision-making of aspiring (re)migrants. This scholarly enterprise is critically important as mainstream migration theories put more of a focus on broader social processes and dynamics, thereby overlooking the human aspects of migration. Basing itself on several migration theories in various disciplines, this proposal adopts a framework that humanises research on (non-)migration decision-making, i.e. highlighting its human aspects in three ways: engendering, decolonising and situating the analysis in temporal, psychological, relational and social contexts. As a case study, the AspirE research project will examine the decision-making of aspiring (re)migrants from selected Southeast and East Asian countries (China, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam) to and within selected EU member countries (Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Finland). These migrants are oriented towards the EU labour markets where they are concentrated in ethnic niches. Employing qualitative and participatory research methodologies, the study will map the extent to which spatial mobility policies at the EU and national levels take into account aspiring (re)migrants’ behaviour, identify the micro- and mesolevel drivers of (re)migration aspiration and/or intention and determine the temporality of aspiring (re)migrants’ decision-making. The results of this project will provide concrete information as to how individuals’ migration decisions change over time and on the specific stage at which mobility policies are more likely to play a role in shaping migration outcomes, which will enhance EU migration policies.
