PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in multi-modal AI for biomolecular engineering

Data-driven approaches to drug design, such as deep biomolecular generative models, have emerged as powerful strategies for engineering new molecules with desired properties and repurposing existing molecules for new tasks. As implied by the term “data-driven”, these methods require large amounts of data to make accurate predictions, ranging from structural and biochemical information about targets and ligands, to genomic and phenotypic data. Such data can be used to build computational models which improve our understanding of the complex relationships between molecular structure and biological function. By using machine learning, statistical modeling, and simulation, data-driven drug design can help identify new drug candidates, optimize leads, and predict drug efficacy and toxicity with greater accuracy and speed than with traditional rule-based methods.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Materials Physics

Lighting stands for 16.5% of the world’s electricity consumption. Novel and energy efficient lighting is therefore needed to reduce the impact on the environment originating from this enormous energy consumption. Phosphor-converted LEDs have become mainstream for many lighting applications, but commercially used LED phosphors contain rare-earth ions that belong to the EU critical raw materials, therefore, new lighting solutions are urgently needed. This PhD project focuses on the investigation of a novel class of phosphors, called hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites, which are free from rare-earch ions, with the overall aim to unravel relationships between local structure, dynamics, and optical properties in these materials. The project will involve the use of advanced neutron spectroscopy techniques at, e.g., the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source in U.K., Institut Laue-Langevin in France, Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, and the future operating European Spallation Source in Sweden. Furthermore, the PhD student will perform first-principles calculations to investigate the structural, electronic, and dynamical properties of the materials, to compare with the experiments.

PhD position summary/title: PhD positions in Quantum Nanophotonics

The positions are in the brand-new Quantum Photonics Laboratory (QPL). We are scientists, applied physicists, and engineers. We explore the flow of and interactions between light, sound, and microwaves.

There is no reliable path to a sustainable growth in society’s capability to compute and connect. A key issue is the excessive energy loss caused by communication. In classical datacenters and computers, this energy loss leads to heating and greenhouse gas emissions. In emerging quantum processors, the energy loss prevents scaling up small quantum devices into more powerful systems. We are developing new hardware to address this. Read more on our webpage and in this popular science article.

This project is part of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), a 12-year, billion-SEK initiative with the purpose of advancing Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of quantum technology, and to build a Swedish quantum computer. We are members of the Quantum Technology division in the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2). We work with the experimentalists in the Photonics division and the theorists at the Applied Quantum Physics division. Our department hosts the state-of-the-art MC2 Nanofabrication Laboratory cleanroom, the largest such facility in Northern Europe. We have cutting-edge cryogenic, microwave and optical measurement capabilities.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position on the biaxial thermo-mechanical fatigue resistance of superalloys

The BIFROST project is funded by Vinnova via the NFFP8 programme and is carried out in close collaboration with GKN Aerospace Sweden AB. High performance gas turbine engines require advanced component manufacturing techniques, and in today’s engines cast and forged parts are often welded together. Additive manufacturing could potentially contribute to reduced material usage, high flexibility in the design geometry and tailored anisotropic properties. However, complex geometries are subject to multi-axial stress states and strong thermal gradients in service. Advanced mechanical and microstructural characterisation is required for correct design and life prediction of such components. The BIFROST project will investigate the biaxial thermo-mechanical fatigue resistance of both forged and additively manufactured superalloys for use in aircraft engines. Our uniaxial Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue (TMF) test rig and our advanced biaxial TMF test rig will be the main equipment used together with optical and electron microscopes.

The university was founded in 1829 following a donation by William Chalmers, a director of the Swedish East India Company. He donated part of his fortune for the establishment of an “industrial school”. Chalmers was run as a private institution until 1937, when the institute became a state-owned university. In 1994, the school was incorporated as an aktiebolag under the control of the Swedish Government, the faculty and the Student Union. Chalmers is one of only three universities in Sweden which are named after a person, the other two being Karolinska Institutet and Linnaeus University.
