The Division of Chemical & Biological Sciences at Ames Laboratory, a Department of Energy National Laboratory affiliated with Iowa State University, is seeking a postdoctoral associate with a strong background in solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The chosen candidate will become a part of a multidisciplinary team, consisting of Ames Laboratory as well as other U.S. DOE labs and universities, working towards the development, and understanding, of next generation supercapacitors. The work will mainly focus on the measurement of charge carrier dynamics and the characterization of electrode materials by both conventional as well as dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) enhanced solid-state NMR. Studies of electrolyte-ion transport will use pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR. The candidate will also be encouraged to work in the fundamental development of NMR methods and instrumentation.

Develop genome-scale libraries for genotype-phenotype mapping of candidate probiotic chassis organisms. Screen libraries against a variety of conditions and use high throughput sequencing to rapidly identify gene products that enhance desired phenotypes. Communicate results in both written and oral format. The DOE project will focus on Mapping and Manipulating Phase Transformation Pathways in complex materials and extreme conditions to design and control properties, e.g., including quantum, magnetic, and structural materials, such as high-entropy alloys and quantum materials, as well as collaborate with experimental groups to verify results. Green’s function, multiple-scattering theory (KKR) methods, including linear-response, along with a working knowledge of correlated electron and excited-state physics is necessary to develop unique thermodynamic and electronic-structure-based capabilities.

The postdoctoral research will be tasked with probing the role of F-actin regulatory proteins such as formins and Arp2/3 in controlling directed cell migration during wound healing in response to complex environmental cues including both extracellular matrix alignment and gradients in mechanical stiffness. We seek a postdoctoral researcher for a USDA-funded project to explore whether high nitrogen use efficiency maize germplasm select for a rhizosphere community whose metabolic activities are better at acquiring nitrogen from soil/environment and more efficiently deliver it to maize.
