Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position (2 years) in Aquatic Ecology – Environmental drivers of fish top consumer growth, production and size structure
We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the international research project “Holistic evaluation and restoration measures of human impacts on freshwater ecosystems across biogeographical gradients (FreshRestore)”, co-funded by the European Commission (https://www.biodiversa.org/1587) and Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Globally, lake ecosystems are under anthropogenic stress (e.g. climate change, land use and fishing). A key challenge is to understand and predict how freshwaters over gradients of catchments respond to different stressors, and to gain knowledge how to preserve and restore these ecosystems. FreshRestore will develop integrative models to predict population and food web levels consequences of natural environmental drivers and anthropogenic stressors using ecological population- and statistical models and large data sets of lake abiotic parameters, fish communities and food webs across biogeographical gradients in Fennoscandia, combined with information on climate, land- and water-use, and mitigation efforts (e.g., habitat restorations). The ecological and socio-economic models will facilitate evaluation of the cost-efficiency of different nature-based solutions and elucidate how to improve biodiversity in lakes through different implementations. The consortium includes partners from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Spain. The project includes funding for travel costs allowing the postdoctoral researcher to visit the project partners, participate in field activities and to join scientific meetings.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position with focus on federated learning
The rapid increase of autonomous systems, connected devices, and distributed applications pose challenges in dealing with petabytes of data in diverse resource-constrained environments. Federated machine learning (FML) is collaborative learning to handle these problems without sharing data with centralized servers. However, several emerging threats target FML training, learning, and inference to fail or mislead models at early learning rounds. Attackers aim to break trustworthiness under different threat models such as insiders-outsiders attacks, semi-honest or fully malicious participants, and attacks in training, learning, or inference phases. As a result, the learning models fail to provide acceptable performance.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in molecular tumour biology, project B
Neuroblastoma (NB) arises in the sympathetic nervous system and is the most frequent extracranial solid childhood cancer, with a high degree of clinical heterogeneity ranging from spontaneous regression to fatal progression. HIF2a has been proposed as a neuroblastoma oncogene and a target for clinical intervention, this has been questioned by several studies. Our results imply a key role for HIF2a in determining a chemo-sensitive noradrenergic cellular identity and the capacity to respond to differentiation inducing treatment. We intend to perform unbiased loss- and gain-of-function studies to more robustly characterize the role of HIF2a in neuroblastoma. We will address the role of HIF2a in neuroblastoma utilizing single cell analysis of gene expression combined with clinical parameters, CRISPR/Cas9-deletion of HIF2a and overexpression in neuroblastoma cells followed by analysis both in vitro and in mouse models of the disease.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in molecular neuroscience, project A
It is not known how stable silencing of alternative gene programs is maintained once a neuronal identity has been established. This project aims to understand fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying maintenance of differentiated serotonergic and dopaminergic neuronal identity and function. Both cell types are involved in several psychiatric disorders which take a huge toll on individuals and society. In addition, midbrain dopamine neurons of the substantia nigra pars compacta constitute the key population whose degeneration is associated with Parkinson’s disease, further underscoring the clinical significance of the project.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in molecular biology/biochemistry
The postdoc position is related to a new collaborative project between researchers at the Dept. of Radiation Sciences and Umeå Centre for Molecular Medicine, Umeå university, funded by the Faculty of Medicine. The project concerns research into environmental impact of seasonal daylight dose onto early human physiology. For example, phototherapy is known for its efficacy in alleviating seasonal depression in adults but whether different daylight lengths during early childhood instigate affective imbalance in later life is unclear. This two-year project is dedicated to understand the influence of light dose on gene expression patterns, pupil sensitivity and behaviour, exploiting the extreme natural daylength changes, such as from long-day photoperiod to short-day photoperiod and vice versa here in Västerbotten.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in pupillary dynamics
In the mammalian eye, the iris sphincter muscle regulates the size of the pupil, which in turn controls the influx of light to the retina. Traditionally, the pupillary light reflex (PLR) has been considered a brain-mediated reflex. More recent data from animal studies, show that the iris can intrinsically respond to light to regulate the PLR independent on signals from the brain. Our recent publication has presented new mechanisms regulating among others synchronized pupil dilation and contraction in mouse (Sghari et al., 2020), but more details remain to be defined. Light-regulated molecular mechanisms associated with intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuation and/or open-angle glaucoma onset and progression are also of interest to understand. Thus, the main focus of this project is to understand molecular mechanisms that control light dependent regulation of the PLR and IOP.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Molecular Medicine
This project aims to unravel underlying mechanisms of type 2 diabetes development and remission. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been considered a permanent disease that deteriorates over time. There is now ample evidence to support that T2D remission is possible and associated with ability to reduce lipids accumulated in organs (ectopic fats), such as pancreas, liver and skeletal muscle. But the mechanism remains unknown. This project focus on lipid mechanisms that links to altered insulin sensitivity and secretion, which are central to both type 2 diabetes development and remission. The project involves comprehensive metabolomics and lipidomics as well as target analyses of lipid pathways and functional analyses of cells and tissues from human and animal models.
