Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Injection-Locked Terahertz Quantum Cascade Lasers
We seek a post-doctoral research fellow to join a large, collaborative, £6M EPSRC-funded project. You will focus on precision control of injection locked terahertz (THz) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs),and develop the first injection-locked laser with independent frequency and phase control of each laser mode. Specifically, you will work with frequency combs, developed within our project, to generate precise near-IR frequencies. Then, using a range of fibre-based and free-space optical techniques in the near-IR and terahertz regions of the spectrum, you will use the difference between these IR frequencies to control a QCL, and generate phase-controlled terahertz frequency combs. It will be crucial to understand and optimise coupling and losses for both optical and terahertz components.

This innovation will help to create a more sustainable livestock industry in the UK, reducing the environmental impacts of production by reducing ammonia emissions, whilst at the same time creating an additional income stream for farmers. The project takes a circular approach to sustainability by demonstrating potential reductions in the carbon footprint of pig production by including a low carbon feed through to the harvesting of ammonia and its use either directly or indirectly via hydrogen production as a net-zero fuel and power source, either on-farm, or in other applications.
