The availability of novel sensors causes an important growth of data that offers the potential for a revolutionary transformation in the biomanufacturing sector. A bioreactor is a device or vessel used in biotechnology for the cultivation of biological organisms. Conventional methods to monitor and control the evolution of the process are typically involve labor-intensive and based on infrequent measurements. At imec, a probe is currently being developed that is equipped with multiple sensors to provide continuous monitoring of bioreactor processes. The availability of this time series data makes it possible to develop a dynamic digital twin that can forecast key process parameter, such as the future evolution of cell growth, or the future quality of the bioreactor broth, etc. The aim is to extract relevant insights from this data and to transform them into actionable predictions or forecasts that can be used to optimize the working of the system.
The proposed PhD research is defined within the context of several national and international collaborations on deep learning techniques for time series analysis and model explainability. You are expected to actively work and significantly contribute to research projects in this area.
As the PhD will focus mainly on data analysis using machine learning and related algorithmic challenges, previous experience or knowledge about biomanufacturing processes is not required.

Ghent University is a top 100 university worldwide and one of the major universities in Belgium, with more than 44,000 students and 15,000 staff members. The Electrical Energy Laboratory (EELAB) at UGent is involved in a European Project “Holistic Approach to enhance the Recyclability of rare-earth permanent Magnets Obtained from aNY waste stream” (Harmony).
Harmony aims at developing an innovative, green and safe closed-loop recycling process of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) from End-of-Life (EoL) NdFeB permanent magnets, typically used in permanent magnet synchronous machines. The role of UGent as research partner is the optimization of the design of motors with recycled magnets, and to investigate the effect of a.o. unequal magnet properties.
As a PhD student, you will contribute to the development of models for axial flux permanent magnet motors. A model-based sensitivity analysis will be done of the motor electromagnetic performance as a function of magnet grade variability. The studied performance criteria are torque, efficiency, and imbalance (eccentricity). Also, you will study how the motor design can be modified to make the machine more robust against variations in the magnet properties. For this study, you can start from models developed and validated at UGent. An industrial partner will manufacture a prototype axial flux motor, in which recycled magnets will be used. The prototype can be used for validating the models.
The initial contract duration will be one year, in which you are hired as a PhD researcher. The contract can be extended to 4 years in total, under the condition of a positive evaluation after the initial period. Ghent University offers an attractive salary with additional benefits, a positive and inspiring working environment and training possibilities. PhD position summary/title: PhD Student
The behaviour of ships in restricted waters (access channels, canals, locks, harbour docks) is the main research topic of the Division. This research, covering the hydrodynamics of seagoing and inland vessels in navigation areas with restrictions in both depth and horizontal extent, is performed in close co-operation with Flanders Hydraulics (FH, Flemish Government, Antwerp) within the Knowledge Centre Manoeuvring in Shallow and Confined Water (www.shallowwater.be). This research can be considered as a niche within the field of ship hydrodynamics, as ships are mostly designed for open, deep sea. As a result, most ship hydrodynamics research worldwide is focused mainly on deep water conditions. For this reason, the Knowledge Centre has gained international recognition as one of the leading research groups in ship behaviour in confined waters. Such conditions are of main concern for ships in access channels to ports, harbour areas, docks, locks, berths.
Within this research topic a new scholarship opportunity is available to study the use of system identification techniques to enhance the training speed of artificial intelligence algorithms to cope with manoeuvres in complex environments. The candidate will operate from a hydrodynamic and experimental viewpoint, i.e. analysing existing ship data and create new test programs. These test programmes, (carried out in one of the two available state of the art towing tanks of FH with free running ship models or in real life scenarios with small ships/equivalent floating structures) allow to assess and create simplified manoeuvring models that consider the effects of the environment and that facilitate the training of more complex autonomous algorithms. Part of the research is to be conducted in close interaction with other European universities/institutes, so a willingness to travel is a must.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student
The IDLab Ghent research group is seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD student to join the distributed machine learning team. Our team focuses on developing efficient machine learning algorithms for perception and control; with diverse applications in industry, robotics, remote sensing and agriculture.
As part of our ongoing research, we identified a trend towards adaptive techniques for deep neural networks. These techniques dynamically adjust the computational cost of processing new input samples, based on factors such as input complexity, desired accuracy, or remaining battery capacity. This approach, compared to traditional architectures with fixed inference paths, proves to be more efficient in terms of latency and energy consumption, especially for resource-constrained devices like embedded compute platforms on drones and robots. As these devices operate in diverse or changing conditions, the models should support some sort of adaptive inference paths with early-exit mechanisms, or continuous learning mechanism to adapt to changing input data distributions and conditions.
In this PhD, you will be focusing on autonomous systems that use complex machine learning models to extract information from high-rate, high-dimensional sensors such as radar or hyperspectral cameras. You will design novel architectures with flexible inference paths and/or self-learning capabilities.

You will work on REXPEK, a Strategic Basic Research project funded by Flanders Make. The project resides in the virtual commissioning paradigm where (near) first-time-right commissioning of machines is pursued by means of model based design approaches. The key objective is to develop tools to suggest optimal machine settings through virtual and on site experimentation. Therefore, the reality gap between the virtual and physical experiments need be minimized. In order to reduce the remaining physical experiments, each attempt must be chosen so to yield as much information as possible. The project takes a unique angle to this problem by taking into account the human as a valuable resource both as a knowledge base, a performance sensor or critique as well as a discriminator between what could be good or bad settings.

The PhD position is embedded into the 5-year project “EO4PEAT” funded by the Belgian Earth Observation programme (https://eo.belspo.be/en/stereo-iv-programme). In EO4PEAT, an international team of four Belgian research groups and two international partners will develop novel techniques for the monitoring and modeling of peatlands, in particular over the tropics, by exploiting the information from available Earth Observation (EO) data. The conducted research is of high societal interest since peatlands are the most carbon-dense ecosystems on Earth and pose the risk of becoming global hotspots of carbon dioxide emissions after climate change or direct human disturbance. In this regard, EO4PEAT focuses on two key tropical regions of major global concerns: The Southeast Asian peatlands due to the huge extent of Land Use and Land Cover Change (LULCC) over the last decades and the Congo basin peatlands in the Cuvette Centrale due to their high vulnerability to climate change and the anticipated immense increase of land use pressures and human disturbances. In both areas, there is an urgent need for action to preserve and/or restore the peatland ecosystem functions and unique biodiversity. The information from high-quality satellite-based monitoring products can significantly support ongoing climate change mitigation activities. EO4PEAT is committed to disseminating research outcomes through peer-reviewed publications in highly-ranked journals and presentations at notable international conferences.

Delghust et al. (2015) has proposed using parametric geometries to represent the variation of geometric features in dwellings without losing the consistency of the floor plan. This concept has already been successfully applied to study energy performance assessment of dwellings and the potential
of hybridGEOTABS to reduce CO2 emissions in non-residential buildings. This approach will be used to generate a statistically representative set of at least 5 common dwelling geometry models for the simulation of the performance of the NudgeFlow concept.
To be able to benchmark the performance of the NudgeFlow system, a consistent set of implementations for the traditional ventilation systems described in the Belgian standard NBN D 50 001, other proposals for alternative designs of the flow path such as extended cascade ventilation (Rojas, 2015) as well as optimized designs for these concepts will be created for each of the dwelling geometries.

About Ghent University, Belgium –Official Website
Ghent University is a public research university located in Ghent, Belgium. It was established in 1817 by King William I of the Netherlands. After the Belgian revolution of 1830, the newly formed Belgian state began to administer the university. In 1930, the university became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium, whereas French had previously been the standard academic language in what was Université de Gand. In 1991, it was granted major autonomy and changed its name accordingly from State University of Ghent (Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Gent, abbreviated as RUG) to its current designation.
In contrast to the Catholic University of Leuven or the Free University of Brussels, UGent considers itself a pluralist university in a special sense, i.e. not connected to any particular religion or political ideology. Its motto Inter Utrumque (‘In Between Both Extremes’), on the coat of arms, suggests the acquisition of wisdom and science comes only in an atmosphere of peace, when the institution is fully supported by the monarchy and fatherland.
Ghent University is one of the biggest Flemish universities, consisting of 44,000 students and 9,000 staff members. The University also supports the University Library and the University Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals in Belgium. It is one of the greatest beneficiaries of funding from the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). Ghent University consistently rates among the top 100 universities in the world.
