PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Markerless 3D localization of surgical tool in a per-operative context

Today, according to Global Market Insights, the orthopedic medical device (MD) market is growing rapidly and will be worth more than $22.4 billion by 2025. Joint replacement (hip, knee, extremities) represents nearly 37% of the market share. These devices include conventional ancillary instruments, custom-made guides, navigation systems, and robotic systems. More recently, augmented reality (AR) navigation systems have been developed. They are recognized for their accuracy, low cost, ease of use, as well as clinical added value. It is in this context that the ANR MARSurg project [2021-2025] aims to implement an innovative surgical navigation solution with high scientific, technological and clinical potentials.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Modeling Kinesthetic and Tactile Properties of Virtual Environments

The goal of this PhD is to propose a complete haptics pipeline that is agnostic on the haptic device used and integrate not only the definition of the haptic properties, but also the interaction characteristics of the user. The rendering of the haptic properties should not only be driven by the virtual object properties, but also by the actions of the user in the virtual environment [Vizcay 2021]. Thus, the interaction capabilities of the user should be taken into account [Dewez 2021]. In particular, avatars, the users’ virtual representation, is becoming ubiquitous in virtual reality applications. In this context, the avatar becomes the medium which enables users to interact with the virtual environment and also the main source of tactile and kinesthetic sensations. Moreover, the user’s avatar can modulate the perceived haptic sensations [Jauregui 2014], enabling a wider range of sensations that the ones provided solely by haptic actuators. Finally, haptic sensations should be congruent with the actual user’s actions in order to avoid the potential generation of an uncanny valley [Berger 2018], which is strongly linked with the notions of presence [Skarbez 2017] and virtual embodiment [Kilteny 2012].

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Socially-Aware Embodied Conversational Agents: Achieving Task and Social Goals in Human-Computer Conversation with students

The objective of this project is to build embodied conversational agents (also known as ECAs, or virtual humans, or chatbots, or multimodal dialogue systems) that have the ability to engage their users in both social and task talk, where the social talk serves to improve task performance. In order to achieve this objective, we model human-human conversation, and integrate the models into ECAs, and then evaluate their performance. This position is a 3-4 year doctoral contract.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Koopman operator modelling of non-linear dynamical systems for ensemble methods.

The goal of this project is to incorporate statistical learning tools in ensemble-based data assimilation methods for large scale dynamical systems from fluid mechanics and geophysical flows. Especially, it is to learn eigenfunctions of the Koopman operator restricted to a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) transported by the dynamical system. This RKHS transported in time by the dynamical system constitutes a manifold sampled by the ensemble of trajectories, in which efficient estimations can be performed. This manifold has so nice mathematical properties, that it is given the nickname of “Wonderland”.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Trustworthy multi-site privacy-preserving technologies

While AI techniques are becoming ever more powerful, there is a growing concern about potential risks and abuses. As a result, there has been an increasing interest in research directions such as privacy-preserving machine learning, explainable machine learning, fairness and data protection legislation.
Privacy-preserving machine learning aims at learning (and publishing or applying) a model from data while the data is not revealed. Notions such as (local) differential privacy and its generalizations allow to bound the amount of information revealed. The overall goal of the TRUMPET project is to research and develop novel privacy enhancement methods for Federated Learning, and to deliver a highly scalable Federated AI service platform for researchers, that will enable AI-powered studies of siloed, multi-site, cross-domain, cross-border European datasets with privacy guarantees that exceed the requirements of GDPR.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Self-supervised learning for implicit shape reconstruction

Recent years have seen a surge in implicit neural shape representations for modeling 3D objects and scenes within deep learning frameworks. Thanks to their ability to continuously represent detailed shapes with arbitrary topologies in a memory-efficient way, these representations alleviate many of the shortcomings of the traditional alternatives such as polygon meshes, point clouds and voxel grids. In practice, these shape functions are typically multi-layer perceptrons mapping 3D points to occupancy or signed distance values. The zero level set of the inferred field can be rendered differentiably through variants of ray marching and tessellated into explicit meshes with Marching Cubes. Coupling these implicit neural functions with conditioning mechanisms allows generalization across multiple shapes. For instance, combining their inputs with local features generated from additional encoding networks [1,2,3,4] yields single forward pass inference models that can learn 3D reconstruction from various input modalities such as images [5,6] or partial point clouds [1,2,3,4].

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Automated Reasoning for Set Theory

The ANR project BLaSST aims at bridging combinatorial and symbolic techniques in automatic theorem proving, in particular for proof obligations arising from models written in the B formalism. Work will be carried out on SAT-based techniques as well as on more expressive SMT formalisms. In both cases, encoding techniques, optimized resolution techniques, model generation, and lemma suggestion will be considered. Combining both lines of work, the expected scientific impact is a substantially higher degree of automation of solvers for expressive input languages by leveraging higher-order reasoning and enumerative instantiation over finite domains. The effectiveness of the techniques developed in the project will be evaluated by applying them to benchmark sets provided by the industrial partner.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M PhD Student in Operating Systems

Efficient lock algorithms are key to ensuring application scalability on multi-core architectures [1, 2, 3]. While many lock algorithms have been proposed in the past decades to improve lock handover times under high contention as well as cache and NUMA locality, even the best lock algorithms can perform poorly due to unfortunate decisions from the OS scheduler. The Berkeley Packet Filter (BPF) makes it possible to inject verified code inside the Linux kernel. While BPF was historically used for packet filtering, it is now commonly used for profiling, and it has recently been used in more exotic use cases (e.g., [4]).

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position F/M Algorithmic aspects of quantum communication

This project is at the intersection of the fields of quantum information theory, approximationalgorithms and optimization. Its objective is to leverage tools from optimization theory in order to build analgorithmic theory of communicationthat would go beyond the current approach founded by Shannon’s paper “A Mathematical Theory of Communication”. The goal is to establish efficient algorithms that determine the optimal method for reliable communication using a noisy medium. This approach is particularly appealing in the context of quantum information theory for two reasons : Shannon’s approach turned out to be much less successful in the quantum setting and the asymptotic definition of communication rates has less practical relevance as we only have access to small quantum systems.
