(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral position – Accelerating the roll-out of net zero pathways for the Swiss and European energy system

There is an urgent need to create sustainable and resilient value chains to support and speed up the energy transition. However, Switzerland and the EU are highly dependent on imported critical devices and raw materials – especially in strategic sectors, such as renewable energy. The project SPEED2ZERO of the joint initiative of the ETH domain aims to develop toolboxes, action plans, and technology to enable a sustainable transformation to a net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) and biodiversity-positive Switzerland. Solutions will target immediate action conducive to halving GHG emissions by 2030, developing the required infrastructure, ensuring a resilient energy system, and securing biodiversity. In the context of this project, the Reliability and Risk Engineering group will research transition pathways for the Swiss and European energy systems that are compatible with climate targets (i.e., net-zero GHG emissions by 2050) and will analyse factors that can hinder the roll-out of net zero pathways. These include global industry production capacity of renewable devices, policy-driven adoption rates, and propose measures that can accelerate the Swiss energy system transition to 2030.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in “Microbial chemotaxis at the continental scale”

Understanding how organisms forage within a heterogeneous resource landscape is a fundamental goal of ecology. Within the ocean, populations of microorganisms govern marine productivity and biogeochemical cycling over vast, ocean basin scales. However, from the perspective of an individual planktonic microbe, important ecological processes including resource acquisition, predation and symbiosis, occur over microscopic scales, often within a surprisingly heterogeneous seascape shaped by microscale gradients of chemical resources and foraging cues. Evidence from theoretical and laboratory-based studies indicate that some marine microbes are highly adept at foraging within patchy environments using chemotaxis – the ability to migrate up or down chemical gradients – and that these behaviours have important ecological and biogeochemical implications.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Researcher – Computational workflows for metabolic flux analysis by stable isotopes

The group of Prof. Zamboni has a long history in the development and use of tracing experiments for the analysis of cellular metabolism. The approach relies on the supplementation of isotopically labelled metabolites. These include stable isotopes (e.g. 13C, 2H), whose structure gets scrambled under the action of metabolism. If appropriately designed, the resulting labelling patterns indicate the activity of intracellular metabolic pathways and reactions. Quantitative information about fluxes is obtained by measuring the labelling patterns by mass spectrometry and by mathematical inference with a model that accounts for all possible atomic transitions. However, to date, the adoption of tracer studies by non-expert groups is hindered by the often prohibitive need for expertise and technical means.

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc: Participatory modelling of wood construction bioeconomy scenarios

MainWood Project: In March 2023, ETH Zurich, Empa, WSL, and EPF Lausanne launched MainWood, an interdisciplinary research project to provide the scientific basis for transitioning to a wood-based construction bioeconomy in Switzerland. Drawing on the expertise of the four ETH Domain institutions, the research encompasses forest dynamics and production under climate change, scenarios of material use and flows, new construction materials, development of new design and AI approaches to maximise resource use efficiencies, life cycle assessment evaluating impacts on carbon emissions and biodiversity, and costing models. The project aims to identify key leverage points in the value chain to scale wood construction and to deliver environmentally optimal Swiss wood-use scenarios. We will draw on environmental, economic, technical, societal, and political research to develop an understanding of the wood supply chain through to the built environment, to identify opportunities for, and to understand the implications of, interventions towards a circular bioeconomy.

(15) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: SNSF-funded Postdoc Position in Multiphoton Intravital Imaging of Heterotopic Ossification

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a very common and sometimes highly debilitating pathology characterized by the formation of mature bone in soft tissues. The underlying mechanisms are still poorly-understood and therapies to prevent and heal HO have a low efficiency. It is not uncommon that bone has to be removed surgically. This formation of bone in soft tissue is the result of an osteoinductive process during which stem cells are differentiated into bone cells. This property is essential to treat large bone defects. Currently, osteoinduction can be achieved by the implantation of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), but the safety of BMP has been questioned. Another approach is to implant osteoinductive bone graft substitutes, but their potency is low, and the underlying mechanisms are still debated. Demonstrating that a low extracellular calcium concentration is key in triggering bone formation and having a better understanding of this process could open up new opportunities in the design of potent osteoinductive bone graft substitutes and the treatment of impaired bone healing.

(18) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in integrated photonics for classical and quantum memories by nanoimprinting

This project aims to realize a quantum memory on chip using the same material to generate, guide and store few photons. Dopants will be incorporated into sol-gel of metal-oxides, typically lithium niobate, prior to nanoimprint the chip with the different building blocks.

The counter-intuitive perception that nonlinear optical effects are limited in random assemblies of nanocrystals give rise to puzzling questions that will be investigated. Can those assemblies be used as a testbed to demonstrate strong light confinement and efficient frequency conversion without phase matching? Is there a method to control the orientation of the crystals during the fabrication and to design quantum devices? Can we build scalable and efficient PICs for classical and quantum applications?

(19) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc Position: Mechanistic Mathematical Modelling for Personalised Medicine

We seek to establish mechanistic modelling in personalized medicine. Mechanistic modelling enables the integration of both prior knowledge about regulatory feedback and the physical-chemical constraints posed by diffusion-based transport into a computational framework. Unlike typical statistical models, mechanistic models represent the biomedical and clinical knowledge about the regulatory processes. Similar to clinicians in their daily work, such models can operate based on clinical datasets that are too small for machine-learning approaches. But unlike clinicians, the models can encompass more information, are more consistent, and can use mathematics to predict the non-linear dynamical behaviour based on the known regulatory interactions. In combination, mechanistic computational models are promising approaches to personalize and guide both patient data collection and treatments based on the few patient data points that can be routinely collected in the clinic.
