(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctor in public law with focus on environmental and administrative law

The post-doctoral fellow will examine how European, and national regulations can be applied to improve water availability and water quality in Sweden. This includes mapping the existing rules for water management in Sweden as well as at EU level. In particular, the post-doctoral fellow will investigate the incorporation of the EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC (WFD) into Swedish law and the subsequent legal acts related to water management. The post-doctoral fellow will analyse legal possibilities to prioritise and allocate water resources at national level in a more sustainable and equitable way, taking into account the challenges posed by how climate change may affect water availability in the future. This could include investigating the possibilities under existing legislation to create a market for buying and selling water permits, using dynamic permits for water use or reusing treated wastewater. The 2030 Agenda is the framework for sustainable development that the world’s nations have signed to end extreme poverty, reduce inequalities, solve the climate crisis, promote peace and equity and much more. To achieve the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals, research has several important roles: to identify challenges and conflicting objectives, contribute to new solutions, generate dialogue and learning between different societal stakeholders and critically analyse the goals. Lund University aspires to be a part of the solution and has therefore initiated a research programme on sustainable development with postdoc fellowships in interdisciplinary projects. The projects will not only constitute platforms for the postdocs’ career development, but also form a basis for national and European applications, and for future environments for excellence and profiling. The programme is also to develop the postdocs’ expertise in teaching and learning in higher education. For more information about the programme, please visit Excellence Programme for Sustainable Development | Sustainability Forum (lu.se)

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral position in Biomedical Engineering with partial placement at the MAX IV Laboratory

Soft knee joint tissues connect or transmit forces during movement in the body.  Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disease where the tissues degenerate, which affects their composition, microstructure and mechanical performance. The position is within a larger project that strives to understand the development of OA, in order to develop tools for better prediction of the onset and progression of osteoarthritis in the knee joint tissues. This position will focus on the role of the subchondral bone and the soft/mineralized tissue interface. The beamline goal for the post-doc specifically is dedicated to X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), with the main aim to develop calibration strategies for 3D XRF measurements.  Self-absorption is a recurrent problem in 3D XRF so many beamline users would benefit from the development of self-absorption correction schemes. This development will be carried out for the study of the mineralized tissue with the scientific goals directly linked to the research questions addressed above, with a focus on understanding the interface between soft and mineralized tissues and the progression of mineralization during development of OA. Specific emphasis is on elucidating the role of different trace elements and links to inflammation.  This employment is at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, but with half of the time spent at the MAX IV laboratory, specifically the NanoMAX beamline.

How to increase Brain Power – Secrets of Brain Unlocked

(20) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in Soil Microbial AgroEcology

Imbalanced weather regimes endanger important soil ecosystem functions, and strategies for climate adaptation and resilience to extreme event are crucial to secure food production and maintain the natural food webs in soils. Because of climate change, Sweden is increasingly likely to experience weather extremes such as summer droughts or heavy rain events. Farm management can enhance or decrease resilience to extreme weather events. Organic farms have been shown to be more resilient against environmental stresses compared to conventionally managed farms, and can, under some conditions, outperform conventional farms under periods of extreme weather, especially under drought. Microorganisms themselves are affected by soil management practices, and microbial functions can be impaired by both agricultural management practice and climate stress. The aim of this BECC (see film about BECC further down) research area funded project is to determine how different farm management types impact the microbial performance and the resilience of different soils to climatic disturbances, especially drought. An important part of drought resilience is mediated via the soil’s organic matter concentrations, and soil organic matter formation and stabilization is strongly controlled by the soil’s microbial community. This project will investigate the influence of farm management type via a set of 30 conventionally or organically managed farms in Scania, and determine soil processes as microbial growth, enzymatic activities, and the soils’ biodiversity and direct characterization of trophic interactions. Combined microscale measurements using microfluidic soil chips, optical microscopy observations and molecular characterization of the soil microbial communities will be used together with bulk analyses of the soils. The postdoc will further be stationed for approximately 3 months of their time at the University of Gothenburg.
