A postdoctoral research fellowship is available in the lab of Dr. Mari DeMarco in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of British Columbia (www.DeMarcoLab.ca). The successful applicant will lead lab efforts in advancing protein biomarkers of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Candidate protein biomarkers have been previously identified by our lab that differentiate individuals with FTD from phenotypically related disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, and the postdoctoral fellow will lead assay development to advance these biomarkers into a clinical diagnostic tool. The primary analytical tool used will be targeted mass spectrometry. The DeMarco Lab has a distinctive track-record in the innovation, evaluation and implementation of clinical mass spectrometry assays for protein biomarkers, with many of these novel tests actively being used in medical care.

At Mérida Labs, we are looking for a motivated and solution-oriented postdoctoral fellow. Our group focuses on integrated energy systems research that encompasses breakthrough technologies, policy, energy conversion, new business models, techno-economic and life cycle analyses, machine learning, optimization, AI, intelligent networks, among others. The role will focus on a project in partnership with InDro Robotics, Rogers, Canada Post and Honeywell. The first objective is to develop a last mile parcel delivery modelling that optimizes the control, routing, and operation for zero-emission ground and aerial vehicles. As the team leader, you will have the opportunity to develop this line of research, where you will also support and mentor student teams, and identify ways to expand the relationship with our partners and the research goals.

Granzymes are a family of serine proteases with 5 members identified in humans. With the exception of Granzyme A and Granzyme B, very little is known about the other 3 proteases, providing many opportunities to carve out a niche for discovery, translation, therapeutics development, patents, and publications. Our research program spans basic molecular biology, biochemistry, and proteomics through to target validation, proof-of-concept in animal and human models, and collaborations with clinicians and industry. The Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) will be responsible for conceiving, designing, and implementing basic and translational research studies investigating the degradomes or substrate profiles of granzymes and their pathophysiological roles in the context of pruritus and inflammation in aging skin and/or other dermatologic conditions. The position will also provide opportunities to collaborate and work in areas of wound healing and regenerative medicine with both industry and leading academic collaborators at UBC and abroad. The PDF will have direct access to state-of-the-art mass spectrometry, cell and molecular biology, imaging, and computational infrastructure.

A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC) ‐ in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The successful applicant will become a member of the Collaboration for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE)—an academic research group whose mission is to improve health‐care related outcomes through the application of the best in research, education and practice enhancement strategies. The successful candidate will be involved in an exciting cross‐Canada collaboration to apply advanced epidemiological techniques to build predictive models of health outcomes among individuals with neurological diseases. The focus of the projects will be in multiple sclerosis (MS), with opportunities to expand or explore applications to health economics and economic evaluation. This is an opportunity to become part of a landmark Canadian longitudinal study of MS progression (CanProCo), incorporating both large retrospective and prospective cohorts with a wide range of data sources and elements (e.g., administrative data, clinical assessments, neuro-immunologic measures, and medical imaging).

We seek a fulltime postdoctoral teaching and research scholar to join the Living Data Project at the University of British Columbia (UBC). The Living Data Project is a national initiative, led by the Canadian Institute of Ecology and Evolution (CIEE), to (1) preserve – using best practices in digital archiving and data management – legacy datasets in ecology, evolution and environmental science; (2) synthesize scientific data and concepts using collaborative team approaches; and (3) provide training for graduate students and other early career researchers in data management, reproducible research, synthesis statistics and scientific collaboration. The postdoctoral scholar will be responsible for training and mentorship of graduate students involved in Living Data Project courses, including students from UBC and other Canadian universities. The postdoctoral scholar will also assist in the organization of data rescue internships with academic and non-academic researchers, and organize, in collaboration with similar postdoctoral fellows located at other Canadian universities, multi-institutional training events such as workshops and working groups. The postdoctoral scholar will also develop and pursue research compatible with the goals of the Living Data Project, including through the working groups, self-directed synthesis science and other collaborations with Living Data Project members. Minor duties will include guest lectures with UBC’s Data Science Institute, and database management with Diane Srivastava’s lab.  The Living Data Project provides exceptional opportunities for postdoctoral scholars to expand their professional networks and exposure to non-academic employers. UBC faculty will assist the postdoctoral scholar in designing and implementing their own customized professional development plan.

To conduct data harmonization across multiple data-types including electronic health records, digital pathology, clinical notes and omics measurements (bulk and spatial) for patients undergoing heart transplantation. This position is strongly focused on method and software development related to 1) learning representations from multimodal data and 2) developing predictive models of rejection trajectories using multimodal data. Major responsibilities: 1) benchmarking existing methodologies for time-series data imputation, clustering and classification, 2) developing methods and software for the analysis of partially observed, multimodal time-series data, and 3) writing research proposals, reports and publications.

A postdoctoral position is available in the Robotics and Control Lab in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. The lab has a research theme on medical ultrasound imaging, especially signal processing of ultrasound data to quantify tissue health. This includes traditional ultrasound hardware as well as novel microfabricated transducers. The lab has a strong view towards translation of technology into clinical practise with a successful history of working with industry and hospitals. The candidate will have the primary responsibility of design, characterization and testing of novel ultrasound signal and image processing and analysis algorithms. A good understanding is needed for the different domains: electronics, acoustics and mechanics. This work will be carried out in collaboration with a team working in each of these domains plus clinical researchers. Additionally, the candidate will have the opportunity to work with a network of researchers in the Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems, Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory the BC Women’s Hospital Research Institute.  Training opportunities will be available across this ecosystem.

As the successful applicant, you will have an opportunity to participate in research related to studies of rare pion decays with the PIONEER experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). PIONEER (https://www.psi.ch/en/pioneer) is a next generation pion decay experiment focusing on precision tests of  flavor physics. PIONEER is building on the previous PIENU (at TRIUMF) and PEN (at PSI) experiments. PIENU results currently provide the best test of lepton universality and are sensitive to a plethora of large mass and low mass new physics. PIONEER will improve the sensitivity to new physics by one order of magnitude and will address  the unitarity of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa matrix through studies of pion beta decay. The PIONEER collaboration is an international team from 25 institutes from Canada, China, Europe, Japan and US.

The Fellow will be expected to design and implement studies under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, while also contributing to existing studies. Focus will be on quantitative research projects, including: (1) an administrative-linked cohort study evaluating slow-release oral morphine as opioid agonist therapy; and (2) a cohort study evaluating injectable opioid agonist therapies in Vancouver. This post will suit recent PhD graduates with strong research skills who are seeking to advance an academic career in public health and health services research. The Fellow will be responsible for preparing grant and fellowship applications, and analysing and writing up existing data, working under the direction of the Principal Investigator. The mission of the Cassie & Friends International Postdoctoral Fellowship in Pediatric Rheumatology is to provide training to PhD researchers in the field of pediatric rheumatology and to support future investigative careers in the improved understanding of rheumatic diseases. The rheumatic disease family is a collection of multiple diseases that include the more commonly known juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), rarer conditions like vasculitis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and a relatively new group of autoinflammatory diseases. Despite genetic and phenotypic differences, all rheumatic diseases are characterized by relapsing and remitting episodes of pain and inflammation. They provide a clear example of morbidity and disability that results from immune dysregulation and uncontrolled inflammation. One of the major challenges in the management of childhood rheumatic diseases is to balance the risks associated with therapy against the risks associated with either undertreating aggressive disease or over-treating less aggressive disease. This is particularly problematic in children as there are few, if any, treatments that are specific and safe for a growing child. The successful candidate will lead investigative efforts towards the improved understanding of immunological mechanisms of childhood rheumatic diseases that will aid diagnosis and therapeutic decision making. The fellow will be offered an appointment through the University of British Columbia (UBC, Vancouver, BC) Department of Pediatrics. The initial term will be for 1 year commencing no later than Jan 2023, with a possibility for extension for a second year. Research will be conducted at the British Columbia Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHRI, also in Vancouver, BC) under the supervision of Dr. Kelly Brown. This is a highly dedicated and collaborative research environment in which the candidate will interact regularly with clinicians and scientists in the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology at British Columbia Children’s Hospital.

The research project will focus on the development of sensing technology based on our functionalized paper substrates. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. and have ideally demonstrated expertise in the design and characterization of piezoelectric sensors, resonant devices and sensor instrumentation and have experience with the practical implementation of sensor signal measurement systems, data acquisition and processing hardware and algorithms. Candidates with additional expertise in environmental sensing technology are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants should be capable of independent work and collaborative research working as part of a team in an interdisciplinary research setting. Successful candidates will engage in an active collaboration between the UBC Labs and industry collaborators to develop sensors and demonstration prototypes based on our novel piezoelectric paper substrates and support the continued customization and optimization of these materials by working with the research team.

You will lead a CIHR-funded project on the characterization and targeting of a new class of highly specific cell surface epitopes in childhood cancer. You will use and advance new mass spectrometry approaches developed by our group to study the cell surface of primary pediatric cancer specimens and model systems and will use and advance cell biological and biochemical approaches to develop new modes to target and monitor malignant cells. You will develop leads for target-specific binding molecules and elucidate mechanisms underlying the occurrence of theragnostic targets. You will also have the opportunity to supervise graduate and undergraduate students, gain leadership experience in collaborative projects and contribute to grant applications. If of interest we will work with you in the latter half of your fellowship to develop a secondary project that provides preliminary data for your first independent position and grant.
