(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Statistics (Causal Inference)

We are seeking a Research Associate with expertise in causal inference to join a project entitled “Advancing understanding of multimorbidity in metabolic disease through innovation in analytical methods”. This project is a collaboration between the University of Manchester, University of Oxford and Novo Nordisk. You will be responsible for developing statistical methods to allow for multi-morbidity prediction under different hypothetical interventions to account for treatment start/stop/switching through the life course. This would allow users to make counterfactual predictions, such as “does starting treatment X reduce this patient’s multimorbidity risk?”. The methodological focus is therefore on combining methods from causal inference with clinical prediction modelling – an emerging and important area of research. The clinical focus of this project is on managing polypharmacy (when patients take many medications) for patients with multimorbidity in the context of metabolic diseases (obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease).

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associates in RNA Biology and Gene Expression (2 Posts)

We seek two highly motivated Postdoctoral Researchers to study the dynamics and specificity of RNP granule formation using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as an experimental model. This project will explore how RNP granules are used to manage mRNA fate in response to stress conditions, focussing on the differential fate of mRNAs (storage vs. degradation) and defining how these mechanisms facilitate survival from stress. The positions will involve the use of yeast molecular biology and a wide-range of molecular biochemical techniques including next generation sequencing to study how stress conditions influence RNA biology and localization.

  • Position 1 requires a background in yeast molecular biology including yeast cell analysis (microscopy).
  • Position 2 requires experience in RNA Biology and next generation nucleotide sequencing including attendant bioinformatic analysis.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Air Pollutant Exposure to Indoor and Outdoor Sources

The University of Manchester has been funded within the UKRI Clean Air Strategic Priority funded consortium INGENIOUS (UnderstandING the sourcEs, traNsformations and fates of IndOor air pollUtantS) to conduct measurements of particulate composition from air sampled in households across the ‘Born in Bradford (BiB)’ cohort. We are seeking to appoint a researcher familiar with mass spectrometric instruments usually deployed online (Chemical Ionisation Mass Spectrometry, CIMS and Aerosol Mass Spectrometry, AMS), to sample from filters collected from 100 households across the cohort. The successful candidate will liaise closely with our project partners at the Universities of York and Cambridge and at BiB, to comprehensively map the main sources, transformations and fate of air pollutants in typical UK residences through incorporation of the PM composition measurements with PM loadings measured from low cost sensors, with composition measured from ambient sources in previous projects and with detailed mass spectral fingerprints from offline techniques measured in INGENIOUS. They will develop and apply the technique for reliably determining particle composition from the filter desorptions and for its interpretation in the context of ambient online composition determinations and integration into a broader dataset of PM measurements from across the cohort. She/he will deliver, and disseminate by publication, novel scientific outputs from the project.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Environmental Sustainability in Immigrant Households

The project investigates how Global South to North migration and the drive for urban sustainability intersect at the household level. The location is Manchester, where increasing immigration and ethnic diversity combine with an agenda to become a leading green city in Europe. Through mixed-methods and community- based research, we are examining how immigrants from Pakistan and Somalia, two of the largest and fastest-growing groups in Manchester, perceive the green agenda and engage in ‘environmentally-significant’ practices in daily life. We are also investigating how immigrants’ engagement in sustainability practices can contribute to building social cohesion and community resilience. This project builds on pilot research, the findings of which we discuss in a 2019 journal article.
