The research project, “Next-Generation Hybrid Dampers: Integrating Tuned Metamaterials and Particle Damping,” seeks to develop a novel approach to engineering structural components with adaptable, adjustable damping characteristics.
Vibration-induced fatigue and shock loading are among the primary causes of failure in critical engineering components. Although particle damping is an effective passive vibration-control technique, its performance can be limited by phenomena such as granular jamming and dead zones, where particles become immobilized and dissipate less energy. The project seeks to overcome these limitations by combining particle damping with architected metamaterial concepts enabled by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF). The proposed approach will employ optimized internal cavities acting as Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs), designed to resonate near critical structural vibration modes. The resulting dynamic motion is expected to enhance particle activity, reduce jamming effects, and improve energy dissipation. In parallel, engineered powders, including Cermetal and WC-Co-based materials, will be investigated as energy-absorbing media within the damping system. PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher on Ribosome Speed Control in Neurodegeneration
Protein synthesis is one of the most crucial steps in controlling gene expression. The speed at which a ribosome reads the mRNA transcript is not constant, but varies depending on the transcript and the encoded protein. This variation in ribosome speed is necessary for certain proteins to fold correctly. This has important implications for neurodegenerative diseases, which are characterised by the accumulation of misfolded and aggregated proteins. While we have a basic understanding of protein synthesis, we know little about the mechanisms that control ribosome speed in healthy and diseased neurons.
In this CORE project funded by the FNR, we will elucidate these mechanisms in neurons from patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and from healthy individuals. To this end, we will integrate ribosome interactomics, translatomics, and nascent proteomics data in order to shed light on co-translational protein misfolding in human dopaminergic PD neurons. We will then combine these findings with genetic patient information to identify critical mutations in translation regulators that may affect the rate of protein synthesis.
This project will establish the concept of translation dysregulation as an important new area of PD pathogenesis for developing new translation-based drugs.

The technology of Massive MIMO, through the deployment of numerous antennas at both the transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) chains, has revolutionized wireless communications by significantly improving capacity and reliability, making it a favored option for various applications, including 5G. This technology has opened exciting new possibilities for 4D (three-dimensional space + Doppler) imaging using mmWave radar sensors, with exceptional spatial and temporal resolution. By utilizing a large number of antennas to transmit and receive signals, Massive MIMO radar can focus energy toward the intended target, minimizing interference from other sources. This enables the sensor to capture fine details about an object’s position, velocity, and movement direction, which can be invaluable for applications such as medical imaging, autonomous driving, in-car monitoring, industrial automation, and security surveillance.
The research, called “R4DAR,” aims to leverage emerging 4D imaging technology with Massive MIMO to create image-like radar observations in a more feasible way. PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Innovation
The doctoral researcher’s main task is to prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of entrepreneurship, working under the supervision of Prof. Christian Fisch. The thesis will be cumulative (paper-based), with the goal of publishing in leading international entrepreneurship and management journals.
The doctoral researcher will work on a topic within EINT’s research areas. The preferred theme is sustainable entrepreneurship, for example, how climate change or environmental shocks affect entrepreneurial activity, the role of sustainability certifications, or impact investing and the financing of sustainable ventures. Candidates are equally welcome to propose research questions in the group’s other areas, in particular entrepreneurial finance or entrepreneurship and AI. The thesis will be quantitative-empirical, typically drawing on large-scale datasets and econometric methods, although we are open to other methodological approaches that fit the research question. In all cases, the candidate will join a team of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers working on related questions and benefit from EINT’s ongoing projects and data infrastructure.

Successful candidates will join the new Systems and Network Security Group led by Prof. Vincent Lenders. They will contribute to cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence for cybersecurity and perform the following tasks:
- Research: Conduct scientific research to advance the field of artificial intelligence on problems related to the cybersecurity of critical infrastructure

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Bio-Based Construction Materials
The Ph.D. student will be enrolled in the Doctoral School in Science and Engineering at the University of Luxembourg, and follow a vibrant Ph.D. program that includes training in transferable skills, support for career development, lectures and teaching by international experts and annual Ph.D. symposia. Upon successful completion of the doctoral research, the candidate will receive Ph.D. in Physics degree.
The doctoral candidate will perform wet lab experiments as well as computational analysis to develop innovative biomaterials for next generation of construction materials for terrestrial, subsurface as well as space applications. Techniques including quantitative imaging (nanoscale to macroscale), microbiological assays, micro- and macroscale fluidics, statistical analysis and machine learning tools will be employed extensively. A specific focus will be in advancing biotechnological breakthroughs toward CCUS-conforming biomaterials, which can be tested and valorized as construction materials under real-life construction settings.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Multi-Scale Infrastructure Strengthening with Uhpfrc
The aim of this Ph.D. project is to develop new solutions for strengthening existing concrete infrastructure to extend their lifespan. The tasks comprise the development of a laboratory campaign of novel eco-UHPFRC mixes with conventional and textile reinforcement, the implementation of these solutions to full-scale case studies, and the study on their life-cycle impacts at the network scale.
This groundbreaking research output will lead to the extension of the service life of concrete infrastructure, leading to significant reduction of carbon emissions and costs of infrastructure management
This project is part of a multidisciplinary Horizon-Europe project on sustainable civil infrastructure, with multiple public and private partners across Europe. A European collaboration is intended with case studies or experiments in multiple countries.
This project calls for an open character with a strong knowledge on concrete structures as well as curiosity across discipline boundaries (civil engineering, material science, and computer science). We do not expect any single person to be an expert across all these fields, but you must be open to learning about and embracing challenges in fields you may not yet have been working with. PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Mechanical Engineering
The research project, “Next-Generation Hybrid Dampers: Integrating Tuned Metamaterials and Particle Damping,” seeks to develop a novel approach to engineering structural components with adaptable, adjustable damping characteristics.
Vibration-induced fatigue and shock loading are among the primary causes of failure in critical engineering components. Although particle damping is an effective passive vibration-control technique, its performance can be limited by phenomena such as granular jamming and dead zones, where particles become immobilized and dissipate less energy. The project seeks to overcome these limitations by combining particle damping with architected metamaterial concepts enabled by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF). The proposed approach will employ optimized internal cavities acting as Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs), designed to resonate near critical structural vibration modes. The resulting dynamic motion is expected to enhance particle activity, reduce jamming effects, and improve energy dissipation. In parallel, engineered powders, including Cermetal and WC-Co-based materials, will be investigated as energy-absorbing media within the damping system. The development combines computational modeling, machine learning simulations, topology optimization, additive manufacturing, and experimental validation to create advanced vibration-resistant components. So, the project is expected to deliver new design methodologies, numerical tools, and optimization frameworks to develop parts with enhanced damping performance.
