PhD position summary/title: Phd Explainable Machine Learning Models: SUMOLab – IDLab
The omnipresence of sensors causes an explosive growth of data that offers the potential for a revolutionary transformation in many sectors. The functioning of such systems can greatly benefit from data-driven predictive models that extract insights and actionable knowledge from these data streams. As machine learning models are being incorporated into a workflow, it is often desirable that the models can explain why a certain prediction was made. Therefore, explainability of such models is becoming an additional baseline requirement.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholar in the area of Environmental Nanoplastics: Detection, Characterization, Bioavailability, and Effects.
Plastic particles are everywhere in the environment and there is concern about the adverse effects they may have on organisms, and subsequently on ecosystems. Much global attention has been directed towards so-called microplastics, i.e. plastic particles with dimensions on the order of micrometers. Microplastics slowly degrade in the environment, by physical and chemical processes, into smaller and smaller entities, eventually reaching the nano-size domain. Due to difficulties in sampling and characterization, almost nothing is known about the amounts and behavior of extremely small plastic particles with dimensions on the order of nanometers, i.e. nanoplastics. Our project addresses this knowledge gap via measurement and modelling of the chemical reactivity, biouptake, and bioaccumulation of nanoplastics and their adverse effects on aquatic organisms. The results will provide fundamental information which enables robust risk assessment strategies to be developed that inform environmental policies.

PhD position summary/title: The Laboratory of Protistology and Aquatic Ecology (Ghent University) invites applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship for 1 year and extended with another 3 years (after positive evaluation) to study interactions between plankton and suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the North Sea. The impact of biological processes on SPM dynamics in coastal ecosystems is insufficiently understood: while biology is affected by the variation in SPM concentration and composition, biological processes themselves can in turn impact SPM dynamics. The student will use a combination of field and experimental approaches to study the relationship between phytoplankton community composition, exudate production and SPM dynamics and flocculation in relation to light, nutrients and temperature.

The recovery of renewable energy or production of bio-chemicals from waste streams is a key aspect in the bio-based circular economy. Anaerobic digestion plays a central role in converting organic waste into renewable energy. Despite being a full-scale mature technology, aspects such as community resilience, production rates, etc. can still be improved. PhD position summary/title: Phd in Data-Driven Optimization Models and Algorithms for Production Planning and Scheduling in Flexible Manufacturing Systems: ISyE
The availability of data, usually generated by numerous sensors embedded in both the assembled products as well as in the assembly processes, offers an extraordinary opportunity for the development of data-driven robust optimization models and algorithms to many industrial engineering optimization problems. The goal of this PhD research work is to develop innovative data-driven robust optimization models as well as their corresponding solution algorithms for planning and scheduling problems in flexible manufacturing systems. In particular, we will investigate flexible assembly systems characterized by a large number of variants produced in low-volume and involving manual as well as automated assembly tasks. The research work will be carried out in close collaboration with industry. This will grant us access to data and a number challenging industrial use cases.

PhD position summary/title: Phd in Stochastic Optimization Models for Allocation of Quality Inspection in Flexible Assembly: ISyE
The goal of the PhD is to develop innovative cost optimization models that take into account detailed knowledge of the assembly process such cost of rework, parts and operator time, specifications, warranty cost, bill of materials, but also knowledge of different eligible tests. The outcome is a data-driven decision support system for optimal inspection allocation in the assembly environment. The PhD work will in particular also focus on the robustness of the solutions obtained by the model to (unforeseen) changes in the production schedule. This is highly relevant in high-mix low-volume assembly where production runs are short and change frequently in nature. The inspection solutions must be flexible enough to deal with this variability.

About Ghent University, Belgium –Official Website
Ghent University is a public research university located in Ghent, Belgium. It was established in 1817 by King William I of the Netherlands. After the Belgian revolution of 1830, the newly formed Belgian state began to administer the university. In 1930, the university became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium, whereas French had previously been the standard academic language in what was Université de Gand. In 1991, it was granted major autonomy and changed its name accordingly from State University of Ghent (Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Gent, abbreviated as RUG) to its current designation.
In contrast to the Catholic University of Leuven or the Free University of Brussels, UGent considers itself a pluralist university in a special sense, i.e. not connected to any particular religion or political ideology. Its motto Inter Utrumque (‘In Between Both Extremes’), on the coat of arms, suggests the acquisition of wisdom and science comes only in an atmosphere of peace, when the institution is fully supported by the monarchy and fatherland.
Ghent University is one of the biggest Flemish universities, consisting of 44,000 students and 9,000 staff members. The University also supports the University Library and the University Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals in Belgium. It is one of the greatest beneficiaries of funding from the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). Ghent University consistently rates among the top 100 universities in the world.
