21 Postdoctoral Fellowship at Inria, France

This postdoctoral position is funded in the framework of the PEPR “5G et reseaux du futur” of the national recovery plan, in the collaborative project FUNDS lead by Prof François Baccelli. The student will be supervised by Jean-Marie Gorce, professor at INSA Lyon and affiliated to Inria Lyon, in collaboration with François Baccelli. The key objective of the position is to elaborate on a new theoretical framework to design new communication rules in wireless multi-user context with (almost) deterministic delay and reliability guarantees. This objective is required to sustain the development of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications in the context of robotics, industry4.0 and vehicular communications.  The candidate will primarily work on elaborating a theoretical framework relying upon information theory, queuing theory and stochastic network calculus.

The Inria centre at Université Côte d’Azur was established in 1983 in Sophia Antipolis. It has developed along with Université Côte d’Azur on the Sophia Antipolis and Nice sites. It also has a branch in Montpellier, where it is developing alongside Montpellier University.

The postdoc contract will have a duration of 12 to 24 months. The default start date is November 1st, 2023 and not later than January, 1st 2024. The postdoctoral fellow will be recruited by one of the Inria Centres in France but it is recommended that the time is shared between France and the partner’s country (please note that the postdoctoral fellow has to start his/her contract being in France and that the visits have to respect Inria rules for missions). This postdoc will be conducted within the Inria associated team MUSCULAR which is a partnership between the Cronos team of the Inria Centre at Université Côte d’Azur and Dario Farina’s team at Imperial College London. The objective of MUSCULAR is to increase the bandwidth between the EEG and EMG communities and promote a mutually beneficial exchange of methodology and knowledge.

The Centre Inria de l’Université de Grenoble groups together almost 600 people in 22 research teams and 7 research support departments. Staff is present on three campuses in Grenoble, in close collaboration with other research and higher education institutions (Université Grenoble Alpes, CNRS, CEA, INRAE, …), but also with key economic players in the area. The Centre Inria de l’Université Grenoble Alpe is active in the fields of high-performance computing, verification and embedded systems, modeling of the environment at multiple levels, and data science and artificial intelligence. The center is a top-level scientific institute with an extensive network of international collaborations in Europe and the rest of the world.

The Inria FUN research group investigates solutions to enhance programmability, adaptability and reachability of FUN (Future Ubiquitous Networks ) composed of RFID, wireless sensor and robot networks. Limited resources, high mobility and high security level evolving in distrusted environments characterize the objects that compose FUN. They communicate in a wireless way. To be operational and efficient, such networks have to follow some self-organizing rules. Indeed, components of FUN have to be able in a distributed and energy-efficient way to discover the network, self-deploy, communicate, self-structure in spite of their hardware constraints while adapting the environment in which they evolve. The ArticuLabo research group at Inria Paris is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join a multidisciplinary team developing an exciting and ambitious research program at the intersection of social neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Specificially we are developing ways to use hyperscanning techniques to better understand how children in middle childhood use language and nonverbal behavior to build and manage social relationships with peers. The results inform the design of innovative embodied conversational agents (ECAs) capable of helping children learn.  Recently, an ever-growing number of neuroimaging studies have shown that specific brain areas, such as the temporo-parietal junction, superior temporal sulcus, and pre-frontal cortex show evidence of synchronization (i.e., inter-brain or neural synchrony) in people who are engaged in joint social interactions This observation results from the use of hyperscanning, a technique that allows the simultaneous recording of several brains

Extreme value theory is a branch of probability and statistics dealing specifically with the behaviour of a probability distribution in its tails. More precisely, it focuses on the asymptotic behaviour of the largest, or lowest, observations in a collection of random observations from the same distribution. In extreme value statistics, the main problems are typically the estimation of the extreme value index and extreme quantiles associated to a random variable of interest Y with unknown underlying distribution. The extreme value index drives the behaviour of the distribution of Y in its right tail. We refer to [1,2] for a general account on extreme value statistics.

ACENTAURI est une équipe de robotique dirigée par Ezio MALIS qui étudie et développe des robots autonomes et intelligents qui collaborent entre eux pour réaliser des tâches difficiles dans des environnements complexes et dynamiques. L’équipe aborde les problèmes de perception, de décision et de contrôle pour la collaboration multi-robot en proposant une approche hybride originale de l’intelligence artificielle basée sur les modèles et les données et en étudiant des algorithmes efficaces. L’équipe se concentre sur les applications telles que les systèmes multi-robot rondiers pour la surveillance de l’environnement et le transport de personnes et de marchandises. Dans ces applications, plusieurs robots partagent des informations multi-capteurs provenant éventuellement de l’infrastructure. L’efficacité des approches proposées est démontrée sur des systèmes robotiques réels comme les voitures et les drones en collaboration avec des partenaires industriels.

Ce postdoctorat a pour cadre le projet H2020 CrowdDNA (http://www.crowddna.eu) qui s’intéresse aux foules denses et aux interactions physiques entre individus dans la foule afin d’en prévenir les dangers. Le projet CrowdDNA, coordonné par Inria, implique 7 partenaires en Espagne, en Allemagne, en France et au Royaume-Uni. Le projet mêle des activités d’études, de modélisation et de simulation de foules et vise à développer des technologies d’analyse de mouvements de foule pour l’assistance à la gestion d’événements de masse. Le contexte scientifique du projet est l’étude et la modélisation de foule dense. La foule dense se caractérise par des niveaux de densité qui impliquent des contacts entre individus. Les forces échangées au sein des foules denses posent des dangers potentiels pour les individus avec des risques de chute ou d’étouffement [1,2]. Différents des interactions sociales qui sont distantes [3], l’étude des interactions physiques requierent des approches spécifiques pour l’analyse [4,5] ou pour la modélisation et la simulation [6,7,8]. Des travaux récents suggèrent également que les foules denses dans une situation de danger potentiel exhibent des traits caractéristiques de comportement [9,10]. Le postdoctorat proposé se situe dans la continuité de ces derniers travaux. Par des activités de modélisation et d’analyse au sein du projet dans son ensemble, ainsi que des campagnes de terrain (voir objectif ci-dessous), nous essayons de mettre au point ces technologies de detection de caractéristiques de foules dangereuses.

A two-year postdoctoral position is available in team BEAGLE at Inria Lyon. At BEAGLE, we study cellular systems through computational models and bioinformatic data analysis, in order to better understand their organizational principles. In our team, we value working together, being innovative, and providing opportunities for professional and personal growth. The position is within the framework of project CLAIRE, a collaboration between Inria’s team BEAGLE and research groups at the Cancer Research Center of Lyon (CRCL). The overall goal of this project is to better understand the emergence of drug tolerance during treatment of lung cancer. You will be advised by Anton Crombach (Inria) and Sandra Ortiz-Cuaran (CRCL), whilst working together with other members of the project. You will be located at Inria’s La Doua site and regularly visit the CRCL.

The Inria centre at Université Côte d’Azur includes 37 research teams and 8 support services. The centre’s staff (about 500 people) is made up of scientists of different nationalities, engineers, technicians and administrative staff. The teams are mainly located on the university campuses of Sophia Antipolis and Nice as well as Montpellier, in close collaboration with research and higher education laboratories and establishments (Université Côte d’Azur, CNRS, INRAE, INSERM …), but also with the regiona economic players. With a presence in the fields of computational neuroscience and biology, data science and modeling, software engineering and certification, as well as collaborative robotics, the Inria Centre at Université Côte d’Azur  is a major player in terms of scientific excellence through its results and collaborations at both European and international levels.

The present postdoctoral project is part of a collaborative project between the Atlantis project-team from the Inria Research Center at Université Côte d’Azur,  (2) Thales R&T in Palaiseau, France, which is the main multidisciplinary research center of Thales group, and one of the main world players in professional electronics (3) and Nanoe in Ballainvilliers, France, whcih is  a SME (Small and Medium Entreprise) specialized  in development and fabrication of innovative ceramic materials for the industries. Atlantis is  a joint project-team  between Inria and  the Jean-Alexandre Dieudonné Mathematics Laboratory at  Université Côte d’Azur. The team  gathers applied mathematicians and  computational scientists who are collaboratively undertaking  research activities aiming at the design, analysis, development and  application of innovative numerical methods for systems of  partial differential equations (PDEs) modelling nanoscale light-matter interaction problems. In this context, the team is  developing  the   DIOGENeS  [https://diogenes.inria.fr/]  software suite,  which  implements  several Discontinuous  Galerkin  (DG)  type methods tailored to the systems  of time- and frequency-domain Maxwell equations  possibly coupled  to  differential  equations modeling  the behaviour of propagation  media at optical frequencies.  DIOGENeS is a unique  numerical   framework  leveraging   the  capabilities   of  DG techniques  for  the simulation  of  multiscale  problems relevant  to nanophotonics and nanoplasmonics.
