We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic Research Assistant / Research Associate to join the CAPKR at the University of Manchester. The successful candidate will become a member of the CAPKR research team and be fully involved in a project entitled “Defining Local Disposition Beyond What is Known for Small Molecules to Assist Building PBPK Framework for Oligonucleotide and Antibody Drug Conjugate Modalities”.  Small molecules have dominated drug therapy for over a century, but recent decades have seen the development of increasingly larger and more sophisticated drug types.  These include both protein or peptide based drugs, such as antibodies, and oligonucleotides.  The distribution of such molecules within cells, such as liver cells, is not well-understood.  Oligonucleotides, for example, are known to distribute in lysosomes, cytoplasm and nucleolus.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Bioinformatician to collaborate with scientists and clinicians to provide knowledge and expertise in the analysis and interpretation of data from translational radiotherapy-related research. One of the goals of the MCRC Radiotherapy Related Research (RRR) group is to personalise radiotherapy (field, dose, fractionation, use of chemotherapy) by integrating tumour, patient and treatment information to optimise radiotherapy delivery for individual patients and improve outcomes over conventional treatments that approach all patients in a similar manner. A significant proportion of the work will focus on developing an improved understanding of the molecular basis of patient response to radiotherapy, and on decoding the human transcriptomes/ genomes/ proteins associated with the response of normal and malignant cells to radiotherapy.

Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) include conditions affecting the skin, joints, and/or the gut. They lead to a big burden on the body and mind for 7% of people globally. New high-cost treatments that target inflammation-controlling proteins have transformed the lives of people with IMIDs. When deciding whether to take these treatments, patients and their doctors rely on evidence. This includes information from randomized controlled trials (RCTs), where two or more different medicines, of which one may be a dummy medicine, are given randomly to groups of participants. There are also observational studies, where large groups of people are observed in routine settings without being allocated medicines. Observational studies are representative, large, and relatively cheap but can be biased. RCTs are more reliable but people from underserved populations, such as people from lower socio-economic backgrounds, are often excluded or under-represented. Only using evidence from RCTs to guide treatment decisions could introduce privileges or disadvantages for different groups of people, leading to an overestimation of benefits and an underestimation of risks overall.

Working within Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences) under the supervision of Professor Sophie Nixon, the post is funded by the BBSRC strategic Longer and Larger grant “Rules of life in CO2-driven microbial communities: Microbiome engineering for a Net Zero future”.

This project is led by Professor Sophie Nixon at the University of Manchester, in collaboration with the Earlham Institute. In this project we are interrogating the rules that govern microbiomes that inhabit terrestrial hot springs.

The long-held tradition of studying microorganisms in isolation has, until recently, obscured the fact that microbial life exists as interdependent multi-species assemblages. Despite the profound impact microbial communities have on their environment and the technological advances in microbial genomics in recent years, the rules that govern the structure, function and stability of microbial communities are complex and only partially understood. Although a plethora of mechanisms that influence microbial communities have been identified, from metabolic priming, to inter- and intraspecific metabolic signalling and even direct antibiosis, holistic understanding has yet to be achieved in any microbial system. In this project we will develop a novel experimental system that is complex yet tractable, enabling rich, coordinated multi-omics analysis coupled with computational modelling to deliver deep mechanistic insight. We will apply a cutting-edge toolbox of experimental, analytical, and computational approaches to reveal the rules of life in this system that will serve as a blueprint to apply to any microbiome.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated research associate looking for a challenging opportunity in control system designs for renewable energy systems, who can communicate and work collaboratively with the industrial and academic partners in the consortium. The applicant will have a PhD in a relevant degree and/or relevant equivalent experience. Relevant theoretical and practical experience of modelling and controller design will be essential.

Synthetic biology and metabolic engineering have and will continue to develop new biosynthetic routes and hosts for the production of chemicals, biopolymers and fuels. As such we can reduce our reliance on petrol-chemical based feedstocks by providing new sustainable production routes for drop in chemicals and develop new chemical entities with advanced properties. Key to the success of the engineering biology approaches, is the ability to sense and regulate the associated molecules and genes/pathways. This post will develop genetic tools, based on allosteric transcription factors and to employ these tools to fine tune the expression/metabolic flux in suitable production host.

We are recruiting a Research Associate to develop gene therapy for urofacial syndrome, a devastating genetic disease that affects autonomic function of the lower urinary tract.

You will join the Roberts research group, leading an MRC funded research project to run pre-clinical gene therapy trials in mouse models of urofacial syndrome. In this exciting interdisciplinary project you will undertake a range of activities including: the design of novel therapeutic AAV vectors, whole tissue physiology and imaging of treated organs, and single cell transcriptomic analysis of autonomic neurons and smooth muscle.

A Research Associate is required in the Department of Chemistry, University of Manchester to synthesise and characterise organic materials as part of the BBSRC Prosperity Partnership SUCCEED. The project focusses on the development of new routes from bioderived feedstocks to commodity chemicals and sustainable fuels.  This post will involve collaboration with researchers within the University and in the company partner. Applicants should have a strong track record in organic synthesis with experience in process, continuous or scale up chemistry.

A postdoctoral position is available for 2 years, with a possible extension of another 2 years, through UKRI funding underwriting a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant. This position is open to an outstanding and ambitious computational scientist with an interest in the design of machine learning potentials for biomolecular simulation.

By its novel architecture, the fully in-house developed force field FFLUX aims to make a step change in the reliability of modelling of peptides/proteins in aqueous solution.

The machine learning method Gaussian Process Regression is used to create knowledgeable quantum atoms that accurately predict energies and multipole moments.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate in 2D nanomaterials for the delivery of therapies to patient-derived/advanced in vitro models post within the Nano-Cell Biology Lab in the Centre for Nanotechnology in Medicine at the University of Manchester. 

You will contribute to the BRC-funded project focusing on the use of nanomaterials in the treatment of Lysosomal Storage Diseases by exploring interactions of nanomaterials with cells using various in vitro techniques. Demonstrable previous experience in stem/cell biology research using a variety of advanced cell culture models (working with primary co/tri-cultures and/or stem cells and organoids), as well as extensive experience in experimental research using nanomaterials are essential. Understanding interactions of nanomaterials with cells is mandatory. Advanced skills in standard biological research techniques (e.g. confocal microscopy, flow cytometry) are required. Mastering bioinformatics tools (such as Ingenuity Pathway Analysis software) is advantageous. You should be able to interact effectively with researchers from a range of backgrounds, in order to contribute to an interdisciplinary programme of research.

We are seeking to recruit a Research Associate to undertake research and project management duties for the 5-year GENERATE project (an ERC/UKRI Consolidator grant, see https://www.manchester.ac.uk/about/news/ukri-award-the-university-of-manchester-17m-to-investigate-gendered-energy-inequalities/).

The appointee will be tasked with ensuring that the project is progressing in line with anticipated schedules and deliverables, while liaising with relevant partners and stakeholders. The Research Associate will undertake, in the main, qualitative data collection and analysis (desk-based document collection, interviews, ethnographies, governance mapping) on gender and energy inequalities, with a focus on the Western Balkans. The post holder will also be tasked with preparing and writing project reports, peer-reviewed publications and follow-on funding applications, in addition to undertaking non-academic dissemination activities linked to the project.

We are seeking an ambitious and proactive Research Associate to be part of a multidisciplinary team, focusing on image-based multiphysics modelling of cardiovascular fluid dynamics and device-tissue interactions. The successful candidate will utilise clinical and experimental data to pioneer novel generative AI and geometric deep learning approaches to create synthetic virtual patient cohorts from multimodal data. The vision of the Prob_AI hub is to develop a world-leading, diverse and UK-wide research pro- gramme in probabilistic AI. SuCCEED is a BBSRC funded Prosperity Partnership multi-million project between The University of Manchester and Shell. Commodity chemicals are produced on a global scale and normally derived from finite geological sources. The Shell-UoM partnership seeks to re-imagine bulk chemicals manufacturing through industrial biotechnology, producing renewable chemical products from sustainable feedstocks and providing alternative scalable bioproduction routes to contribute to the global efforts to reduce CO2 emissions.

We are looking for a post-doctoral research assistant to join our interdisciplinary team, consisting of 8 PDRAs (post-doctoral research associates) and 5 PhDs associated with 8 group leaders at UoM. You will be supported to combine your individual talents with the wider team’s breadth of skills and will be based in the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB) at the University of Manchester which is a cross-disciplinary research Centre that brings together diverse expertise including: molecular biology; chemistry; biochemical-engineering; materials science; synthetic biology; analytics and computer science. You will work closely with one of the MIB based SuCCEED investigators Prof. David Leys, Prof. Anthony Green, Dr. Niel Dixon and Prof. Nigel Scrutton and contribute to experimental research in the respective group.
