The Zhang Lab at Scripps Research is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Associate to develop innovative imaging tools aimed at advancing our understanding of tissue function across spatial and temporal scales.

As a newly established lab in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, the Zhang lab studies how cells organize, interact, and maintain homeostasis within their native environments, and how these dynamics are altered in aging and disease using a combination of cutting-edge imaging technologies and sophisticated computational tools. Our primary focus is on developing spatial multi-omics tools that enable high-resolution, genomic-scale profiling of cells in situ, capturing cellular states and interactions at the single-cell level across various time scales. Our long-term goal is to harness these insights to inform approaches in precision medicine, contributing to advancements in tissue regeneration, disease intervention, and cell-based therapies.

A Postdoctoral Associate position is immediately available in the Immunology and Microbiology Department in the laboratory of Dr. Sumit K. Chanda as part of a multi-disciplinary program focused on using a systems-level understanding of innate immunity, immunology, and virus-host interactions. The successful candidate will join a team investigating mechanisms of virus-host interactions, with a focus on utilizing chemical biology and chemoproteomics tools to identify novel host-pathogen interactions that underlie viral infection and to develop novel therapeutic strategies to facilitate pandemic preparedness. Studies will focus on RNA viruses of pandemic potential, including influenza virus, coronavirus, flaviviruses, and filoviruses. The person filling this position will play an important intellectual, technical, and scientific role in leading projects. An NIH-funded Postdoctoral Associate position is available for a motivated individual to join the lab of Professor Pietro Paolo Sanna in the Department of Immunology & Microbiology at Scripps Research to study the neurobiology of substance abuse and neuroAIDS. This dynamic multidisciplinary research team uses in vivo, biochemical and genomic strategies including gene expression analysis by single cell RNA-Sequencing, electrophysiology and the establishment of neuronal cell types from induced pluripotent stem cells and fibroblasts.

Three Postdoctoral Associate positions are available for motivated individuals to join a dynamic multidisciplinary research team at Scripps Research to study neuroimmunological and neuroinflammatory aspects of substance abuse, neuroAIDS, Alzheimer’s, and their detrimental interactions, with in vivo, biochemical and genomic strategies including gene expression analysis by single cell RNA-Sequencing and ATAC-Seq, viral vectors and related techniques.

Successful candidates will be creative, highly motivated, able to work semi-independently, and have a strong background in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, transcriptomics, with an emphasis on gene network regulation. Candidates possessing a strong background in computer science, machine learning, physics, mathematics combined with a good understanding of molecular biology will be preferred. The Lippi lab at Scripps Research seeks a Postdoctoral Associate as part of a growing team of investigators studying how a class of non-coding RNAs, called microRNAs, instructs brain development. The Briney Lab is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to join us in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research. We use a combination of advanced single cell multi-omics techniques and sophisticated computational tools to deeply explore the antibody response to emerging infectious diseases. We are looking for a highly motivated individual who will contribute to antibody discovery projects against a variety of viral targets, including Lassa, Ebola, HIV, SARS-CoV-2, influenza and others. The antibodies we discover have potential use as therapeutics or as templates for rational vaccine development. 

Because we tightly integrate wet-lab experimentation and bioinformatics into all of our projects, a substantial portion of your time will be spent using and developing computational tools for analyzing vast single cell multi-omics datasets. Programming experience is a major plus (we primarily use Python), but don’t worry if you’re new to programming — we’re happy to teach you! Skilled experimental immunologists with an interest in computational immunology are always welcome.

A Postdoctoral Associate position is available in the Lotz laboratory at Scripps Research, La Jolla, California. The Lotz lab focuses on the discovery of molecular and cellular mechanisms that are dysfunctional in spine and joint diseases and other musculoskeletal conditions during early stages of pathogenesis to create a foundation for therapeutic interventions to prevent disease onset and slow progression.

Discovery is pursued by the application of multiple Omics technologies (bulk RNA-sequencing, single cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics). Genes of interest are tested for function using in vitro models and rodent models of arthritis and intervertebral disc degeneration.

The Department of Neuroscience at Scripps Research has open Postdoctoral Associate positions in the new, well-funded lab of Dr. Chen Ran. We are interested in understanding, on the cellular, circuit, and systems levels, the neural basis of interoception, i.e., how the brain receives signals from the visceral organs within the body to generate our internal senses. Combining state-of-the-art in vivo functional imaging, electrophysiological recordings, mouse genetics, neuronal activity manipulation, animal behavior, and computational approaches, our lab seeks to unravel how the nervous system detects mechanical, chemical, and thermal stimuli from the periphery to synthesize our internal sensations, including satiety, hunger, nausea, hypoxia, and visceral pain. The Sanner lab is part of the Center for Computational Structural Biology (CCSB) at Scripps where we develop cutting edge software for modeling, analyzing, and visualizing molecular interactions which we make available to the worldwide research community. Under the AutoDock Suite umbrella of automated docking software tools we have recently developed AutoDock CrankPep (ADCP in short), a docking engine specifically designed for ab-initio docking of fully flexible peptides. We are seeking a highly motivated and talented individual interested in method development in automated docking and their application to biomedically relevant drug discovery efforts. The successful candidate will join a lab integrated in the highly collaborative CCSB center and continue developing the ADCP software and apply it to biomedically relevant targets.

The Dr. Gallay lab in the Immunology and Microbiology department is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate researcher to discover new therapeutic candidates that can effectively combat SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 in both mice and in vitro models.

While the development of effective vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, vaccine hesitancy in developed countries and vast shortages in low-to-middle income countries are jeopardizing efforts to curb the pandemic. It is estimated that significant proportions of the population are unlikely to be vaccinated until 2030, at the earliest. Consequently, the conditions are ripe for continued spike mutation and evolution to increasingly transmissible strains causing more severe illness. Some of these emerging strains should challenge the protection of current vaccines. Therefore, there is an urgent need to identify new therapies to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection and prevent COVID-19.

We are seeking a motivated postdoctoral associate in the Dr. Srinivasan lab to work in the area of neural the gut-brain axis and neuroendocrine biology of lipid metabolism. It is now well-established that communication between the brain and the gut, the so-called gut-brain axis, regulates important aspects of behavior and metabolism in many species. However, the salient mechanisms and molecular features of gut-brain communication remain mysterious. In our lab, we utilize C. elegans as a model system for our discovery studies of gut-brain communication, in which we utilize cutting-edge technologies to measure dynamic neural and metabolic activity in living animals. Such cell-based readouts are coupled with changes in behavior and metabolism, to uncover novel pathways all the way from molecules to whole-animal biology.  

Our work has uncovered a novel G protein coupled receptor (GPCR) with deep conservation in mice and in humans. We have developed a mouse model for this novel GPCR, which we wish to exploit for the development of novel therapeutics in gut-related and systemic disorders of metabolism. We seek a postdoctoral candidate who has the skills, drive and collaborative spirit to spearhead an exciting project with the potential for direct translation from bench to clinic. 

A Postdoctoral Associate position is available in Dr. Lisa Racki’s Lab at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA (rackilab.org) for a highly motivated scientist interested in biomolecular condensates and bacterial chromatin. Specifically, this project will investigate the role of polyphosphate condensates in the organization, structure, and dynamics of bacterial chromatin in the opportunistic human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This project uses an integrative approach to study bacterial chromatin structure at multiple scales, from in vitro biochemistry, to quantitative single cell timelapse imaging using microfluidics, to macroscopic studies of biofilm communities.
