Postdoctoral position summary/title: Fatty acid metabolism

A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Hanaa Hariri to study molecular and cellular mechanisms of fatty acid metabolism. Fatty acids are essential molecules for a broad range of cellular processes including lipid signaling, biological membranes, and energy metabolism; however, they are toxic to cells when present in excess. Dysregulation of fatty acid metabolism is a hallmark of devastating chronic human pathologies including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The Hariri lab is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that spatially regulate fatty acid flux at organelle contact sites.

Postdoctoral position summary/title: Bone-conduction hearing mechanisms

The laboratory of Xiying Guan is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to work on bone-conduction hearing mechanisms. During bone-conduction stimulation, the skull vibration simultaneously stimulates the middle and the inner ear, challenging our ability to understand the underlying mechanisms. We investigate how sound pressures are generated in the cochlea and how the cochlear traveling waves are formed in bone-conduction. We perform intracochlear measurements of sound pressures and vibrations in human cadaveric ears. We develop circuit network models and finite element models to assist data analysis.

Postdoctoral position summary/title: Gene expression regulation.

A postdoctoral position is available to study mechanisms that regulate gene expression during human development and in response to endogenous and exogenous compounds. Efforts are currently focused on understanding the mechanisms regulating expression of the cytosolic sulfotransferase class of metabolizing enzymes during human liver development. Approaches will include the use of advanced cell culture models (e.g., stem cell differentiation models) and molecular technologies (e.g., RNA-seq and ATAC-seq) to understand the changes in chromatin accessibility and transcriptional regulator activity that control gene expression during cell differentiation.

Postdoctoral position summary/title: How common consumer product chemicals interfere with the endocrine system.

A new laboratory is now open at Wayne State that seeks to evaluate how common consumer product chemicals (flame retardants, phthalates, etc.) and their mixtures may interfere with the body’s endocrine system following exposure. The Kassotis Lab is interested in how exposure to these chemicals (and mixtures of these chemicals) may disrupt metabolic health and contribute to or exacerbate obesity and other metabolic disorders. We will pursue these aims through mechanistic cell culture experiments and medium-throughput zebrafish exposure and imaging experiments. Our ultimate goals are to assess potential human health effects following exposure to diverse environmental contaminants and mixtures.
