PhD position summary/title: PhD Effectiveness of biodiversity conservation and participatory surveillance in reducing zoonotic disease risk
Biodiversity loss and emerging zoonotic diseases are two global crises that are both related to human disturbance of natural systems. Loss of biodiversity disrupts complex ecological interactions that could potentially trigger pathogen spillover from wildlife reservoir hosts to livestock and humans. The economic impacts of spillover diseases are paramount as the recent Ebola and COVID-19 crisis have shown. Biodiversity conservation has been promoted as an effective measure to control zoonotic diseases with a wildlife origin, yet few studies have tested this strategy. The first aim of this project is therefore to test whether behavioural and economic interventions aimed at conserving biodiversity are effective in reducing zoonotic disease risk.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate “Adaptive lifestyle interventions targeting behavior change of patients with different holistic profiles” in the RECENTRE project
In the RECENTRE project, you will investigate how to move from holistic patient profiles to recommendations for adaptive lifestyle interventions, considering the processes driving behavior change, engagement, costs, effectiveness, scalability and feasibility. There is an urgency to expand our capacities to tailor interventions to people and contexts, as many health issues, such as obesity and cancer, are highly complex (i.e., dynamic, multicausal, and manifest idiosyncratically). This calls for interventions that are individualized, contextualized and timely. The chair group Consumption and Healthy Lifestyles will use optimization trials (e.g., SMART design via the MOST research framework) to devise decision rules that specify whether, how, and when to alter the intensity, type, or delivery of treatment at critical clinical decisions during the life course, making use of the continuously collected sensor data from the patients. The focus of the PhD is on testing optimized adaptive interventions using innovative research designs, such as micro-randomized trials and n-of-1 trials.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position – Nature inclusive farming for farmland birds
Farmland birds in Europe have been declining rapidly over the last decades, mainly due to agricultural intensification and specialisation. The agricultural landscape, once consisting of a diverse set of crops and landscape elements, now comprises large scale fields with few crops and landscape elements. Especially ground-nesting birds of open landscapes, such as species like Eurasian skylark (Alauda arvensis) and western yellow wagtail (Motacilla flava) are in need of creative solutions because they breed and forage in the crops themselves. Nature-inclusive farming practices, such as strip cropping and plant-based protein crops, combined with agri-environment schemes may provide such a solution. In this government-funded project led by Wageningen Environmental Research, Wageningen University, and University of Groningen, we will study the combined effects of nature-inclusive farming with strip cropping, and agri-environment schemes on farmland birds. More specifically, the PhD candidate will study how the implementation of these agricultural practices affects their reproductive success, how they use the landscape, and ultimately trends of farmland birds.
