(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Research Associate for the Project ”Impacts of mosses and lichens on permafrost soil carbon dynamics since the last glacial (MoLiCarb)” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG

The MoLiCarb project aims to assess the role of vegetation, in particular mosses and lichens, for carbon content of permafrost soils at high latitudes and associated climate impacts. Effects of mosses and lichens on the soil carbon balance and their consequences for climate are currently poorly represented in Earth System Models (ESMs), although they maybe highly relevant, particularly at high latitudes (carbon input, soil cooling). Permafrost soil carbon in these regions is of great importance for future climate, since thawing of the soil will likely lead to strong emissions of CO2 and a positive feedback on global warming. More advanced models of moss and lichen effects on high-latitude ecosystem carbon fluxes that can inform ESMs are therefore urgently needed. While observational data for current climatic conditions are usually not sufficient to constrain model projections on coupled vegetation-soil carbon dynamics at high-latitudes for the next decades, sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) may help to quantify the long-term relationships between vegetation, climate, and soil carbon and thus reduce this uncertainty substantially.

In MoLiCarb, we will address the following questions: 1) How strong is the effect of mosses and lichens on today’s dynamics of soil carbon in permafrost regions? 2) To what extent did mosses and lichens contribute to build-up of soil carbon since the last glacial maximum? 3) How will mosses and lichens affect permafrost carbon release in the next decades?

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “PalMod Phase III” Examining the response of the ocean carbon storage and biogeochemical cycles to abrupt events during the last deglaciation § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

The Project PalMod Phase III is a project between Universität Hamburg and several other German research institutes and universities, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF), to understand Earth system dynamics and variability during the last glacial cycle.

Model simulations in PalMod Phase II with cryosphere-ocean-atmosphere interactions in MPI-ESM have captured some features of the abrupt events of the last deglaciation (Heinrich events, Bølling-Allerød warming, Younger Dryas). Studies of marine sediments show that such abrupt events profoundly affect ocean biogeochemistry. Nevertheless, the cascades of changes in oceanic biogeochemistry have not yet been examined using comprehensive Earth system models with interactive carbon cycle. The planned work will address this knowledge gap. The project will focus on examining the response of the ocean carbon storage and biogeochemical cycles to abrupt events in MPI-ESM projections spanning the last deglaciation and future climate change scenarios with the goal to improve our quantitative understanding of the observed cascades of change.

(14) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate “Cluster of Excellence ‚CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter‘ – Theory of hidden phases close to the Mott transition” § 28 Subsection 1+3 HmbHG

Description of research project: Mott insulators provide a unique platform to achieve light-induced control over functionalities in complex materials on ultrafast timescales. A particularly elusive goal is the understanding of “hidden phases”, i.e., non-equilibrium states that are long lived or even metastable, but nevertheless can be reached only with ultrashort excitations. A promising regime to search for interesting hidden states is the vicinity of the Mott transition, where exotic phases such as unconventional superconductivity can emerge from the interaction of (photo-)doped electrons with local spin and orbital moments. In many materials, the Mott transition is concomitant with a lattice distortion. This fact, which is rarely taken into account in the theoretical modelling of the out of equilibrium dynamics, can potentially lead to metastability. In this project, we aim to combine a theoretical treatment of correlated electrons based on non-equilibrium dynamical mean field theory with a description of the lattice dynamics, to explore non-thermal free energy landscapes of paradigmatic correlated systems (such as Cr-doped V2O3), and thus potentially reveal pathways for the switching to metastable states.

(15) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate “Cluster of Excellence ‚CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter‘- Dissipative engineering of quantum materials via cavity QED” § 28 Subsection 1+3 HmbHG

Description of research project: Utilizing cavities to manipulate the electromagnetic field and its coupling to matter is a promising approach to control the properties of complex materials, also known as quantum materials. A recent experiment revealed a significant cavity-induced shift in the transition temperature of the charge-density wave in the two-dimensional material 1T-TaS2. One possible explanation is that a stationary non-equilibrium state is formed through the selective coupling of the system to specific modes of the electromagnetic field. The goal of this project is to further theoretically explore the possibilities of such non-equilibrium phases, which have no counterpart in the equilibrium phase diagram, also in collaboration with experimental research groups. Modern numerical techniques, including Keldysh formalism, Quantum Monte Carlo, and Tensor Networks, will be employed for the investigation of these systems.

The position is part of the research group “Biogeochemical processes and Air-sea exchange in the Sea-Surface microlayer (BASS)” funded by the German Research Foundation. The overall goal of BASS is to investigate the importance of the sea-surface microlayer (SML) as a biogeo- and photochemical reactor, and how its reactivity affects ocean-atmosphere interactions. Eight subprojects are collaborating in joint field campaigns in the open North Sea, in a joint mesocosm study at the Sea-Surface Facility of the University of Oldenburg, and in joint experiments at the University of Hamburg Wind-Wave Tank. BASS combines interdisciplinary expertise, advanced technologies for millimeter-scale observations, core infrastructures for controlled experiments, and state-of-the-art analytical facilities at the molecular levels.

The specific goal of subproject 2.2 is to understand the complex, small-scale feedback mechanisms between wind, waves, and sea-surface monolayers, to allow improved analyses of other mechanisms driving fluxes and exchange processes across the SML. In order to achieve this goal, a unique, novel, wind-wave-surfactant measurement system has been developed for the wind-wave tank, with the ability of measuring simultaneously coupled air-water boundary layer dynamics, the evolution of millimeter-scale surface roughness features, and the influence of surfactants thereon. The system comprises a unique combination of state-of-the-art video, laser, digital imaging, and radar technologies, capable of being combined with the SML measurement systems of BASS partners, and having the potential to provide measurements in more complex conditions in a planned second phase of BASS.
