Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in evolutionary ecology

This postdoctoral position forms part of the Human Frontier Science Program project “Bridging robotics and buzz pollination: Reconstructing a bee’s buzz through microrobotics” (2022-2025). It represents a collaboration between the research groups of Dr. Mario Vallejo-Marin (Uppsala University, Sweden) and Dr. Noah Jafferis (University of Massachussetts, Lowe, U.S.A.). Our project exploits new advances in micro-robotics to study a fundamental interaction between bees and flowers during buzz pollination, a phenomenon that includes thousands of plant and bee species around the world. During buzz pollination, bees from as many as 11,000 species use their indirect flight muscles to generate vibrations to shake pollen out of flowers. Buzz pollination captures one of the most striking and widespread examples of floral convergence, occurring in more than 20% of flowering plant families, including crops, such as tomatoes, which depend on vibration-producing bees.

(17) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Up to 5 Post-Doctoral Positions in Computer Science and Engineering

The functionality as well as economical value of many industrial systems and products, for instance cars, airplanes, drones/blimps, and medical devices, is today defined and realized by embedded software. A key challenge in the design of such systems is the ability to update software (to add new features, to customize a system, or to fix security vulnerabilities) without compromising the overall safety and security. This is extremely difficult due to the complexity of today’s software and hardware architectures, with the result that safe system updates after deployment become nearly impossible. Uppsala University has two new exciting projects about updatable, next-generation embedded systems: the ERC project CUSTOMER, and the Wallenberg project UPDATE. The projects bring together world-leading research groups in several areas related to Embedded Systems Design and Implementation: the Uppsala Networked Objects group, the Verification and Testing group, and the Embedded Systems. Current senior members of the projects include: Susanne Graf, Bengt Jonsson, Luca Mottola, Philipp Ruemmer, Thiemo Voigt and Wang Yi.

(22) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: One researcher in software principle and technique for on-body sensory signal processing

Human body can be equipped with wearable electronic devices that generate, process and transmit data in real time to monitor health conditions and perform neurosurgical treatment for patients, for instance, suffering from Parkinson’s disease (PD), essential tremor, dystonia and other neurological conditions. One challenge to realizing such a system is to create a software toolkit for on-body secure, low-power processing and computing signals generated by sensors and actuators. The research assigned to the position has a focus on developing machine learning (ML) modules to process tactile and tremor signals generated by neuromorphic electronic skin (ne-skin). The ne-skin converts analogue tactile signals into electrical pulses, thus encoding the mechanical signals in spike timing. ML algorithms based on artificial neural networks (ANN) will be developed for processing data streams from the ne-skin. The ML algorithms mimic the computation function in the afferent nervous system prior to the brain. To support low-power and high-efficiency signal processing, ML based on spiking neural networks (SNN) will be developed to achieve local, low power signal processing on signals about tremor and tactility.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website

Uppsala University  is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.

The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.

Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.

Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
