Applications are invited for the position of Research Associate in Condensed Matter Theory and Modelling of Quantum 2D Materials This is an opportunity for talented researchers in condensed matter theory to study physical properties (electronic band structure, electronic transport, optical and thermoelectric) of two-dimensional materials, their heterostructures, and devices based on such materials. We seek theorists with experience (proven by publications record) in physics of two-dimensional materials, quantum transport studies, or in strongly correlated quantum systems. Skills in field-theory methods in condensed matter theory or ab initio modelling using density functional theory will be equally welcome.

We are looking for two Research Fellows to join our interdisciplinary team, where you will be supported to combine your individual talents and breadth of skills to develop innovative approaches for biomanufacturing. You will be based in the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB) which is a cross-disciplinary research centre and part of the University of Manchester (UoM).

This role provides an opportunity to a highly motivated researcher interested in sustainability in operations and supply chain management to contribute to the development of a sustainability framework that will be incorporated into an AI based sustainability scorecard for Quick Service Restaurants (QSRs).​​​​​​​ The project is in collaboration with our SME partner Orderly, who have an inventory management platform and customer base of major quick service restaurants developed to reduce inventory wastage, prevent stockouts and increase profitability. Orderly is currently developing an AI powered sustainability scorecard that provides actionable insights to managers in each store to improve their sustainability performance while also calculating a sustainability score based on their inventory waste.

The project seeks to advance our understanding of how place-based ‘innovation districts’ generate new forms of impact and relationships in city-regions. Specifically, it aims to address the following questions: How do we understand, measure success and coordinate efforts in university-related innovation districts? What roles might universities play in the governance of innovation districts?

You will play a leading role within a work package linked to a broader programme of research. Firstly, you will be responsible for the development of bespoke test systems for Membrane Electrode Assemblies. This will involve the commissioning of hydrogen both PEM and HT-PEM, fuel cell systems. Secondly, you will be actively involved in research into the application of these membranes for enhanced fuel cell operations which will require the ability to construct novel Membrane Electrode Assemblies and optimization of their performance. You will be based in the Department of Chemical Engineering and will assist in the supervision of postgraduate and undergraduate projects in cognate areas. You will collaborate closely with researchers in other Departments in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and will liaise with partner companies and Universities. Motivated candidates will also get opportunity to work with other ongoing research activities in the group.

You will work on two projects, with the general theme of decision making and human-centered design in medicines management.  These projects are funded by Health Education England and the National Institute of Health Research.  You will have a research doctorate or equivalent level of research experience in ergonomics/human factors or a related discipline; ideally, you will also have an understanding of work in healthcare settings.  You should be able to interact effectively with other researchers and with healthcare professionals.  Specific knowledge of human-technology interaction would be advantageous, as would experience of producing practice-focused and academic outputs from research.

A Research Associate in Applied Mathematics is sought who will contribute to a project applying mathematical and computational techniques to understand the role of mechanical forces in the regulation in biological tissues.  The project is a collaboration between researchers in the Faculty of Science & Engineering and the Faculty of Biology, Medicine & Health.  The post-holder will be based primarily in the Department of Mathematics but will interact extensively with team members from other disciplines. 

We have an opportunity to appoint a talented and ambitious investigator to join the Research Group of Prof Andrew Morris, to work on an exciting project funded by the Medical Research Council entitled: “Novel statistical methods for transcriptomic imputation into genome-wide association studies to enhance understanding of causal mechanisms underlying common human diseases”. ​​​​​​​The project, which is co-led by Prof Magnus Rattray and Prof Steve Eyre, will develop and apply state-of-the-art statistical methods and software to integrate genetic and transcriptomic data resources to provide a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms and biological pathways through which genetic variation impacts on common human diseases, including inflammatory arthritis, which will offer exciting future routes to clinical translation through the development of novel therapeutics.

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented post-doctoral scientist to join our team working full-time on a 4-year project funded by Versus Arthritis investigating circadian changes in the joint and gut in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A defining feature of RA is the daily rhythmicity in joint pain and stiffness, and our previous work recognises that the inflammatory environment within the joint exhibits 24h variation (Hand LE et al 2020 Nature Communications).  We now wish to explore mechanisms driving this.  Furthermore, RA is associated with compositional changes in the gut microbiota.  This project explores  links between the circadian clock, immunity and the microbiome.

The project is a collaboration with the synthetic organic chemistry team of Prof David J. Procter in the Department of Chemistry. An outstanding and ambitious computational chemist is required. You should be capable of working under your own initiative and within a research team, so excellent communication and organisational skills are also required. You should have, or be working towards, a PhD (or equivalent) in molecular computational chemistry.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to join the Clinical Informatics Hub part of Cancer Research UK RadNet Manchester and aligned to the wider Radiotherapy Related Research (RRR) group. This group is based in the Division of Cancer Sciences at The University of Manchester and physically located in The Christie NHS Foundation You will be working as part of a highly multidisciplinary team to develop and maintain a software toolkit for the analysis of clinical and radiotherapy data. The group is particularly interested in image analysis and image processing with expertise in image-based datamining and imaging biomarkers related to radiotherapy toxicities. Therefore the applicant should have a keen interest in the research and development of software packages to support and correlate imaging data with outcomes, specifically required for the improvement of survival and reduction in toxicities following cancer treatment. The post holder will also develop advanced infrastructure to support the group and play an important role in systems administration.

The Simons Observatory:UK (SO:UK) collaboration seeks five Post-Doctoral Research Associates (PDRAs) to work on the Simons Observatory (SO). SO is a next-generation Cosmic Microwave Background observatory currently under construction in the Atacama Desert in Chile and due to begin early science operations in early 2023. The positions will be based at The University of Manchester (two positions), The University of Cambridge (one position), The University of Oxford (one position) and Imperial College London (one position). The successful candidates will work with the local SO:UK Investigators at each institute on the development of the SO data processing pipeline and on the preparation and delivery of the Science Ready Data Products (SRDPs) for SO.

We are looking for an experimental Postdoctoral Researcher to join the synthetic biology research group of Professor Patrick Cai in the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology and work closely with the Synthetic Genomics team at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute as well as with research groups at MRC LMB Cambridge and Imperial College London. The research associates will get to work on this high-profile, ground-breaking project and make use state of the art techniques and technologies (e.g. chromosome synthesis, directed evolution, nanopore sequencing) in a collaborative working environment within and across institutions. The ideal candidates will be experienced with synthetic biology, yeast cell biology and genome engineering. Being familiar with yeast genetics, chromosomal biology and DNA assembly technologies (e.g., Golden Gate Assembly) would be advantageous.

A 2 years postdoctoral position is open in the Advanced Processor Group at the University of Manchester in the UK, in the domain of systems software security. A particular focus of the position is low-level kernel development and software compartmentalization. You will join the FlexOS project [1, 2], that investigates the development of flexible isolation and hardening features within operating systems and applications. The postdoc will explore porting FlexOS to a hardware capability CPU prototype, ARM Morello [3, 4].

We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to simulate the genomic variation within a population and model its underlying causes. The candidate will have a PhD in Applied Mathematics, and have a strong background in data simulation and analysis. The role will involve simulating human variation data, and modelling dependencies using Markov Random Fields. In addition to data simulation and quantitative analysis, the PDRA will be responsible for writing up and disseminate the findings in conjunction with the supervisors and collaborators.

The project’s aim is to explore the use of co-production methods to devise initiatives that improve the experience of ageing in place in social housing. The successful candidate will conduct fieldwork in three case studies in Greater Manchester. Each case study will centre on a project, led by a housing association officer and a group of older co-researchers, and delivered through co-design workshops. The successful candidate (the RA) will help to train co-researchers and will run workshops, in addition to helping to maintain the relationship between the academic and non-academic partners. The RA will document the development of each initiative through methods including but not limited to digital visual and audio recordings, observations and fieldnotes. The RA will also be responsible for systematic transcription of recordings and the analysis of data through suitable techniques, manual and software based. The RA is expected to contribute to the dissemination of findings through co-authored publications and conference presentations, and to knowledge transfer activities. Candidates should note that some participants will be older people which requires sensitivity and the observance of a strict ethical protocol.
