(17) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Micropaleontology

Recently discovered contourite-like drifts of sediment in seismic reflection records of the lower Plio-Pleistocene in the Red Sea (Mitchell et al., 2019) suggest the exciting possibility that deep-waters were much more mobile than they are at present.  That water movement may have been due to more vigorous exchange with the Indian Ocean and/or to wind-driven currents reaching the seabed, at a time when the basin was shallower.  If the former, the Red Sea would have supplied the Indian Ocean with more water densified by evaporation.  A vigorous exchange may even have implications for dispersions of mammals from Africa, including early Hominids, as it would disfavour the southern route through the Bab el Mandeb Strait.
