PhD position summary/title: Three PhD fellowships in Machine Learning
At least three open positions are being advertised in this call. Each position is detailed below
- Trustworthy Machine Learning– The student will work on a combination of topics in robustness, privacy (specifically Differential Privacy), and unlearning within Machine Learning. The project can focus either on a theoretical perspective on learning theory or on applying these concepts to modern machine learning practices. Applicants must have strong skills in mathematics, especially in probability, statistics, and linear algebra. A solid background in machine learning and experience with programming in a machine learning context are also required. While knowledge of learning theory, optimization theory, strong coding experience, experiments with large machine learning models, and previous publications in the field will be viewed favorably, they are not mandatory. Prospective applicants are encouraged to visit this link for more information.
The project will be supervised by Amartya Sanyal and Yevgeny Seldin. For any inquiries, please contact Amartya Sanyal at [email protected].
- Robust Online Learning – The project will explore the impact and mitigation of adversarial threats in online learning, specifically in distributed (a.k.a. federated) settings. Growing interest in public-domain utilization of federated learning, such as in healthcare and media recommendation, has led to significant developments in protecting models against adversarial manipulation in the training phase. Prior work, however, largely focuses on supervised learning and ignores the paradigm of online learning. The latter is becoming more relevant in this age of language models, where we seek to adapt models on the fly, using real-time information. To prevent these language models from getting manipulated by poisonous or erroneous information (a.k.a. misinformation), it is of critical importance to develop robust online learning algorithms. To learn more on the need and challenges of robust machine learning (ML), check out the introductory content of this book.
Candidates interested in this project are expected to have a strong background in ML and optimization. Knowledge of distributed algorithms and stochastic processes is a plus. Project will be supervised by Nirupam Gupta and Yevgeny Seldin. Contact person: Nirupam Gupta ([email protected]).
- Sustainable Machine Learning – In this project, we will broadly investigate resource-efficient machine learning (ML) methods and their effect on the sustainability of ML. This can be at the level of developing novel algorithms, learning paradigms, or hardware optimization techniques that can result in reductions in the resources required when developing and deploying ML pipelines. The interplay of resource efficiency with the broader sustainability of ML (in terms of safety, fairness, and access) will be of particular interest. For more details about the project visit the project page here.
Candidates applying for this position must have strong skills in mathematics and ML, with a drive towards advancing the UN sustainable development goals.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarships as part of the research project, “Behavioral Barriers to the Green Transition”, CEBI, University of Copenhagen (UCPH)
The Department of Economics and CEBI is pleased to announce openings for up to two fully-funded PhD scholarships as part of the research project “Behavioral Barriers to the Green Transition”.
With global energy demand projected to increase by 47% by 2050, improving energy efficiency is crucial for transitioning to a low carbon economy. While technological progress is a precondition, ultimately, the “human factor” determines energy consumption. Traditional technical and economic frameworks fail to account for why individuals are not adopting seemingly cost-effective energy-saving technologies or reacting to existing energy policy. Understanding what drives this gap is essential for effective policy targeting and achieving urgent energy savings. Are people paying attention to electricity prices and if yes, do they change their habits? Are the current energy policies we have effective and fair? What behavioral or cognitive barriers are there when it comes to changing energy consumption behavior or adopting energy-efficient technology?

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship as part of the research project “The Role of Preferences and Beliefs in Shaping Physician Careers”, CEBI, University of Copenhagen (UCPH)
The Department of Economics and CEBI is pleased to announce openings of a fully-funded PhD scholarship as part of the research project “The Role of Preferences and Beliefs in Shaping Physician Careers”. This project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.
You will be involved in research centered at the high-skilled labor market for physicians. Health care sectors across the world are challenged by physician shortages to match increasing demands for care. Failure to recruit and retain a diverse group of physicians in health care can be catastrophic for public health and individual patients. It can further increase inequality in access to health care, extend waiting lists unnecessarily, and keep talents of different genders and backgrounds from pursuing a medical research career within the profession. Our hypothesis is that individual physicians’ preferences, circumstances, and beliefs determine career aspirations, their realized career and family outcomes. We ask two overarching questions: 1) How are physician beliefs about career and family trade-offs shaped over the life-cycle? 2) How do preferences, circumstances and beliefs impact aspirations and realized outcomes? Using survey experiments linked at the individual level to data from administrative sources, including a randomized lottery that determines physicians’ first jobs, we will disentangle how different mechanisms causally shape physician preferences, beliefs and careers.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship at the Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen (UCPH)
The project PROMACS, ‘Promoting Climate Change Adaptation in a Context of Multiple Crises in Burkina Faso. The Role of Civil Servants’ studies the intersections between the climatic crisis, the escalating security crisis and the (chronic) health crisis in Burkina Faso. More specifically we examine ethnographically how civil servants in three key ministries work to ‘keep the wheels running’ and how they understand their own roles in policy promotion and implementation in the current context of multiple crises. An important outcome of this project is the provision of in-depth understanding of how civil servants working in the ‘core of the state’ understand the challenges and potentialities for the enhancement of sustainable development in Burkina Faso and how focus and coordination of CCA initiatives can be strengthened in a context of multiple crises. The project takes an ethnographic approach exploring the professional as well as the personal narratives of a number of civil servants. In addition, the project examines the social life of key documents (particularly the National Action Plan for Climate Change Adaptation) in order to examine the stakes and the balance of power surrounding these documents. The overall design of the project takes the current fragile security situation in Burkina Faso into account through a combination of short-term institutional fieldwork with extensive use of digital research methods. The PhD project will work thematically across the three key ministries with a strong focus on the intersection between the climatic crisis and health.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Project in understanding the life-cycle of dust
Cosmic dust is critical to the evolution of the universe; it catalyses the formation of stars, planets, and molecules, and, by absorbing half of all emitted light, fundamentally alters the appearance of galaxies. But where this dust comes from is still unknown. In this project we will use a combination of models, theory and observations to explore how elements heavier than Helium are efficiently sequestered in cosmic dust grains, and study their dynamics and evolution in star forming regions.
We are looking for candidates with an interest in star formation, the interstellar medium, the chemical evolution of galaxies, and/or computational astrophysics. The PhD student will be encouraged and supported to develop and take ownership of their project. They will receive support to travel to international conferences, build a network, and visit collaborators.

PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Improved oral health among middle-aged and older adults
The project is a collaboration between the Department of Odontology and the Department of Public Health at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
Older people in vulnerable situations in Denmark experience severe dental problems. At the same time, dental health is one of the health areas where the greatest inequality in the population is seen.
Unfortunately, there is a lack of knowledge about the causes of the poor oral conditions in the elderly and what consequences this has for them and the society. The project will utilize the Copenhagen Aging and Midlife Biobank (CAMB) (www.camb.ku.dk), which contains data on a cohort from midlife onwards, and national registers, to provide this knowledge. This will provide a solid basis for introducing the most relevant and effective efforts, including dental care services for older people in the future.
The project is based on pre-generated data on a large population and is thus epidemiological in nature. This means that the first part of the project offers collection, cleansing, control, and analysis of data. The project is therefore relatively statistically demanding. Subsequently, the results must be reported to international journals and in a PhD thesis, which results in a major writing task in the project.

PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Microglassification of proteins at Department of Pharmacy
Protein drugs have allowed for a safer and more effective treatment of various severe diseases, such as diabetes and cancer. However, proteins generally need to be administered by injection, and due to their instability in solution are often prepared in a dried formulation that requires rehydration before administration. In this project we plan to investigate a novel method, termed microglassification, to prepare dried protein particles with desired properties. Using microfluidics, the various factors that govern particle characteristics like size and protein structural integrity will be investigated in detail, allowing a rational design of these particles for specific purposes. For example, these protein particles may be used in injectable suspensions, for pulmonary delivery, or in solid dosage formulations for oral delivery. The impact of various excipients on particle properties will be investigated, with a special focus on protein structural integrity. In vitro properties of these particles can then be studied, with a possible follow-up of in vivo studies to determine their performance in a real-life setting.

PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Aging Interventions at the Departments of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
The proportion of older individuals is growing, and it is therefore important to investigate ways to promote healthy aging. Exercise is one of the most studied interventions and is known to have a variety of health benefits. Dietary interventions have also shown encouraging results, with intermittent fasting being a promising anti-aging intervention. A potential side effect of fasting may be loss of muscle and bone-mass which may be countered by exercise. Further, the effect of exercise on human aging is incompletely understood. In this PhD fellowship you will work jointly with the Department of Biomedical Sciences and the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine to test if fasting, exercise or fasting in combination with exercise may impact the aging process in a randomized clinical trial.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarship at the Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen (UCPH): The Anatomy of Empire (ANATEM)
We hereby invite applications for a PhD scholarship at the Department of Political Science. The successful candidate will work on the project ‘The Anatomy of Empire”, funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark, alongside professor Jacob Gerner Hariri (PI) and co-investigators, associate professor Asger Mose Wingender (Department of Economics, UCPH) and professor Gary Cox (Stanford University). The successful candidate will be enrolled at the Faculty of Social Sciences under the Copenhagen Graduate School of Social Sciences.
In most of recorded history, empire has been the dominant form of political organization. Even so, there are no systematic empirical analyses of how being subject to imperial rule has affected countries’ political development or, indeed, of what actually constitutes “empire”. These fundamental questions are part of what ANATEM will seek to address. This is relevant today because many so-called ‘failed states’ were, until recently, under imperial rule. It is also relevant because many scholars find that great powers today are beginning to behave like empires again. The chosen candidate will work with the other team members to finalize and analyze a novel database of cities, which were the political, economic, and administrative nodes of states and empires.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Extended Reality for Behaviour Change
Extended reality (XR) technologies, including Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR), enable us to display digital information in our physical surroundings, tailored to individual perspectives, environments, and preferences. This integration of digital content into our surroundings, either by creating virtual worlds (VR) or overlaying the physical world with digital content (AR), has the potential to significantly shape our future interactions with computers and influence our behaviours.
This PhD project will explore the potential of XR for behaviour change. On the one hand, Virtual Reality can help us train responses to various situations (e.g., exposure therapy), and even allows us to experience the consequences of our actions that are otherwise difficult to anticipate. On the other hand, Augmented Reality (AR) integrates information into our daily lives, making them practical for everyday use. This PhD project aims to better understand what makes those examples work by focusing on two research objectives:
- Understand the underlying factors that drive behaviour change in XR, focusing on fundamental XR properties like embodiment and presence.
- Develop a framework for interventions that integrate behaviour change techniques into everyday life using XR technology, supporting sustained change
The PhD student will have much freedom to shape the focus of their work and the research questions they are interested in. The project will use methods from human-computer interaction, including implementing and empirically evaluating XR prototypes with quantitative and qualitative methods. The project requires knowledge and interest in human-computer interaction and extended reality.

PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Sediment DNA at the Department of Forensic Medicine
Research on human DNA recovered from sediments is a rapidly developing field. This area has implications for both forensic and ancient DNA research, where recovered DNA could be used for human identifications or to understand past environments and people. However, there is still a lack of understanding of how DNA is preserved in sediments, how to maximize its recovery, and how to adapt computational methods to this metagenomic data. This project will utilize bronze age sediments from England in order to study DNA preservation and recovery from different geological conditions. Methodological findings from this study will then be applied to sediments from various bronze age sites to study human population dynamics and agricultural practices. In addition, there will be the opportunity to apply these methods to human identification scenarios. This project will be performed at the Section of Forensic Genetics, Department of Forensic Medicine and will include collaborations with the Section for GeoGenetics, The Globe Institute.

About The University of Copenhagen, Denmark – Official Website
The University of Copenhagen is a public research university in Copenhagen, Denmark. Founded in 1479, the University of Copenhagen is the second-oldest university in Scandinavia, and ranks as one of the top universities in the Nordic countries and Europe.
Its establishment sanctioned by Pope Sixtus IV, the University of Copenhagen was founded by Christian I of Denmark as a Catholic teaching institution with a predominantly theological focus. In 1537, it was re-established by King Christian III as part of the Lutheran Reformation. Up until the 18th century, the university was primarily concerned with educating clergymen. Through various reforms in the 18th and 19th century, the University of Copenhagen was transformed into a modern, secular university, with science and the humanities replacing theology as the main subjects studied and taught.
The University of Copenhagen consists of six different faculties, with teaching taking place in its four distinct campuses, all situated in Copenhagen. The university operates 36 different departments and 122 separate research centres in Copenhagen, as well as a number of museums and botanical gardens in and outside the Danish capital. The University of Copenhagen also owns and operates multiple research stations around Denmark, with two additional ones located in Greenland. Additionally, The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and the public hospitals of the Capital and Zealand Region of Denmark constitute the conglomerate Copenhagen University Hospital.
A number of prominent scientific theories and schools of thought are namesakes of the University of Copenhagen. The famous Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum mechanics was conceived at the Niels Bohr Institute, which is part of the university. The Department of Political Science birthed the Copenhagen School of Security Studies, which is also named after the university. Others include the Copenhagen School of Theology and the Copenhagen School of Linguistics.
