PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Integrated resilient products & value chains for a sustainable future
We have a vacancy for a PhD Candidate at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. While Industry 4.0 is primarily a techno-economic vision, indicating how more general technological advancements are brought to bear on industrial value chains and how they will change industry’s economic position, EU commission recently introduced the Industry 5.0 concept as a way of framing how European industry and emerging societal trends and needs will co-exist. Industry 5.0 recognizes the power of industry to achieve societal goals beyond jobs and growth to become a resilient provider of prosperity, by making production respect the boundaries of our planet and placing the wellbeing of the industry worker at the center of the production process. There is a consensus on the need to better integrate social and environmental European priorities into technological innovation and to shift the focus from individual technologies to a systemic approach.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Tactical Urbanism
The central aim with this PhD research is to investigate the broader effects of ad hoc, temporary, low-cost public space inventions, also discussed as tactical urbanism. Central questions for this research will be if and how public administrations can apply tactical urbanism approaches to support a fast and effective transformation of car oriented urban environments towards public spaces that support walking, cycling and access to public transport. Of central concern in this research is to investigate potential tactical urbanism principles in established planning procedures at city administrations. Can tactical urbanism principles support a transformative shift in established planning procedures to transform car oriented urban environments? Of further interest are possibilities for more inclusive urban planning and transformations through tactical urbanism as well as potentials to trigger public debates. Has tactical urbanism the potential to support the attitudes of local urban societies towards an acceptance of streets and public spaces that are supportive to sustainable mobility and social inclusion?

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Point Cloud Prediction
In this PhD project, we propose to focus on point cloud (PC) data prediction which is an important processing step that complements and benefits other immersive media production and consumption steps. More specifically, PC prediction is closely connected to volumetric video compression and thus will have a strong impact on the quality of user experience. The PhD project objectives are to develop various Neural Network-based point cloud prediction models and validate them in the context of VV coding and rendering. Similar to conventional video compression algorithms based on motion estimation/compensation steps, it is expected that efficient point cloud prediction will improve the coding performance of volumetric data. Moreover, the prediction of point clouds can provide a better understanding of the future user pose and ensure low-latency VV streaming. In this respect, for an input sequence with n frames of point clouds, the objective consists in predicting one (or multiple) future frame(s) given some reference frames.
