(23) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate position – Er Lab

An NCI-funded Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Ekrem Emrah Er at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Er is an assistant professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, a full member of the University of Illinois Cancer Center and the co-leader of the tumor microenvironment working group. We have a strong focus on the emerging concept of mechanochemical signal transduction (mechanotransduction) as a metastatic trait. This work builds on the principal finding that disseminated cancer cells utilize the vascular endothelium in vital secondary organs as a solid substrate to receive mechano-chemical signals, and in turn activate transcription factors such as YAP and MRTF (Er et al., 2018, Nature Cell Biology). However, activation of MRTF leads to increased cancer cell cortical stiffness, which makes cancer cells vulnerable to attack by cytotoxic T-cells and natural killer cells through a novel mode of immune surveillance called mechanosurveillance (Tello-Lafoz et al., 2021, Immunity). Current projects in the lab address the following questions:
