PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Sub-millimetre observations of clouds

Your research area will be to retrieve ice cloud properties from radiances measured by ICI and AWS. We have already developed algorithms for this purpose, for example, the one to be run operationally for ICI. We are also planning for in-house retrievals using machine learning to generate data suitable for the verification of climate models. Before the launch, your task will be to improve and produce the “retrieval databases” needed for these algorithms and perform end-to-end simulations of the retrievals for complete testing of the algorithms. After the launch of the sensors, you will have a crucial role in the initial analysis and application of the data.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Material development for Novel Combustion Technology

We are now looking for a talented and motivated PhD student that can contribute to this research effort. You will be working in a creative and experienced research group that is world leading in its field and has excellent track record with respect to publication (>300 publications) and education of PhD students (>20 examined). Specifically the project is related to development of materials for chemical-looping, and to enhance the performance of oxygen carrier particles, the cornerstone of the concept. This fuel conversion process could be a break-through technology with respect to achieving climate targets. The idea here is to investigate a new class of materials, “high-entropy oxides” for use as oxygen carriers. We will have a highly interdisciplinary approach for the project, including experimental synthesis, characterization and testing, but also computational material modelling included as a research tool. The student will have the opportunity to conduct research and collaborate with researchers at the Div. of Energy Technology, Physics, and Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Chalmers, something we believe will be very fruitful for development as a researcher.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Supply Chain Management

The project aims at investigating what individual firms can do to reduce the carbon emissions resulting from the upstream transport activities embedded in their supply chains by (at least) half. Previous studies show how firms’ purchasing functions impact on transport both directly – through their purchases of transport services – and indirectly, through what they buy, how they buy various products, and from what suppliers. Apart from firm internal factors affecting transport, a range of external factors also set the terms, such as the suppliers’ locations, the transport infrastructure, the transport providers’ offerings as well as their other customers’ demands. The possibilities to reduce the transport emissions upstream are also influenced by the fact that transport is often included in the product offering which means that the transport activities are not visible for, or known by, the buying company. This limited ‘horizon’ entails difficulties for buying companies to be aware of how their purchasing behaviour impacts the transport activities embedded in their supply chains, and what they can do to reduce the climate impact resulting from these transport activities.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in collaboration in major infrastructure construction projects

This Ph.D. student project is part of an externally funded research project on inter-organisational collaboration in complex infrastructure and/or civil engineering projects in the AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) industry. Public infrastructure clients in Sweden are working more towards partnering and collaborative delivery models for complex infrastructure and/or civil engineering projects, for example early contractor involvement contracts. These new collaboration forms have impact on responsibilities, new roles, project management and project structure and on the development of new practices and the usage of digital technologies. For the proejct, the focus will be on studying collaboration between public clients, civil engineering consultants and contractors in relation to new ways of working, innovation, as well as digital practices and relevant competence for digital work in complex and major infrastructure and/or civil engineering projects. The PhD project will study a number of complex collaborative construction projects in Sweden through interviews, observations and document analysis in order to eventually suggest solutions to improve collaboration for major infrastructure and/or civil engineering projects.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in photonics: Microcombs for coherent optical communications

This project will investigate an emerging technology called microresonator frequency comb (or microcomb). A microcomb has the astonishing property of generating hundreds of optical frequencies in a microphotonic chip when illuminated with a single-frequency laser and is a strong contender for wavelength division multiplexing. This project envisions entering a new era in optical communications, where the phase coherence of microcombs is fully capitalized. From a fundamental view, this project addresses the overarching research question of whether microcomb technology can reach a level of stability similar to standard, high-performance but bulky, frequency combs. Currently, there is a large gap in knowledge as to what are the ultimate levels in phase coherence that can be attained with microcombs and whether these limits can be attained with integrated photonics technology. The project is partly financed by the Knut and Wallenberg foundation and the Swedish Research Council.

To meet these challenges the FoRmulaEx consortium – an industrial research centre (IRC) for functional nucleic acid delivery – which the Wilhelmsson group is part of, has been initiated. The Wilhelmsson group among other things focusses on the development of fluorescence-based methodologies to help understanding nucleic acid-based delivery and collaborates closely to AstraZeneca. This is a unique opportunity to work in a scientific area of great importance in a novel setting with industry and excellent academic groups from various disciplines working hand in hand.

About Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden   –Official Website

Chalmers University of Technology  is a Swedish university located in Gothenburg that focuses on research and education in technology, natural sciences, architecture, mathematics, maritime and other management areas.
The university was founded in 1829 following a donation by William Chalmers, a director of the Swedish East India Company. He donated part of his fortune for the establishment of an “industrial school”. Chalmers was run as a private institution until 1937, when the institute became a state-owned university. In 1994, the school was incorporated as an aktiebolag under the control of the Swedish Government, the faculty and the Student Union. Chalmers is one of only three universities in Sweden which are named after a person, the other two being Karolinska Institutet and Linnaeus University.
